Title: Your calculator collection
Post by: DJ Omnimaga on January 25, 2011, 04:33:32 am
It would be cool if people shared what calculator models they have and possibly pics. Here's a pic of my collection below [troll]with the vastly superior models in the last row :P[/troll]. I'll post when I got them later.

As you can see, I have about half as many as BrandonW and KermMartian. :P I lost my TI-81, though. :(

That is much O.O :P I just dislike that 8 calcs on the third row :P *grin*
Hey! *aeTIos looks closer*   thats Final Fantasy!

Let's identify the most interesting calculators:

1st row:
* TI-83+SE
* TI-Nspire ClickPad
* TI-92
* TI-89 Titanium

2nd row:
* TI-85
* TI-82
* TI-80
* TI-83
* TI-86
* TI-73
* TI-83
* TI-83+

3rd row:
no comment

Is that ok ?

lol, it's strange, that 3rd row seems to be all casio.

I bet with yours, brandonw's, and Kerm's calcs combined, you would have to turn APD off, otherwise all the calcs would turn off before you could take the picture.

[troll]with the vastly superior models in the last row :P[/troll].

Traitor! >:(

It's too bad you lost your 81, though.

As for me, it's just a single TI-83 Plus.

I bet with yours, brandonw's, and Kerm's calcs combined, you would have to turn APD off, otherwise all the calcs would turn off before you could take the picture.

I wonder what that would look like.

Since I don't have a lot of calcs, I made four pictures of the only one I have... :P

(http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s183/JosJuice/164039_149801351742223_127250623997296_257757_6652041_n.jpg)
This is my TI-84+SE. I bought it used a few months ago. It seems to be one of the earlier models... It has Boot code 1.00 and all of the extra RAM.

(http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s183/JosJuice/167304_149801448408880_127250623997296_257758_3294343_n.jpg)
This is the top of it. As you can see, I have a fancy ViewScreen connector, which I believe is rare...

(http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s183/JosJuice/179075_149801535075538_127250623997296_257759_322752_n.jpg)
The batteries I'm using right now are very cheap. I'm going to replace them soon. :P
Rechargeable batteries will work fine with the calc, right?

(http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s183/JosJuice/166626_149801645075527_127250623997296_257760_3371246_n.jpg)
This is what it looks like without a faceplate. I'm actually planning on buying another faceplate soon... But I don't know if they're sold anywhere in Sweden.

Well, the Prizm is TI's calculculator in spirit. It's not like many of the Casio people are hacking it  :P

2nd row:

* TI-86
* TI-73
* TI-83
* TI-83+

3rd row:

Is that ok ?
The calculator with the 2002 Omnimaga logo on it is a TI-83 Plus. As for the bottom row:

FX-7000G
FX-7700GE
CFX-9850G
Algebra FX 1.0 Plus
FX-7400G Plus
FX-9750G Plus
FX-9860G
FX-cg10

:D

Also I found my TI-81 again :D
I bet with yours, brandonw's, and Kerm's calcs combined, you would have to turn APD off, otherwise all the calcs would turn off before you could take the picture.
Not really, I turned all the ones I put batteries in ON. The TI-80 is borked, though, so the LCD content is all glitchy.

EDIT: Also in 10 years I will have a TI-83 Plus Gold Edition, it seems, which will be exactly like a TI-83 Plus Silver Edition, but in golden-ish color. My 83+SE is slowly turning into one. O.O

Wow ! Great collection DJ !  :thumbsup:

I have
-a ti84+SE (with a "designed for windows XP" and a "pentium 4" sickers on it...  ;D)
-a ti89 titanium (the grey one)
-a HP35s
-a TI-40 Collège II (probably the calculator I use the most !)
-a Sharp scientific calculator, but I don't remember its name.

 :)

I have a 84+, but since it holds so many awesome projects of mine I consider to be worth 3 84+'s
Title: Re: Your calculator collection

I have...

A TI-83+ with a broken link port
A TI-89 Titanium (my main calc)
A TI-84+ Silver Edition (with DoorsCS, of course)

My dad has an HP-48 (SX I think?) and maybe another HP graphing calculator too. I've never played around with them.

