Gaming Discussion / Re: the perfect platformer
« on: November 05, 2010, 05:06:10 pm »
Kay. Sorry.
I don't play too many platformers, but I like simple ones, like the classic Mario games.
Some features I like are animated tiles (flowing water, drifting clouds, etc.), teleportation blocks, and power-ups. Power-ups that make you stronger or give you special attacks. Irregular physics like in Kirby (or Raylin's Gravity game) can be cool if done right. As for theme, I don't really care, as long as it isn't super corny or anything.

Check out my new avatar. :P

I could have sworn I'd seen that somewhere before ... maybe in someone's sig? I think it might have been Noah, but I'm not sure.
I found the original in a gif DJ posted in the 2009 Contest Rules thread. I just cut out the CalcCapture part of the gif so it's just Rick dancing.

Oh, and you lost the game!

Due to the rand calc reset, about half of the files are gone... :(
I backed it up, but it was long time ago...
So I'm thinking about not giving up and try with axe this time since the games started to get slower even with the optimization anyway. One question: how do you draw rectangle while still keeping a picture on screen?
Sorry to hear about the reset.

Making an RPG in Axe isn't all that easy, but if you stick with it, I'm sure you can do it. ;D
One suggestion though, simplify the battle engine as much as you can, because it can crush you and your soul if you make it too complicated.
Don't be afraid to post code, too. It could help a lot in the long run, as you can get help with it, plus you have a backed up copy of it.

Isn't FinaleTI using both Axe, BASIC, and xLib?
Yep. I'm currently using Axe, BASIC, and DCS7.

Very similar.  If you know Java, you should be able to easily learn C#.
I do in fact know Java though.  What is TFS and is it in the free version?
I don't believe the express version has TFS support, but I could be wrong.

Goody. I'm taking AP Computer Science this year and we're going to be using Java, plus I got a book on C#.

Yeah, Mystery Dungeon didn't take away key items or anything you had equipped.
