ASM / Why are undocumented instructions "undocumented"?
« on: December 29, 2010, 09:39:46 am »
Why did the Z80 producers leave some code operations undocumented?  Did they not have time to "test" these instructions, did they come about accidentally in the design of the processor, or what?

Gaming Discussion / Gameplay rather than graphics and gimmicks
« on: December 28, 2010, 04:21:17 pm »
Remember the days when the work needed to make a video game was emmence?  Development teams were somewhat small, programming had to be done in ASM, and of course the consoles themselves were limited.  And yet people these days still love playing those games!  (I myself love the original Metroid.)

With huge development teams and C++, I personally would love to see games made in similar style to the old games, but longer.  Sure, we can vamp up the graphics, but so much time spent on game gimmicks, extra animations and special moves could be spent on extending the gameplay time of the basics.  Any comments on what it would be like if, for example, a year-long period was used to make Metroid with modern colors and looks but NES engine, graphics and gameplay to allow enough time to make a 600-hour long game?

Miscellaneous / One-Year Thank You / Reflection
« on: December 28, 2010, 01:16:57 pm »
This is now my 22nd birthday, as well as exactly one year that I've been on Omnimaga.  And what a great year it has been!  I got two projects started that I wouldn't have thought up on any other forum.  I've learned more about computers--yes, computers--then I learned from reading books and from programming.  And for sure, talking on this site has improved my social life, which austism hindered.

Thanks to everybody on Omnimaga for a great year!  In particular, I want to thank the following people who have impacted me in one way or another.

First and foremost: DJ Omnimaga.  Thanks DJ, you're what makes Omnimaga the greatest calculator forum ever!

The rest, in no particular order:

Miscellaneous / A reminder -- Showing respect for that one person
« on: December 25, 2010, 06:33:44 pm »
Hello all,

As you know, our biggest goal in Omnimaga is community.  The only way we are going to have community is by respect for each other.  That does mean that if one person is bothered by something reasonable (for example bothered by something other than being banned for an action he deserved) we need to change our actions around that particular person.  Our community is going to hurt if this is not a habit of ours.

I had a friend in my early years of college--not a girlfriend, but a girl friend, if you will.  Unfortunately, even though I knew how upset she was at my teasing her, I kept on going.  Why?  Because nobody else was bothered by how I teased them, so why should she be any different?  She lost it and our friendship broke up, my loss.

"Our community goal is to provide a discussion environment free of any hostility for ALL coders," and so we don't want to lose somebody on the site because he or she feels threatened.  As a poor example, I know that I do not liked hearing the work F**K for instance.  Now, if there were two friends using that word all the time, and I am not involved in the conversation, I shouldn't try to stop it.  It's none of my business.  But I would leave the website if people pointed that word at me all the time

So guys, if there's only one person who doesn't like what you are doing, don't do it directly towards him, even though your other friends are okay when they are involved.  If only one person hates negative critism, don't give him any no matter how many other people like all forms of criticism.  Not knowing what a person doesn't like is reasonable, but we have no excuse once we gain knowledge of a member's personality.

News / Correlation Instruction Manual

Correlation

Since Correlation is coming out for testing in January, I know there's a lot of "eager beavers" wanting to start on some projects.  So here's the manual for those of you who want to do some early reading!  There's also a table that you will need to look at.

Please let me know in the comments if there's anything you don't understand.  In addition, let me know if your name is in the credits and you would like to go by a different name--or by both your real name and your online name.  (I'll need to know your real name if you choose that option :D)

Does anyone know of a good, FREE screen recording software package for stuff like youtube?  One of my friends wants to create a video tutorial for Correlation

Computer Usage and Setup Help / How to Use Mono
« on: December 18, 2010, 04:07:40 pm »
The Mono website does not do a good job of explaining how I can use Mono to run a VB.net application on Macintosh and Linux.  Can anyone enlighten me?

Correlation / Request for a Java Programmer
« on: December 17, 2010, 04:30:28 pm »
As many of you know, Correlation is coming out for testing in about a month.  If there are any Java programmers who would like to write a simple, but much-needed application, it would be greatly appreciated.

There are two options available.  It will be "one-or-the-other", since I will not need both.

1. Easier: Create an application where a user can paste text.  The application will alter the text by turning it backwards, and then skipping every 5th, 6th, and sometimes 7th/8th character.  The new text will be available for the user to copy and paste.
2. Create a Correlation Font Compiler.  I wrote one, but it requires .NET, and I am concerned about cross-platforming and all.  I will have the exact .8xp file format provided, so all you would need to do is create the code to accept user values and write an .8xp file.

Thanks for any help!

Miscellaneous / What do you think about when you visit omnimaga?
« on: December 16, 2010, 07:12:15 pm »
When you come onto this website, what is the thing you enjoy the most, whether you are thinking about it, talking about it or recieving it?

For example, from what I remember, Iambian likes cherries, Raylin likes squirrel ninjas, and DJ Omnimaga likes lobsters.

For me, it's lobsters.

Normally, if nothing has changed since the last time you graphed equations, displaying the graph screen will simply cause your graph to load instantly, there is no redrawing.

In Ti-Basic, something like "1->Y1" will cause DispGraph to redraw the entire graph.  But it's not the most optimized way.  Is there anything faster?  A cookie and a bag of peanuts goes to the helpful person who gives me the fastest, most optimized command to force a graph redraw upon reaching the command DispGraph.

Thanks, everyone!

ASM / Is there a way to cancel tracing using the trace hook?
« on: December 16, 2010, 12:25:01 pm »
If the trace hook is on, is there any code that will keep tracing from happening whenever Trace is using inside of a Ti-Basic program?  I have a very important use for Trace that cannot make use of the parser hook

By the way, it's hook $9BA8

TI-BASIC / Speed of Asm(
« on: December 16, 2010, 11:38:46 am »
When used in a Ti-Basic program, how fast does something like Asm(FDCB368E) run in comparison with other lines in a Ti-Basic program?  Meaning is it slowest?  One of the slowest?  Average speed?  Fast?

ASM / YAPC (Yet another Parser Question)
« on: December 15, 2010, 09:20:18 am »
How do I find out for sure where a string is located after being parsed?  For example, Text(1,1, "AAAAA")--how do I know where in RAM AAAAA is?  I can't help thinking it has to do with OP1, but I'm not positive  :(

Still looking at next January for the testing period!

I finished the AND, OR, XOR, Mask routines, my next step is using e^( to display small text.