That reminds me, a few years ago someone finished an HP-48SX project he stopped working on 16 years earlier then resumed. It was some sort of RPG I think.

THe 83+ has no extra RAM pages at all. In fact, it has one less page than the newer 84+. It's the older 84+s and the 83+SE that has the 128 KB of RAM.

Hmm if I look in my scientific calcs I also got an Aurex SC-107 (which was re-released by several other companies under clone names and costed about $2-8), which I have since 1998 but stopped working around 2002. It was cool because it quickly converted bin to dec, hex and octal or vice-versa. Pic here: http://www.cantares.on.ca/muscalc/www/DCP_3141.jpg

I also got a Casio FX-270W Plus.

I shall post a new pic of my calcs soon, although just the graphing ones. I might include all manuals I still have.

I's gots me an 84+SE and an 89t. I've barely made a mark on my 84's memory and my 89... I use that to play pokemon red version... so most of the memory has been used :D

83 + SE - I use this for my Basic coding
Title: Re: Your calculator collection

Top Row: TI-92+, TI-89 HW1, TI-83+ SE
Bottom Row: Casio FX-9860G Slim, Casio FX-6300G, Tandy PC7

The Casio FX-6300G is the smallest graphing calculator (that I know of). It has a 40x25 pixel LCD, Casio BASIC, and has 400 bytes RAM.

The Tandy PC7 is not a graphing calculator but rather a scientific calculator with a BASIC language like GWBASIC; it has 2Kb RAM.

Thanks DJ! :) You have quite a nice collection too. Who has more; you or tifreak?

Yes... The Casio FX-6300G has the same BASIC as the Casio FX-7700G. I bought a Casio FX-7700G and my FX-6300G back in 1993, but sold the FX-7700G in order to purchase the original TI-92 in 1996. Then, I sold my TI-92 in order to purchase a TI-89 (from Dimension-TI) in 1999. I programmed a version of Scorched Earth on the Casio FX-6300G complete with mountains and wind -- it required 396 bytes of the 400 bytes of available RAM. It was awesome... I think I still have it written down on paper.

Hehe, I found out that mine does that... On accident... I typed a wrong hex digit and I was utterly amazed to find that I had to turn my calc upside down to read it properly :D
Title: Re: Your calculator collection
Post by: Mighty Moose on January 28, 2011, 07:20:14 pm
I think there is a flag somewhere that controls that, because my 84+ used to do that, but after I messed around with it a lot, it doesn't any more.  I really should use Calcsys and try to find that bit...
Title: Re: Your calculator collection
Post by: Xeda112358 on January 28, 2011, 07:26:59 pm
It's because it's a different LCD port. Writing a value between 0Ch through 0Fh will cause some sort of flip. 0Fh is what flips it upside down, 0Ch puts it normal, 0D and 0E flip it left/right or up/down, I just cannot remember which one does what :D

I think it's port $0A...

One thing, however: I thought he had more, because now I think I remember this pic from a while ago and I swear he said that was only half of his calcs. He buys a lot of broken 83+s then repairs them. Usually it's the LCD that is broken. Sometimes it's just missing columns of pixels and once he's done repairing the calc it works like new. Nonetheless him, TI-Freak8x, BrandonW and someone else got many more TI calcs than me, because 8 of my calcs are Casios.

Once I buy a decent camera,(soon) I'll post my collection. Mine includes:
TI-83+ BE(2), although one is on <s>temporary</s> permanent loan to my cousin...  <_<
TI-83+ SE: Dead now unfortunatley... RIP  :'(
TI-86
TI-89(HW 1) ;D
Hp 50G
Durabrand:  Its a cheapo no-name graphing calc that was 20$ at Wally world. :)
Also nice calc collection Ranman. Is the FX-6300G programmable?

I think I still have it written down on paper.

@Ranman: Awesome about the scorched earth clone! Only Ranman... ;D

The tandy one draws particular interest from me. It's old, and its really cool that it has a BASIC language on such a limited system. Gawd... I'm such a nerd. It reminds me of an old calc that one of my buddies got from his mom(she was a math teacher). This one actually had some oomph to it though. Not only was it programmable, but it supported programmable sound too! Nothing more that bleeps and bloops mind you, but it was still cool as hell. It even had a decent chunk of memory if i remember correctly. I just wish I could remember what brand the darn thing was...

