Ticalc.org splits 83+ BASIC directories even more!
« on: December 16, 2008, 12:02:42 am »
Finally, all the unsorted games at ticalc.org 83+ section were finally sorted! But this is nothing, I just discovered that they even created even more sub-categories per genres. Despite maybe a few things, I like the new directory layout. If you go into PUzzle, there's a sub-category just for guessing games, in RPGs there's a category just for battle arenas games (where the simple goal of the game is to fight enemies and level up, no story/dungeons to explore), but even better, text RPGs finally have their own categories. I've been waiting for this for a long time. Not necessarly to easily grab all the good ones to add to Omnimaga RPGs section, but it will be much easier to find out good stuff there that we might have missed a few years ago. Same for other categories. Also easier to load too

Also, it is quite shocking to browse sometimes and look at the lack of originality over the years. To come to the point where they had to create a directory just for pong games, snake games, Poker, etc, it is something x.x.

At least maybe it will discourage the authors who actually browse the archives from uploading their games if they have been made 90 times before or improve them?

I have seen that in the past few updates (recent), I wonder if they will be doing a POTY for this year and if they will announce their new hire?

For me that means a lot coming from you.

Actually, what I am thinking is that:

1) POTY voting will occurs very late in December, maybe even January, and like last year, results will be posted a bit late in January. There is only one category for 2008 POTY 68k. That might let chance for some z80 or PC entries to enter at last minute in the process (altough this will delay results posting).

or

2) 2008 POTY will be skipped and Ultima V and Egypt will be added to the 2009 poll. I doubt the POTY will be cancelled for a ticalc.org dying reason, like we feared last year, since the site seems to be managed regulary again now)

As for hire, for some reasons I believe they still haven't made a decision yet, because I saw some errors in the recently uploaded files sometimes, meaning the archiver may still be learning the system or they are still trying some more. I also hope when they finish sorting files that they will announce the directory separation so that people notice. I was gonna comment about this on Ticalc.org earlier altough it would have been a bit off-topic, but when it came time to post I accidentally clicked the Clear button instead of Post and I didn't felt like retyping everything from scratch again

Well actually there's a category under RPGs just for Pokémon games altough it includes all text/arena Pokémon games. It will most likely go there

Wow, there are more conversion programs (140) than quadratic formula programs (118) :o, I'm suprised they don't have a "password" program section.  The search function says there are 446 of those.

true, there should be a section for these too IMHO :P

as for unit conversion programs I wouldn't be surprised if there were any for the TI-73 too (even thought this calc has built in unit conversion functions)

EDIT: Surpringsly there is only one, and it has more features than in the conversion menu.

It's nice that someone finally took the time to do this as it was much overdue. Maybe they'll starting going through and re-organizing some of their other archives (I wouldn't hold my breath though <_<). As for the POTY, hopefully they'll post it soon. They were pretty late posting it last year too.

whoa, a pokemon category o_0

a lot of half-baked products, including my own apparently.

now all i need is a review. a review IS the best way to get imput on a project. but nobody wants to write one ;_;

Yeah I hate how people won't write reviews for stuff, i find this more relevant than the rating system, since a lot of people rate down files just for fun and reviews are good for files with no screenshots so people have a lil idea of what they will be downloading.

I think the reason why the POTY was posted so late is because there is only one poll this year though. Normally there's 5 polls: 1 for the TI-83+/84+, 3 for 68k (they split entries in two categories then entries with the most votes joins a third poll) and 1 for PC

i guess we really cannot talk, as i doubt any of us has written many relevant reviews.

all right then, i will review at least 5 new submissions today. maybe people will follow my example.

Well I wrote 30 at least, some didn't got through but most did (they were old Omnimaga reviews from 2004 reposted on ticalc after Omnimaga closing, though) and one day I went through crappy BASIC games on ticalc 83 section and reviewed some games with what could be improved and all
