ASM / Calculator's Interrupt Routine
« on: December 29, 2010, 06:15:56 pm »
Does anyone know EVERYTHING that the TI-83+ does during im 1?  I know it checks the link port, decrements APD, checks the keypad and blinks the cursor, but I'm wondering if there's anything else.  I'm trying to decide if it's worth disabling from time to time.

Introduce Yourself! / Re: official retirement
« on: December 29, 2010, 04:02:03 pm »
Hey there!

You may have noticed that I have visited these forums less regulary lately. Reason, complete loss of interest in calcs. Seriously, all the fun is out of it for me now. I can't exactly say how or why but I am just bored to death by calcs. Maybe because I value real-life (events) more then virtual ones. I might still check this site every now and then but from now on I won't login (likely) anymore.

The biggest reason for me to leave is that it releases some stress of my shoulders. Sorry to blow off that hard but I just feel little obligation to finish anything I started here, not because I don't want but because it isn't real enough for me. I procrastinate anyway...

A huge thanks to all the forum members, I have learned alot!

A tremendous thanks to the staff for their consequent and valuable contribution to these forums.

A enormous thank you to DJ for making me a kind forum member instead of a rude one.

I want to emphasize that me leaving has nothing to do with this forum, it's just a personal choice.

I know this might come unexpected and I migh return after I have had my exams but changes are slight. Anyhow, thank you all for your valuable feedback and help! please don't mourn over this, I never really was a great contributor anyway so ;)

All the BEST!! :D

Good luck!

Does that mean you're done with S.A.D. permanently?  Or just until I have info I can give you?

ASM / Why are undocumented instructions "undocumented"?
« on: December 29, 2010, 09:39:46 am »
Why did the Z80 producers leave some code operations undocumented?  Did they not have time to "test" these instructions, did they come about accidentally in the design of the processor, or what?

S.A.D. (Seek and Destroy) / Re: [S.A.D.] Progress 2010
« on: December 29, 2010, 01:12:37 am »
This will be my last progress report for S.A.D. for 2010.  Next will be [S.A.D.] Progress 2011!  Happy New Year!

I finally figured out how I'm doing the partial fog of war with a moving ship.  Correlation needs to be done as soon as possible, and then I will be able to work on S.A.D. again.

Also animated tiles seems cool. I assume this just swaps between two font files, right? Personally, though, to have animated tiles I generally just set 0 to a variable then do Not(VAR->VAR then use the tile set corresponding to VAR.

Actually, that's a great idea, so that's how I'm going to do it now.  I was going to do it differently, but your idea is much better and more flexible.

I doubt people will have animated tiles with 8 frames, but that will be the limit.

Call it Metroid Universe and keep adding new regions to the world.

Kind of like WoW, huh?

Gaming Discussion / Gameplay rather than graphics and gimmicks
« on: December 28, 2010, 04:21:17 pm »
Remember the days when the work needed to make a video game was emmence?  Development teams were somewhat small, programming had to be done in ASM, and of course the consoles themselves were limited.  And yet people these days still love playing those games!  (I myself love the original Metroid.)

With huge development teams and C++, I personally would love to see games made in similar style to the old games, but longer.  Sure, we can vamp up the graphics, but so much time spent on game gimmicks, extra animations and special moves could be spent on extending the gameplay time of the basics.  Any comments on what it would be like if, for example, a year-long period was used to make Metroid with modern colors and looks but NES engine, graphics and gameplay to allow enough time to make a 600-hour long game?

Miscellaneous / One-Year Thank You / Reflection
« on: December 28, 2010, 01:16:57 pm »
This is now my 22nd birthday, as well as exactly one year that I've been on Omnimaga.  And what a great year it has been!  I got two projects started that I wouldn't have thought up on any other forum.  I've learned more about computers--yes, computers--then I learned from reading books and from programming.  And for sure, talking on this site has improved my social life, which austism hindered.

Thanks to everybody on Omnimaga for a great year!  In particular, I want to thank the following people who have impacted me in one way or another.

First and foremost: DJ Omnimaga.  Thanks DJ, you're what makes Omnimaga the greatest calculator forum ever!

The rest, in no particular order:

Correlation / Re: Correlation: A New Project Aimed at Ti-Basic Programmers

Nice, this means 10 times a second. You put the real(TESTFONT outside the For loop, though, I hope, right? :P

Yes, I did! :)

Wow thats awesome :D Even if it was the same speed it would still be epic, but now its even cooler :O

Yeah, I'm quite pleased--and surprised--with the results myself!  I am upset about the other slow commands in Ti-Basic, though...I had an unrealistic dream, though a dream nonetheless, that people could create smooth-scrolling 10 FPS Mario with this.  Doesn't look like it's going to happen ;D

Since it won't be hard to add, I'm adding another "advanced users" feature.  You can turn animated tiles on and off!  However, to make the speed of this as fast as possible, this works only with even-numbered tokens starting with Radian, such as Radian, Normal and Eng.  If you have font characters for both Radian and Degree, the two will switch back and forth between each other when animated tiles are turned on.

Correlation / Re: Correlation: A New Project Aimed at Ti-Basic Programmers

I've had a lot of people ask about the speed of Correlation.  Be aware that since this is a beta, the speed might be different in the final version.

Here's a program I wrote:

For(A,1,100)
Output(1,1,"AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA"
End

Then I timed it.  Afterwards, I added "real(TESTFONT" and changed Output( to ln(, making it a Correlation program.  I timed it again.

Normal Ti-Basic Version: 15 seconds
Correlation Version: 9 seconds

How long does it take to render?

You know, I'm not sure.  I plan to time it pretty soon, probably after I finish negative coordinates.  For sure, though, it still runs faster that TI routines