*Update 6/9*:
New calcs added:
TI-73
TI-80
TI-81
TI-82 (not currently working)
TI-85

*Update 6/13*:
TI-84+ SE (produced in P plant, so no xtra ram :()

Is ebay my best bet for spare calculator parts? My TI-83's pretty beat up and missing the battery door, it would be nice to have it restored but I haven't been able to find replacement parts.

@Mike/Yunhua Kerm actually buys broken LCD calcs on Ebay and repares them. If you ever get a broken LCD calc and would like to repair it, Kerm might be able to give you tips, and he even has a topic about this somewhere on his forum.

Personally, 4 of my calcs are broken in some ways:
-TI-83+: The one with an Omni logo on it has a broken link port. I lost part of it.
-TI-83+ Silver Edition: When turned OFF, Battery power is being drained as fast as when the calc is turned ON. Basically, even if the calc remains turned OFF, unused for 2 days, if I pick it up again afterward the batteries are dead.
-TI-80: Glitchy LCD and maybe broken RAM, since stuff displays randomly or something.
-TI-92: About 3 missing columns of pixels.

Yeah I remember about your TI-Nspire. X.x I think that might be a reason why TI got rid of the keypad idea in the CX. I'M sure you were not alone with this problem, since a lot of students play 83+ games.

@Darl181 lol I wish I had a 9750GII/+ instead of 9750G+, because I would immediately turn it into a 9860G :D

I do not think there is any. Following a French tutorial somewhere on TI-BANK, you just have to Flash the OS or something then replace it with a FX-9860GII OS. Kinda like how you can convert a TI-73 into a TI-83 Plus.

I doubt it. I think it's just the models with a II at the end. These ones has a the same SH3 processor as the one in the 9860G and 9860GII and the necessary Flash memory. The difference with the 9860GII is that the 9750GII has no backlight.

I got a TI-85 and 86, though, which are the same family (although the 85 is much faster but have less memory)

With the new beta releases, only a few games, like Pokemon or other with 32kb(I think) save files, don't work on the extra RAM-less calcs. I don't have the extra RAM, but I've been able to play both Kirby's Dreamland 1 and 2, as well as several other games. I've seen a few unfortunate 83+es in my algebra ii class...afaict a bunch of pressure is put on she screen or something and the liquid crystal gets out and spreads all over the screen.  Near the middle it looks like a hole, but the rest of the screen somehow works.

On my 84, there's a small blotch on the screen, where the contrast is always a bit darker.  Most noticeable with the screen inverted (like, ClrDraw:DrawInv) and lower-than-normal contrast (where the number in the top-right is about 4), but fortunately no "holes" ;D

I just have one TI-83 Plus, two TI-30X IIS (scientific) calcs, an old Casio FX (scientific), and a ton of four-function calcs. I actually have quite a collection of those four-function ones -- one is transparent, another translucent green, another is bendy silicone, and so on :D

@Darl181: Where'd you get the Sharp calculator from?
The local Kmart :P
It's pretty cool..it's kind of like the TI:Casio relationship but on the level of the 30s (lower price, more features) and with a Sharp.
ie. those four keys on top you can store keyboard shortcuts or variables into.  Also there's a quiz mode, and built-in base conversion :)
What I'd get over the 535 tho is the 516, it can solve equations and stuff.

Yeah, mine's a scientific (http://www.sharpusa.com/ForBusiness/SmallElectronics/Calculators/ELW535B.aspx).

Idk about that graphing calc.  It does have "PC-Link," but good luck finding programs/apps/whatever it uses :P

Apparently Sharp used to make touchscreen graphing calcs, but the site was last modified sometime in 2000 and they're not listed so I guess you'd have to ebay them.

