Miscellaneous / Re: What is your avatar?
« on: October 15, 2010, 05:59:04 am »
cool dj

It's ok, tho, as it won't distort the page. If an avatar is like 30 MB large i may remove it, though, same if it slows down the board considerably.

it's ok, i doubt anyone's pic gets even close to 30mb. i mean my avatar which i just posted was originally 1019x1019, it was so big, i had to create a 300 square copy and repost it. the size of the original file? 677KB. png file by the way. however ive noticed that JPEGs take up Heaps of space compared to png, yet they don't have any advantages (except for metadata tags). they have a disadvantage: they can't have any transparent pixels

my old one was a clever merge of 2 pictures:
1. picture of a solar system, but it wasn't square originally so i used powerpoint and added a black square autoshape behind it, aligned to center and middle and saved as picture
2. picture of me (an old one) cropped so that the head was showing only, removed background using Paint.NET (very good free photo editing tool).
3. once i had both pictures, i put them on powerpoint and aligned them to each other, resized the picture of me, but found it didn't really work.
4. Back in paint.NET i edited the pic of me so that it was a bit transparent, and also added a second layer that was a gradient with white on the right side and transparent on the left side. (cant remember some other details)
5. put all the layers together and that's the pic that i had.
pic as an attachment coming soon
6. after the health bars scandal, i thought it was too personal, so i put the expo logo on as a temporary measure. after the expo ends (end of this month) ill consider changing it once again.

PS also i should note that this was originally for my windows live/messenger account, as previously i had a pic of the solar system and wanted to spice it up. i liked the result so much that i put it on other stuff too, such as Omnimaga and my own website.

Civilization V came out a while ago (21 sep for US, 24 sep for the rest), anyone tried it?
I think it is a good improvement, and much more realistic!!! Lots of things have been simplified too. I like where you can just view the game conditions (difficulty, type of map, length of game) through circles when you bring up the game menu.
(hopefully i can have a screenshot of this)

We're heading off topic (well kind of, because it's still about China) I thought i should post a bit about my trip to China, since I didn't say much, so ill put it here:
China in General
   1. China has a LOT of people. More details: Well I went to Shanghai for the whole time
   2. Most people speak Chinese and can't speak English. Also lots speak Shanghai Dialect.
   3. Street signs are in BOTH English and Chinese. E.g.: 东兰路 -> Donglan Rd
   4. Also I don't think there are any 'streets' (St), mostly roads (Rd)
World Expo
   1. Each country has its own building, called a Pavilion. Well the size depends on a few factors, such as if your country can afford a big separate pavilion, or have to go into a joint pavilion with several countries. For an idea here's a pic of the China Pavilion (at nighttime with lights on: http://images.china.cn/images1/200712/416040.jpg
   2. Talking about lights, lots of pavilions have night lights on their pictures. However, China and the UK in real life, well only a small amount of light were actually working.

isn't eSATA nearly the same as SATA, just a bit more features for eSATA? I know they share the same port or something.

Miscellaneous / Re: How are those "versions" of programms numbered?
« on: October 12, 2010, 02:21:00 am »
even though now it's a bit better EDIT: maybe not, it's still confusing with all the 9860 versions:
fx-9860G, fx-9860G SD, fx-9860G Slim, fx-9860GII, fx-9860GII SD,
SD means SD card
slim is a special version that can be folded in half
gii new version technology (but still can be hacked into the original 9860)

fx-9750GII, fx-7400GII these are just remade versions of the originals but with GII technology

And again there are french versions that have completely different names.

ooh i've just seen something.. there's the fx-CG series to be launched next year. Looks like it's the Prizm and again, more random names...
different countries different names
fx-CG10 (North America), fx-CG20

This is great, just like the fake news on ticalc.org, what a great article and a great win!!!

True most of them are completely different, and several names!
French versions: 9750 - Graph 30,35,fx-8930GT;
9850,9950 - Graph 60,65,CFX-9930GT,9940,9960;
9970 - Graph 80
That would be so confusing to work out.
At least program version numbers are in order...

Yeah, calc naming is pretty random too. Casio calcs: the first ones were:
1.  fx-7000G, fx-6000G, fx-6500G, fx-7200G, fx-7500G, fx-8000G, fx-8500G.
2.  Then newer ones (but still old): fx-7700G, fx-7700GB, fx-8700G, fx-8700GB
3.  fx-7700GE, fx-9700GE, fx-9800G, fx-9900G
4.  then 7400 series (7400 and variations)
5.  The 9850 (or 9x50) series (9850, 9750, 9950, 9970)
This is confusing because even though there are games that say are for the 9x50 series, this includes the 9970.
6.  Finally the current calc FX-9860 (and different versions such as FX-9860GII)
As you can see there are random numbers everywhere

If you want to put version numbers for your own programs, I have my personal opinion but the choice is yours.
I like to start from 0.1 and on the way not to have the numbers any more complex than this: x.x.x E.g.: 0.8.3
however if it is a big project then i can use more complex version numbers
But as I say, it's your choice, and basically version numbers are used to put them in order.

also relating to your question above...
V0.13B.54    0.13 version with a beta (or B) 0.54
V3.15A.12:   3.15 version with alpha (or A) 0.12
V1.1.4C.2443: 1.1.4version C? .2443
In my opinion the letters in the middle make it confusing, an example like v0.13.2.54 (2 representing B) or v3.15.1.12 might be better.

V0.2A 0.2 alpha
V1.3B 1.3 beta
These are ok

Overall, they are just used to classify big or small changes in the program.

[TI-nspire OSes are confusing too Eg:
1.1 [noncas] is actually 1.1.9253
2.1 is actually 2.1.0.631
