Other / Re: What computer OS do you use?
« on: September 14, 2011, 11:32:39 pm »
Windows XP.  Like a lot of people, I am quite happy with it until I have no choice but to upgrade.  Incidentally, I have the Media Center edition, and the colors are majestic...favorite version of XP

NOOO!!!! I just sent back my 84+ SE because my school provided one. NOOOOOO!!!!
I can't play any good games now. NOOO!!!! (I only have an 83+)

Lol, you've still got plenty of time.  This game is still developing.  In the meantime, Wolfenstein 83+ and Gemini are great games, even though they take a lot of space

Elimination Developers / Re: Elimination: If you want to design game levels
« on: September 14, 2011, 02:35:33 pm »
As I said in the elimination thread before, I'd like to design levels. I'd like to do easy to medium levels so I can beat them myself. Kind of terrain: different types. Could you include a texture editor too to create the textures for it? If not, then the basic indoor and outdoor style would be good enough.

I don't really have a texture designer, but you can't see textures in the level editor anyways.  I always use paint, and a lot of people use CalcGS as well.  I'll tell you what textures you can do (they will be ones that you do for your levels), and they will be 3-level grayscale, 32x32 each.

Also, since you requested several different terrains, I'll have you do Forest, Ice and Desert.  My goal is 7 levels per terrain, so don't overwork yourself if you don't think you can do them all (and you can always mix em' up :D).  With that said, I'll get the level editor for you as soon as I can.

Elimination Developers / Designing Game Levels
« on: September 14, 2011, 01:35:22 pm »
Although I've made sure that I can finish Elimination by myself, I am always open to people contributing levels if they want to.  I do have the tools you need, but you'll need to read below about what you need to do:

1. Download the attachment "Level Designing" and take a look.  Let me know what levels you would like to work on.  Terrains and how hard the level should be are listed.
2. I will put a customized level editor in this folder for you, depending on the type of terrain you wanted.
3. From this point, designing the levels is relatively straight forward, though you can always ask for help.  Just remember to left-click to place an object, and right-click on the object to remove it.
4. After you export the level(s), create a post on this topic and attach the "levels.inc" file that was generated from the level editor.  With my thanks, I will take it from there to place the levels into the game.

Miscellaneous / Re: Ideas for older boys for Operation Christmas Child?
« on: September 13, 2011, 11:36:23 pm »
A baseball bat would be a good choice for the non-nerds, maybe.

Too big.  Operation Christmas Child is about giving gifts that will fit inside of shoeboxes, and these shoeboxes go to outside countries such as Bolivia and Russia.

Wonderful ideas, but I'm trying to leave electronics out unless I have no other choice

ASM / Re: Sprite Rendering
« on: September 13, 2011, 11:33:48 pm »
I would recommend that you use a different register for the Y coordinate if you can...and with a little bit of tweaking and help it can be done.  Register B is often used as a loop counter in sprite routines.

Miscellaneous / Ideas for older boys for Operation Christmas Child?
« on: September 13, 2011, 11:29:06 pm »
It's hard for me to get Operation Christmas Child presents for 10-14 year old boys, because most of what I can think of is expensive.  Can anyone suggest ideas that are cheap, yet items that 10-14 year old boys would enjoy?

And please, be serious.

EDIT: While electronics are nice, I'm wondering about non-electronic gifts

News / Re: Omnimaga Rules Update
« on: September 12, 2011, 11:00:01 pm »
Personally, I don't mind this new rule, as long as we're still allowed to voice our opinions calmly and positively towards how a coder should (in the mind of the person telling what they thinks) go about programming and if they should ask for others to optimize.  Barring the talk of this sort completely will ensure that coders never will hear alternatives of how to develop software and how to ask for help in more constructive ways, sealing the stream of the learning process from one of it's tributary sources.

Agreed, we're just trying to make sure that people don't let their opinion interfere with people trying to learn/have fun or those wanting to help said people.  It happened before with programming languages used, amonst other things.  In all these cases and more, voicing an opinion is one thing, but trying to enforce it is another.