@blue_bear_94:I do not know if asm is available nor do I know what processor it uses. Apparently there is very little information availabe about it. I am looking into it though. The good informationn though is that it does have a basic like language. I was looking at the pdf that sharp put out for this calculator and syntax wise and command wise the basic is near identical to what we have on the ti83 series. This also includes variable names and such, however; label names allow for a longer length. =)

The nspire has had one advantage over the 92 for me so far: Speed. Other than that it has been a worse experience in general, especially with the newer models. I went from the original clickpad to the CAS touchpad, and I have to say the original's layout was far better. Then, I transitioned to the 92. I can actually key stuff out with both hands now :P I just wish I could have the plus module.

I think he is only referring to the fact that it is a closed platform, not to calculating capacities or speed ;)

Yes, so that is what I said. He doesn't really care about calculating capacities (CAS, etc) but wants to developp on hos calcs, which is annoying on the CX CAS since TI always blocks Ndless.

Maybe it's just me but doesn't TI blocking Ndless create a game between coders and TI?  I'm sure some people enjoy trying to figure out how to get past the restrictions TI puts on its calculators.  :P

No. They didn't enjoy discovering that the OS 3.0.x didn't have any loophole that would allow the installation of Ndless, and they were surprised but not "happy" to discover that TI made an error in the OS 3.1 that got a loophole back. But they surely won't be happy at the next OS release when TI won't do that error again.

Well it's still alive, it's just that in 2011-12, after our only 2 PRIZM ASM coders stopped calc programming, almost every PRIZM user here migrated (and maybe some were invited? :P) to Cemetech and even now PRIZM dev was a bit quiet there in general lately.
Title: Re: Your calculator collection
Post by: willrandship on February 27, 2013, 05:35:56 pm
I doubt PRIZM development will ever see nearly as much love as the 84+ series. The 84+ had years of developers working up to it, not only from the 83+, but from all the past z80 calcs all the way back to the 81! The z80 became the de-facto standard for calculator programming, and the community just kept getting better at it.

This has not been the case with the PRIZM. Not that it's a bad platform or anything, it just doesn't have the background. The nspire suffers from a similar dilemma.
Title: Re: Your calculator collection
Post by: Sorunome on February 27, 2013, 09:12:01 pm
But the nspire stuff around here seems still more popular than the PRIZM, is that only because TI is more popular?
Title: Re: Your calculator collection
Post by: blue_bear_94 on February 27, 2013, 09:14:23 pm
The specs and the desire to jailbreak could be other causes.
Title: Re: Your calculator collection
Post by: willrandship on February 27, 2013, 10:34:52 pm
The nspire has also existed for a much longer period of time, and it uses a more common architecture.

Is the Durabrand calc programmable? I know Staples released a graphing calc a while ago and it is apparently semi-programmable, but its specs are similar to the FX-7000G from 1985. Also didn't Sharp make a graphing calc a while ago?

You and me have the same number of calculators, but not the same items. You have some items I don't (e.g. V200, Prizm, HP-50G, Lab Cradle), I have some calculators you don't (more Nspires, to begin with).

Yes it's a drawing tablet, I bought it so I'd use a bit less paper so a whiteboard will be coming soon as well. I also wanted to do some digital art stuffs (I need to make some concept art for a ~15 min. short film I have planned with Blender). The 30XB looks pretty nice indeed. Where do you see a dent on Trixie ? ???
(Also, Trixie and Roxanna exchanged their faceplates on the photo, so don't confuse, Trixie is in fact the one on the left, with the black faceplate :P)
And Carly has some customization I made when I was in Seconde, because then, "a lot" of people had the same calc as mine. But for the other calcs, Trixie has zStart displaying a pic of my rabbit at startup, Athena has a blue and red theme, and no one has a Prizm or a 76.fr or a 84+CSE in my school so only Carly needed customization ;)

What happened to the one in the bottom right (83+?) It looks like someone stabbed the screen D: Nice collection though :)

It actually doesn't have a display anymore. It's a headless calc now ^^
I've got it from a friend, no idea what happened to it. The screen was all cracked, I just removed it.

erm, is the 89+ all on the bottom only the case without the actual calc? O.O
It's a TI-92 Plus without mainboard. I got the mainbord still though, and it's still functional. I broke the screen of it during the 2006 TI-Freakware contest.

