News / Ndless v1.1 released
« on: July 31, 2010, 09:37:01 am »
-> Ndless v1.1

This is a bug fix and usability release, compatible with Computer Link 1.4 and with a build chain easier to use.

Non-developers users with Ndless already installed may not be interested by this version,  except for the OS upgrade fix.

Developers, as Ndless is work in progress, you will have to slightly adapt your source code, Makefiles and development environment as described in the section "Upgrading your developments and scripts" of the ReadMe file. Sorry for the inconvinience.

Here is the changelog:

Installer:
  - NEW: Compatible with Computer Link Software 1.4
  - NEW: Possible manual step to work around missed reboots
  - FIX: Installer doesn't force downgrade anymore when already on OS v1.1
  - FIX: Some transfer errors were not correctly reported
 Loader:
  - FIX: The OS could not be upgraded while Ndless was installed
 Tools:
  - NEW: Building executables made a little easier. See the demo's Makefile and "How do I
set up a development environment?" section above.
  - NEW: Supports YAGARTO v4.5.0
  - FIX: MakeTNS: better error checking
 Include files:
  - NEW: Added fgets, stdin, stdout, stderr (thanks bsl)
  - NEW: Added printf, fprintf (thanks bwang)
  - NEW: Exhaustive key constants (thanks bwang)
  - NEW: added halt, idle
  - NEW: (ARM) added halt
  - FIX: log_rs232, fread

TI-Nspire / Re: Hmmm.....Nspire OS cheating?
« on: July 31, 2010, 05:10:49 am »
To make things a little clearer:
RunOS is designed to specifically load official OS. It is a proof-of-concept and probably needs to be much reworked to be fully functional.
geogeo has temporary stop any work on TI-Nspire development, so I'm currently the only maintainer of Ndless and its related tools, and I first want to focus on Ndless.
We would certainly have to deal with legal issues if RunOS were to be released by threatening TI's revenue model. I don't want to see TI be motivated by this in the arms race.

Making a general OS loader for third-party OS is much more interesting, but not straight-forward: boot 2 checks the signature of the OS before loading it, so the official OS needs to be kept used as a trampoline. And of course boot 2 is signed and cannot be changed.

Nleash is only compatible with OS 2.1 as stated in the ReadMe file, although this infinite startup is strange. Please follow the procedure described in the troubleshooting section of the documentation.

I am really sorry this happened, I know how it feels :(

For your new TI-Nspire projects, squalyl would probably be glad to to host them on his Subversion repository if you want. This is an easy solution to avoid such incidents.

When does the OS get validated? At each boot, or just when it is installed?
I've only skimmed through the topic, but the answer posted doesn't seem to be correct. The boot2 and OS signatures are checked at each boot.

As long as you don't reinstall OS 2.1, there's no downgrade protection.
This seems not to be true for TouchPad though: after an upgrade to OS 2.0, you may need to upgrade to OS 2.1 and run Nleash.

Yes for non-CAS, with a classic ClickPad.

There's a wave of OS 1.1 nostalgia with the release of OS 2.1...

-> Nleash v1.0

[edit] If this is not clear enough in the documentation: Do not try to downgrade a TouchPad TI-Nspire to OS 1.1 with a TouchPad keypad. You need a ClickPad keypad to run OS 1.1.

It is signed independently (wouldn't it be too easy?)

If you don't want to post the dump, just send it to me: [email protected]
You shouldn't post anything, it is copyrighted material.

I am sorry posting a picture before any release has been wrongly interpreted.

Here is a second sample thanks to calc84maniac's emulator:

The hack installer still needs a little more work on stability issues before a release.

That's great!
calc84maniac, did you write it from scratch?
