What would you do?
« on: December 14, 2010, 10:38:45 am »
What would you do if someone walked up to you and asked you how to program a calc? Would you point them to some tutorials? Would you take it upon yourself to teach them? A most inquistive person (i.e., me) would like to know.

I would show him TI|BD, and then give him my email address for further conversation.

EDIT: 800th post!

Congrats on the 800th post, graphmastur.

Very interesting, how drastically different your answers are.

Since I have a lot of my plate and am not really experienced in many things or haven't coded in ages, I would generally redirect him to some tutorials and maybe show him the basics, then point him on the forums for further research as well as the TI manual online, and to practice a bit with each commands. If he needs further help I would probably ask him to post on the forums.

I'm personally not a fan of scaring away new programmers who never posted on forums before and snap at them by telling them to RTFM and do everything themselves, like I saw elsewhere a few years ago. I'll point them to the right direction, while still not trying to do everything for them, and if I notice they do not do any effort, I'll tell them they need to practice some things on their own as well to get better. If they still try to get everyone to do everything for them, then I guess it's time to dig up LMGTFY. :P

1. Talk to them a bit and see how much interest they really have. Proceed from here. :D
2. Get more information and see what calculator they have, what kind of programs he/she was interested in writing and if they have any prior programming experience.
3. Point them to proper tutorial based on language. If it's BASIC, offer to help if they have questions. Point them towards active communities and TIcalc.

Actually, being a visual person, if such thing was asked to me IRL, I would probably be tempted to show the person some commands, like doing a For( loop that counts from 0 to 999 with Disp A and a few other stuff prior directing him to tutorials, to make him more interested. However, for very complicated things I might not be good at explaining. X.x