Darn that TI-83+ at the bottom looks like it went through some extremely rough times... D:
Like Jim said, he got it from a friend.
We(at least I :P) could never treat a calculator that bad. :P
(I broke an TI-92 I/O port once though...)

No, where did you get that idea? I like it because it has mechanical switches.
Also, the last four I got yesterday. The nspires and the 84 were 'hand-me-downs' from my cousin in college (she won craptons of math competitions and won calculators), and the 5100 was at a garage sale for $2.

I now have 1 of each of the following (in the order that I obtained them).
TI-84+SE (3 RAM pages, new LCD that supports flipping)
TI-89t
TI-84+ (8 RAM pages, old LCD)
Casio Prizm
TI-84 Pocket.fr

My collection is slowly growing. I  got the 84+SE 2009, the 89t in 2010, the 84+ in 2011 (used), the Prizm last year, and the 84 Pocket a few days ago. So my collection grows every year.

I never managed to get any Fargo stuff to work, though, so maybe I have the wrong ROM version or I am doing something wrong.

Click for full size

In order of acquisition: TI-85 (2005), TI-89 Titanium (2008), TI-83 (2010?), TI-86 (2012), TI-84 Plus BE (mid-2012), TI-81, TI-82 (both November 2012), [CBL (early 2013)]

And the scientific calcs: TI-35 (1994-ish design), TI-36X Solar (1996 design), TI-34 II, Explorer Plus powered by an AA battery, TI-30Xa (2 of them), TI-30X II S (2 or 3 of them), TI-36X Solar (the latest one), TI-30X MultiView, TI-34 MultiView, BA-II (I think), Casio fx-260 Solar, and a RadioShack two-line that is definitely a rebranded Casio. I only have a few of those in my calculator drawer though.

If their BASICs were a bit faster (especially the 86) I'd be programming exclusively for them. The 85 is acceptable though.
Title: Re: Your calculator collection
Post by: DJ Omnimaga on July 23, 2013, 11:56:54 pm
Yeah, this and the low popularity of them is why I never bothered porting any of my games to them (except the TI-81 port of Illusiat 1). Plus, in general programs are a bit larger too. Both size and speed issues are much worse on the 86 due to the memory layout. It's a shame that they're so slow because Illusiat 12 would have been nice on the 86.

Title: Re: Your calculator collection
Post by: CVSoft on July 24, 2013, 05:28:53 am
TI-86 vs. TI-83: Twice as big, twice as slow, (almost) twice the features, and a lot more memory.

My preferred programming platform is TI-82; it ensures compatibility and eases porting to TI-85 at the expense of strings. Fortunately Graphlink can fix the syntax to work with the 83. It's a bit smaller too, and the keys on my hardly-used 82 are nicely responsive.
Title: Re: Re: Your calculator collection
Post by: DJ Omnimaga on July 24, 2013, 11:45:29 am
Yeah this is why I considered developing some small games that don't use much complex math formulas (due to different order of operations) on the 82 when I got one, but the lack of strings made me hit a wall. X.x

Plus my 82 often misses pixel columns (usually it becomes fine when used for a while), which can be annoying for developing graphical games.

My TI-82 did the same thing (on columns 15 and 69), but the problem went away after playing around with the affected columns a lot and using fresh batteries. Weak batteries seemed to aggravate the problem.

Added a couple of calculators to the collection:
Two cfx 9850. The first one was broken, so I bought another one which works fine.
A pocket organizer by commodoor (I think it is made by Sharp, but it is rebranded for the Dutch market.) There is probably an issue with the capacitors because the little buzzer does not make a lot of sound. You can barely hear it. I prefer my psion.

This is an updated picture showing my color (backlighted) calculator collection. It also showcases how terrible the PS Vita camera is <_<

(http://img.ourl.ca//colorcalcs2.jpg)

Notice, however, how the HP Prime has the 2nd largest screen physically, despite being the smallest of the five calcs when its cover is removed. The only thing I dislike about the Prime screen is that unlike the four other models, the protection is made of glass rather than plastic, so it can probably break much easier if dropped on the floor or if you drop something on the calc like the corner of an heavy book.