News / Omnimaga Rules Update
« on: September 12, 2011, 06:41:58 pm »
We've updated rule #2 of what constitutes inappropriate content and actions on our website and/or IRC:

Quote
Negative/rude/destructive comments towards someone's project or program based on file size, amount of sub-programs, programming language/libraries used or coding methods in an attempt to discourage the author of the said program. Criticism should be intended to make the person's program better in its current form.

Perhaps some people like to write code and ask other people to optimize it for them.  Other people may enjoy write their own code and take all the credit for themselves, without having any help from anyone despite people begging to help.  Still others might like to write a program by taking portions of everyone's code from Axe and such, without using any code of their own (crediting the people, of course).  Whatever the case, discouraging this kind of thing is as bad as flaming about what programming language to use.  So we ask that if someone wants to code their own way, let them do so.

On a related note, we at Omnimaga do support friendly methods of encouraging people to "take it to the next level."  If someone likes to write code without any help, perhaps we could encourage them to ask for help at least once.  Or if someone likes to code by using code (with permission) from everyone else, we could encourage writing at least one routine.

Elimination / Re: Elimination: A New FPS

HOWEVER, if you're "bored" and want something to work on, you're welcome to help me with designing levels or textures, or to test levels to see if they're too easy or too hard.  I will credit you, of course, and I'll give you the tools and instructions you need.
I'd like to test levels to see if they aren't too easy or to hard, and I could try some textures and level designing, but I can't promise they'll be good. I could also do some asm coding if you want, but only easy stuff becouse I'm still a beginner.

I'm good on the asm coding, but I'll give you levels to test!  Also, when I'm done moving this to "Our Projects," I'll give you the level designer with instructions.  Just to let you know, I use Wolfenstein 3d as an inspiration for levels, so that might help you and give you some ideas.

Okay, I'm going to add the rocket launcher!  But I don't know when it will be done, because it requires planning and new code.  Rockets will one-shot enemies except bosses, but they will damage you if you're too close, and they have an area of effect only slightly bigger than the shotgun's area of effect.  There's also no gurantee that I can make rockets hit walls instead of going through them.

Also, at what point was I advocating the appearance of naked catgirls in a game that will most likely be played in school with teachers right next to them? I may be strange, but I'm not idiotic. Besides, nuny'all know how catgirls get.
They'd prolly rape the monsters into defeat. I am not kidding. Incubi are afraid of catgirls.
That said, incubi tend to be pretty cool people. Succubi are ok too. Just don't get either of them aroused. They lose all control.

Don't worry, nobody said that you were suggesting that kind of thing.  I certainly didn't think you were.

If it's a RAM page issue, the new TI-Boy should work. If it doesn't, then maybe Gemini wanted you to archive your other progs before running it.

Lots of people complained about Gemini requiring 23 KB of RAM, because that was a problem for everyone.  Elimination takes care of that by using one of the extra RAM pages, thus lowering the requirement to 9 KB.  Unfortunately, since the game has lots of different textures and levels that need to be decompressed, I probably can't make it less than 9 KB.

Lol, methinks catgirl launcher is a fun idea, but programming a new ai for it all? Not sure if it'd be worth it. Maybe if it was something that did a freeze-frame and a catgirl animation would be simpler to program.

Freeze-frame was actually what I had in mind.  Catgirl is low on my priorities, though--and it would be an easter egg or cheat rather than a gameplay mechanic ;)  (You'd be surprised, however, what I have in mind for secret levels)

Please, keep it G-Rated, k? (Or at max, PG) I hope there's nothing naughty or obscene because of this catgirl thing. Good idea, tho.

I have prided myself with avoiding that kind of thing, so IF there was a catgirl, it would be clean.  More funny than inappropriate.

The originial Gemini didn't work on my calc, some memory problem, and does that mean that Elimination won't work either?

Can you elaborate?  For instance, the calculator you were using?

I have a TI-84 Plus BE, and TI-Boy also don't work on my calc, does that mean anything?

That doesn't ring any bells.  I know that Gemini doesn't work on the Nspire (and I'm fixing that for Elimination), but I don't know what would cause the game not to work on your calculator.
