TI-Nspire OS 2.1 out in two weeks???
« on: July 04, 2010, 09:45:39 pm »
I am sorry if this has already been reported, but today I was reading some posts on the nspire google group and I came across this:

http://groups.google.com/group/tinspire/browse_thread/thread/2346702796bbcf6e?hl=en

TI's website confirms these facts:

http://education.ti.com/educationportal/sites/US/homePage/nspire-software-os.html

Apparently, they are only adding three things, which are described on TI's page.  I hope they don't add any other things that block us from downgrading or running assembly programs.

EDIT--I included the wrong link in the original post.  Thanks DJ Omnimaga for pointing this out. :)

Mhmm both links are exactly the same, but here is a link to the info about 2.1 on TI site:

http://education.ti.com/educationportal/sites/US/homePage/nspire-software-os.html

According to the website, there doesn't seems to be much new stuff, though. It doesn't mention anything new regarding programmability

I hope this OS won't prevent you from downgrading to lower OSes.

They really have nothing else to do...

More like they have better things to do, they'd just rather not invest the necessary time/resources implementing them. Silly TI...

I sent and e-mail to TI asking if we would be able to downgrade our OS after upgrading.  I don't think the person who answered knew exactly what I was talking about since the referred to OS Version 2.0.1.60, but the response dosen't make me feel too good:

Quote
Thank you for contacting Texas Instruments.

This is a very good question you have about the TI-Nspire family handheld. The
latest version of the TI-Nspire family handheld operating system is OS 2.0.1.60.
And yes, if you upgrade to this version of the OS, you will not be able to
downgrade to a previous version.

Another resource you can use to find answers to your questions, example
calculations and other information is our Knowledge Base. The Knowledge Base is
accessible to you 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

http://support.education.ti.com

I hope that you find this information helpful. If you have further questions or
comments, please feel free to send me an email.

Warmest Regards,

Doug Fincher
I was under the impression that we could downgrade with OS 2.0.1.60, but I never actually upgraded to it, so I could be wrong.  I really hope TI dosen't block downgrading as this could block all new Nspire users from using Ndless until (if) Ndless 2 is released. :(

Mhmm I hope he wasn't sure what he is talking about. It would suck if 2.1 prevented downgrades x.x

Since it's possible to wipe out the OS from the diagnostics menu, I can't see how an effective downgrade prevention could be put in the OS itself :)
However, they could put such a highly unwanted (from users' POV, of course, but they don't care about us) protection in an update to the boot2. So far, it's been possible to screw with the .tno / .tnc files so as to remove the boot2 update from them... but perhaps they'll prevent the usage of modified .tno / .tnc files with future OS and boot2 versions...

Yeah that's one of my worry. I wonder if older versions of the Nspire computer link software will allow transfering stuff with OS 2.1 on the calc? Maybe they'll modify the OS in a way it can't x.x

Even if we can't upgrade our OS any more because of these reasons (prevent downgrade, new computer link needed) I really don't think I will never need to upgrade from 2.0.  The only thing that TI really can add at this point is 3d graphs (which would probably only be for the CAS) and more programming features (the only thing I could think of is dialog boxes, they would never add any features needed to make a graphical game).  Unless they add something really big, I really can't see my self upgrading.

Luckily TI can't force updates. :P

We can always remove the boot2 upgrade from the package as well, assuming they included one.

Getkey. The 82 through 92+ and v200 got a getkey function and I believe the 73 and 76 do, too. I have no idea why they never added such function on Nspire models. It's clear they wanted to prevent game dev

I really see no reason to upgrade to 2.1, either. I'm happily using 1.1, which has all the math features I'll ever need. The power bug is rather annoying, though.
We can probably write our own 3D grapher in C. I've been thinking about writing one myself, but it seems rather futile at this point since we don't have any way to input the function being graphed.

If I was to upgrade, I would prefer 1.7 or 2.0. 2.0.1 for the OS 2.54 MP features on home screen, which I kinda enjoy (the ability to go back up and copy/paste stuff such as previous answers, altough it gets annoying when you typed a long line and want to move the char at the beginning, because it is no longer possible), so I don't need to deal with the screen issues