On the other hand, the PRIZM gotta have by far the most scratches-prone screen. It's the only one of my five color calcs that got scratches after only a few months of use, even with nothing put over it. I bet that just dust did it.

Here's mine. :D My Nspire CX is missing (mom, give it back already !) But from left to right in the order I got them :
-TI-80. I learned programming on this one. I also changed the batteries only twice in 8 years. It still works great.
-HP 40g. This is one epic calc. It has a CAS by B. Parisse and is on par with the 83+ hardware wise but has a much more powerful and faster BASIC language. It is currently non functional due to me messing up something but I still have hope for it.
-TI-84+. My trusty 128k 84+ is still awesome. This is the calc that got me back in TI BASIC and on which I learnt ASM and Axe. I still use it as my secondary calc.
-TI-83+SE. I found it. My first SE calc. Unfortunately it is the revision 0 with battery issues and I broke the LCD module. I can still salvage an 83+ to fix it but I'm waiting for Geekboy's upgrade PCB to make an epic calc.
-TI-82 stats fr. Functionally an 83 parcus, I don't use it at all.
-TI-83+SE VSC. My new main calc. It's a full fledged 83+SE but with the viewscreen hardware which I'm looking forward to hacking. It also looks awesome (better colors than an 83+BE IMO and the SE front bezel).

the Classpad 400 is incredibly slow and overpriced, which might explain why it's rarely discussed anywhere. Granted, drawing lines/shapes is faster than on the PRIZM, but maths are even slower... and some people or charts say that this calc has a 200 MHz CPU?

It was surely very nice amount.. I could have added some more fake items in the deal.

I have 20 more than you :trollface:

I'm planning to get one of the Sharp graphing calcs at one point, though. I think some have getkey and other basic commands.

Yes, I forgot the model names, but I'm sure it can easily be found on Google. I forgot if all of them are programmable nor their technical specs, though.

The programming language on Sharp Calcs is extremely similar to TI-BASIC. You'd have no trouble picking it up. They lack getkey unfortunately. The EL-9600 is pretty nice though actually, and even has a touch screen with a stylus. The touch screen is old style and a bit limited, but it does make for pretty easy navigation. When going back to the TI-83+ Series after playing with my Sharp, I kept wanting to touch menus on the screen to navigate them. >< I found a few of them on Ebay, and some were even from Canadian sellers. You can pick on up fairly cheap (~$10-$20) with shipping (at least back when I looked).

*Edit* The EL-9900 is newer and has a faster processor and larger screen. It also has a keypad that you remove and flip over to access different stuff. One side is for like middle school level Math, and the other is for more advanced stuff (highschool/college). Pretty interesting concept. This one lacks the touch screen though. In addition, since it is their current model it is more expensive.

Strange, I swear I saw a getkey command in some Sharp EL code before O.O (It was limited to just certain keys, though). Maybe it was for a menu?

TI-Nspire CX (Rev.D, 3.1 Ndless)

CASIO fx-85ES
TI-84 Plus C Silver Edition

I don't hate apple, just that a lot of people do. And there's an option? The only things I'm good are downloading, ti connect file sending, and wabbitemu (which I know the basics)

I love apple...

Oh nice I didn't know you had a 49g. Did you do any programming for it?

Also your image doesn't work.

Think I fixed the image.

I've only written a few user rpl programs. I don't have the link cable so I haven't done anything in asm or sys rpl.

Oh wow I just realized the 49g you got is the original. Is it still working fine with no rainbow screen stuff? The early 49g models had lots of hardware problems.
Title: Re: Your calculator collection

I can get the rainbow screen effect if I look at it a steep angle. The 49g is in nearly pristine condition, I inherited it and don't use it too often. I do most of my programming and maths on my TI calcs so I can't say the same for them as far as condition.

Here's my collection:

The 83+ SE isn't mine, it's my sister's, but I can use it whenever I want practically, I got the 84+ CSE, 85, and one 84+ SE all for free :D And yes, the 73 Explorer is running the TI-83+ operating system, so I can run 83+ programs on it.
