Axe / Text
« on: December 14, 2012, 11:49:05 am »
Hi!

For AxeRL I'd like to make a log, that is, hit messages and level feeling messages etc. are all stored to a buffer so the player can go back and re-read them....
I'd like to be able to add strings and so on... and also to put text into a temp buffer to display in-game too.
Any advice?

Hey guys,

I know I haven't been around for quite a while, but anyway.

I am planning to write a roguelike in Axe, the plot of which would be similar to the original Rogue, but with the Amulet of Yendor replaced by the Axe...
Would you guys prefer a coffebreak roguelike or a full-blown nethack-style one?

If that makes no sense to you the terms are all 'defined' on rougebasin.com

All ideas appreciated!  ;D

Axe / Bitmaps or sprites?
« on: August 30, 2012, 01:34:37 pm »
Question: which is faster - bitmaps or a 8x8 sprite array of similar size?
I know this question has been asked before but that was before ver 1.1.2 wasn't it?

Axe / Dungeon builder [resolved]
« on: August 19, 2012, 07:53:45 am »
Hi
I really need some help turning this algorithm http://roguebasin.roguelikedevelopment.org/index.php/Dungeon-Building_Algorithm#The_algorithm into Axe...
I've started by filling a 9*15 grid with 'wall' cell and digging out a room of 'floor' cells, but then I don't know how to scan for space, pick a direction for a corridor or find out which walls are next to a room.

Suggestions?

EDIT: Can someone delete this thread please? I worked it out anyway...

Edit (squidgetx) : Locked and title changed, since the thread and link might help others in the future

Other Calculators / Project death prevention?
« on: August 14, 2012, 12:12:27 pm »
I just spent about an hour trawling through loads of project threads and the like here, and I'm starting to find it depressing how many of them die out through lack of time. Another recurring theme appears to be developers disappearing on holidays...
 ???

Anyway fearing the health of my own project, I appeal to the superior wisdom of you who actually manage to complete your projects to find out just what it takes to see an idea all the way through  :P

(N.B. I did a search to see if this has been done before but the search was buggy so I'm not sure  :banghead:)

Recently I've used MAME www.mamedev.org to develop a serious addiction to games like Garou: Mark of the Wolves and Soul Calibur I...
The more retro the better!

Thoughts?

General Calculator Help / Game Dev Process
« on: August 07, 2012, 07:04:38 am »
Not sure whether this has really been discussed before, but I was just interested to see how people get their projects finished, how they plan them out, what order they complete the various parts in (i.e. title screen, physics, sprites, etc.)

Thanks!
