Why do you program for calcs?

I'd like to hear what you guys think.

As for me, I think that the idea of handheld devices that can be programmed and exploited like (primitive) computers and the large community behind it are the key words. :)smile.gif

I program because if I didn't I would go crazy. There is nothing to do in my little town...

I completely agree! Programming gives you the power to manipulate your own universe based on your own taste!

Well I always wanted to create video games ever since I am young, but I never had a compy until april 2004 (my family was too poor), but when I got my calc I got amazed by the fact you could type games on the calc. Even though they were slow it was cool to mess around and with all the progress I made I can try to make games with cool graphics that look like some gameboy games, except monochrome

I am also a very creative guy, thats why I made 23 RPGs in less than 3 years :woot:woot.gif

Me? Well... I program to try and defy all the "all-mighty" ASM programmers... I feel that if I can make BASIC games that can compete with ASM ones then I'll have served my purpose... Plus, I have ideas that can be easily expressed on the calculator (83+), and, I want to out-do Kevin  :paf:tripaf.gif

Hey, that's my goal too! Well, I originally started programming because I had always wanted to make video games, but had never gotten around to learning any computer languages. Now I program because I really do want to outdo Kevin  :alien:alien2.gif and show what can be done with BASIC (which, we're finding out, is quite a lot!) Personally, many of the rpgs I see for the calcs, even the best ones (like Kevin's) are revolutionary for a calculator, but don't actually break new ground for what can be done with rpgs on ANY platform. I don't mean the graphics are supposed to be revolutionary compared to, say, Windwaker or Star Ocean, but that we can have things that have never been done before. Orignal plots. Original map design, orignal battle engines, orignal styles of gameplay. I'm all for originality. And, of course, for showing up everybody else.   B)cool.gif

So you say you want a revolution...something original.  Thats what TSOD is all about, A really deep story, tons of different maps, and an unusual battle system.  I am with you. The term Basic sounds a little demeaning...

Let's not forget the graphics sir. :)smile.gif They're just as important as the code, especially when you want top-notch RPG's.

I don't think BASIC can possibly be competitive with assembly as a gaming language. But BASIC does have advantages: it is easier to program for, so you can concentrate more on developing the game itself (which is what I really prefer to focus on anyways- graphics, plot, gameplay, etc), and there are more BASIC programmers. Sure, we need assembly subrotuiens to even begin to compete with pure assembly games, but I don't think it should be about how difficult a game is to program. We're here to make th best, most impressive games possible, and not to show off our coding skills. We want to delight the eye, test the reflexes, and entertain the mind. In the end, it's really about making games. Who cares if TVF is a thousand times more difficult to program than Aura? All I care about is (maybe, in like a thousand years :dang:banghead.gif ) making Aura as good or better of a game.

I aggree with that. Of course the code need to be optimised for both speed and memory tho *cough*Civilization Simulator*cough*. I saw a BASIC tunnel taking 4 KB of RAM once and it ran very slow. However I mostly care about doing a good game, regardless of the language used.
