Nostalgia / Re: Nostalgia Origins - Sky's Story

It's gonna be way shorter.
It'll probably be closer to the length Nostalgia was originally gonna be (about 4-5 bosses).

Nostalgia / Nostalgia Origins - Sky's Story
« on: November 22, 2010, 09:31:25 pm »
This is gonna be my entry for Cage Match #3.
It's a prequel to Nostalgia that tells the story of Sky and his journey to stop the First War, as well as his witnessing of the birth of the Creator.
The war between the Great Beings split the world into factions: those who supported the light, and those who supported the dark. Only a few remained neutral.

It revolves around Sky:

And his best friend Kain:

They are seperated shortly before the events of the story. At the beginning of our tale, Sky is journeying to find the fortress where those who are neutral in this war reside.

During his quest, Sky meets two others whom he persuades to join him:

Kurai, the dark warrior:

And Hikari, the holy knight:

While you build up a team over the course of the game, battles are only 1v1. Sky is pitted against the enemy, but he can call upon his companions to perform special attacks or skills.
You control Sky throughout the game, btw.

Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhthegamehh crap.

Try quoting this. ;D
Very nice.  Also, what if we were in space, Netham45?  Can't shoot us down there!!!
That's easy. I'd open a dimensional rift for him to fire his lasers through. Then I would shift outer space to a seperate dimension and cast Ice 9 into said dimension, halting all thermodynamic activity there forever.

6. Cooking times would be entered using RPS (Reverse Polish Sausage) Notation inside of the quadratic solver.
Hey, we are discussing TI microwave, not HP microwave!
It would fit with bad user interface, though... And I'm positive there are RPN programs for 83+/84+'s.
But yeah, HP would probably be more likely to use RPS.

Moved. :P

As for tile size, 8x8 (that Final Fantasy game) is usually the standard (and easy to work with in Axe), but imo it's a little cramped. I used 8x8 for a while, before I switched to 12x12. Some people like 16x16 (E:Sor and Dying Eyes, for example) but then sometimes the field of view is too narrow.

I have a sword sprite somewhere....*rummages around...

Some people also do a certain size for their tiles, then a slightly taller sprite for the characters. Examples: 8x8 tiles, 8x12 chars; 16x16 tiles, 16x24 chars.
8x8 is the easiest to work with in Axe, but the final decision is up to you.

Alright, for all thos pixel artist out there, I have a new request.
I'd like a flowing water animation which can be any number of frames you see fit as long as it's reasonable (not more than like 16).
I'd also like the overworld sprites for Roland and Aria modified so the bottom 8 pixels (if you imagine the sprite in an 8x16 rectangle)  are standing in the water.
Thanks in advance!

FinaleTI, if you don't mind, could you please stop development on your game until Monday? ASHBAD_ALVIN extended the deadline of the Team Battles to Monday. I'll extend my deadline as well.
Kay, but is it OK if I still work on the graphics for it?

Ash: Phoenix / Re: Ash: Phoenix

Yep, I redraw every frame... I'm gonna go request some better water tiles than what I've been testing with though.

As for my maps, they can be up to 96x64, support wall, floor and ceiling tiles, as well as the aforementioned water tiles. My maps are basically the equivalent of two pictures, the first is used to determine the tile: If the pixel is off, draw a floor tile; if the pixel is on and the one below it is off, draw a wall tile; if the pixel is on and the one below it is on, draw a ceiling tile. The second pic is used to determine if the tile is a water tile. If the pixel is on, draw a water tile at the current frame. Then OR both layers over each other so you can't walk through water, etc.
The current map layer is stored on the back-buffer, and the current screen is on the main buffer.

I'm working on NPCs too. I'm just unsure of how I want to handle them, like do I want them to walk around, do I want them to just turn around in place, or just stand still? Nice about that shops/inn thing. I'm thinking of styling my NPCs after the way you did yours.
