TI Z80 / Elimination RPG: Early Release Build!!
« on: November 23, 2021, 02:21:23 am »
Here it is!  An early release build / test build of my new RPG game "Elimination."  If you like Final Fantasy, Earthbound and Pokemon, you'll probably like this game.  Download the game here:  http://ceme.tech/DL2201

This is an early release build.  That means that this is for testing purposes.  If you manage to finish the game, you won't be able to see the final cutscene because it's not ready yet, but your game will be saved, and then you can see the ending simply by loading your saved game once the final cutscene is ready to go.

There are two things I'd like to know:
1. Does the game work?  (I've only been testing this on an emulator)
2. Is the game too easy or too hard?

You can send me an email or make a post here if you find a bug or if you think the game is too easy or too hard.

What do I mean by if the game is too easy or too hard?
* The first two levels should be easy.  Levels 9,10 and 11 should be hard but not frustrating like NES Battletoads or Atari 2600 E.T.
* Are there any weapons that are overpowered?
* Are there any weapons or projectiles that are too expensive or too cheap?
* Do you find that you have to return to the main hub too often to heal yourself?
* Is money too easy or too hard to come by?
* Is it too easy or too difficult to level up?
* Is there a world where one character gets under-used because he / she can't fight most enemies?
* Are any of these bosses (besides the Alien CIC) too easy or too hard? Firebird, supercomputer, Zebella, Balkstone, Tank Mark X, Cardon Bol, Red Hawk

I'll be able to fix bugs and statistics, such as how much money a robot gives you, how much health you get for leveling up, how much damage a weapon can do, etc. I won't be able to add any more features. For example, I was hoping to add an option so that you could instantly heal all your health at once instead of pressing "heal" over and over, but I won't be able to.  I was also hoping to add an option where damaging shields with protons gives you more experience points, but I won't be able to.

News / It's here! Slova released!
« on: June 15, 2013, 04:37:41 pm »
After fixing several bugs and adding features, Slova is here!  Slova, a fan-made sequel to Word Rescue, is a 2D platformer aimed at helping you learn a new language.  Your goal is to match English words with words in another language.  Use nuclear weapons to kill the gruzzles that are trying to stop you, and collect E-book readers and letters to increase your high score!

Better yet, you can customize Slova!  You can create language packs for Spanish, French, German, anything you want.  Furthermore, full source is provided.

Included are 4 language packs -- Russian, Dutch, Swedish and English Rhymes.

Enjoy the game, and let me know of any bugs!

Miscellaneous / Is this true about America?
« on: March 24, 2013, 12:13:34 pm »
There were some students in my Russian class who had some problems with the way I taught.  But instead of bringing their problems to me, they brought their problems to one of their friends, who would share the problem with me and not disclose who the others were.  This is quite appropriate in Russia.

Even though it could happen in America, from what I know it's not appropriate, especially in business.  Am I correct?  I want to address this to my students who hope to do business in America.

TI Z80 / Slova progress
« on: February 23, 2013, 10:05:48 am »
Slova is pretty much done since no one has found any bugs or unusual difficulties.  So I just wanted to let you know why I haven't released it -- I'm teaching again, which has slowed down my progress with the Russian language pack.  (I know that at least two people want it, and I want it to be good rather than just "thrown together")  Also, I'm waiting for annoyingcalc's Japanese language pack.

Miscellaneous / Which Daffy Duck / Porky Pig cartoon was this?
« on: January 29, 2013, 02:48:11 pm »
I remember watching the beginning of a cartoon where Porky Pig and Daffy Duck were trying to escape when the ground was cracking open, but then the ground beneath them split open and they fell down into it, screaming.

At that point I wasn't able to see any more.  Does anyone remember which cartoon this was so that I can watch it?

Art / Slova -- Need help with "Paradise" level
« on: January 07, 2013, 03:37:24 pm »
Without giving away too many spoilers, one of my levels in Slova needs to look like an absolute paradise, somewhere you'd really want to live.  I tried my best to make it look appealing, but in my opinion it's not enough.

Can anyone give me hints and/or tiles?  Feel free to play around with this image :)

ASM / Ti-83+ RAM from $8000
« on: January 06, 2013, 02:27:09 am »
I have some RAM code that takes up 478 bytes, and I'm storing it at $8000.  If I run an application, is there anything from $8000 on that needs to be preserved?

I'm asking because it seems like exiting the app with JForceCmdNoChar might be causing problems.  It could be another reason, but I don't know.

ASM / Creating AppVars with SPASM
« on: January 04, 2013, 04:00:20 am »
If I have a file with data (.db, etc.) that I want to compile with SPASM, what's the easiest way to make an appvar out of it?

Gaming Discussion / Guest passes for "Heart of the Swarm?"
« on: December 31, 2012, 10:06:56 am »
Hello friends, is there anyone planning on purchasing HOTS who doesn't know whom to give guest passes to?  If the game comes with guest passes, I would love a guest pass, but only if you don't know who else to give one to  ;D  If and when it happens, please send me a PM with the code.

THANK YOU!

Edit:  I'll reply here if I don't need one so that you can offer it to someone else

I volunteer at an orphanage, and the children wanted the chocolate balls with the little toys inside of them!  So I bought some for their Christmas gift.

Art / Extent of Copyright Laws with sprites
« on: December 23, 2012, 01:03:51 pm »
For this topic, I want to know what's LEGAL, not what I can "get away with."

The game I'm creating, "Slova," which is based on Word Rescue, is going to be free, and I plan to credit the author of Word Rescue, 3D Realms.  Whatever the case, some of the sprites I created are based off of Word Rescue sprites, but I didn't rip them, just did some pixel art.  For other sprites I took sprites off a sprite sheet, turned them into black and white and pixel-edited them.

Legally, am I breaking any copyright laws?

TI Z80 / Slova -- A language-learning game
« on: November 29, 2012, 09:36:52 pm »
I always enjoyed the game Word Rescue when I was a kid, and it inspired me to make a game that will help me learn Russian -- or that will help other people learn Spanish, French, you name it!

Slova (the Russian word for "word") is a game that helps you learn vocabulary in a language of your choice.  It will be completely open source to make this possible.

Story:

Spoiler For Spoiler:
It has been 15 years since the events in Word Rescue, when the gruzzles stole words from books to keep people from reading..  You are now a fully grown adult, and the gruzzles have other plans -- world domination!  They figure that the best way is to do this is doing what they're best at -- stealing words.  If they can steal words from language books, nobody will learn how to communicate with each other, and within 10 years the gruzzles plan to take over Earth.  The gruzzles are cloaked, and no one has any idea what's happening.

Benny Bookworm, your friend from Word Rescue, is retired in Hawaii, and nowadays he doesn't give a hoot about what the grizzles are planning to do.  So you have to take matters into your own hands.  Putting on a suit with a prototype cloak-detector, and arming yourself with nuclear weapons to kill those tough-armored gruzzles, you set out to save Earth from this newest threat...

In the game, you need to match English words to the words in the other language -- in this case you match English words to their Russian words.  When you match 7 pairs you can go to the next level.

Every time you collect a question mark you will receive a word in English.  Search for a "smiley face" with the Russian word that you think is correct.  If you find the correct word, you will score some points, and you will be one step closer to finishing the level.  If you find the incorrect word a gruzzle will appear.

For bonus points and more nukes, collect letters to form a "mystery word," as well as collecting all of the Kindle (c) book readers.

The game engine is finished.  I will continue to work on this game until I get bored of creating levels (or until I've created enough), after which I'll put in the finishing touches.
