Gaming Discussion / Re: Your best video game pickups.
« on: August 17, 2013, 12:19:43 pm »
At this rate I am never gonna be able to play all of my ps2 games. I bought so many of them in such a short timespan that I never got to playing all of them. They are just so friggin cheap these days even complete in box. I also saw Final fantasy X for €10, but sadly I ran out of cash, so I did not get it.

As I said: Now is the time to stack up on PS2 games since nobody seems to care about them. Prices for wii games are dropping too, but they are still about €10-€15 on flea markets. I bet that is gonna come down as more and more people are going to switch to wiiU.

@Eiyeron, I just visit the big ones in cities. People always have some games and computer hardware there. There will also be resellers with a stack of games at either market value or overpriced. They don't have a lot of good games since collectors have been picking out the good ones. They are left with sports games and mediocre games. I managed to get gremlins 2 and pilotwings. People don't seem to realize that those are actually great games.

@DJ O That happens. It was in a rental box, so people might not have spotted it. The seller did not know what he had either. He said he had more nes games, but he sold them already. I arrived at 10.30 and the event started at 9. Probably locals. Those darn locals always get the good stuff :P

I just got back from a large indoor fleamarket. It was a 30 minute drive and the parking was expensive, but in the end it was worth it. I got myself quite a lot of cool stuff.

NES:
€2 Ninja gaiden. It's called Shadow Warrior in europe. It was in a rental box, but for €2 you can't really complain about that. The game itself is in really nice condition.
€5 Gremlins 2. Really cool game. I played it a bit and so far I enjoyed it. The 3d environment is kind of refreshing after having played so many platformers.

SNES:
€5 Pilotwings. Price is about right I guess. Got it from the same reseller I got Gremlins 2 from.

PS2:
€1,50 Dead or Alive 2. I did not have any fighting games for the ps2 and for €1,50 you can't really pass on a game like this.

Gamecube:
€10 Controller. My other GC controller was worn down. The thumbstick did not have texture on it anymore and the rubber started to come off.

Wii:
€10 Super Smash Bros. Brawl. I played this game at launchdate over at a friends. The controls are a bit laggy and the AI is not very smart, but that might just be the difficulty settings. I never owned a game from the smash bros series, so I am glad I finally got it for a reasonable price in box, with manual. It even has the little nintendo star points card with the code unscratched. I think I am gonna leave it that way.

PC:
€2 Half Life 2. I'm probably gonna give this to my yougner brother. He is more into FPS than I am.
€1 2 x 512Mb DDR2 ram. For repairs and upgrades.
€1 Enterprise grade keyboard. Not sure if mechanical. It's nice and clicky. Always wanted one of these. The keys are still a little bit heavy. Still: just €1 for a keyboard is not a bad deal in any way. This one still has all the letters visible on it whereas my previous one did not. I also like that this is a wired keyboard. My wireless one ran out of batteries at the worst moments.

And I almost bought a TI83+ for €1, but a woman just got there 5 seconds earlier and she got the deal :P I also saw a sega kids gear (newer model gamegear) It missed both battery covers so I passed on it at first, but then when I decided to get it anyway it was sold already. Whoever it was: He caught me slipping on something. There was a €25 GBA SP backlit model. It was pink and it had stickers and sticker residue on it. I really wanted a backlit SP, but that is way overpriced, so I passed on it.

Especially since not a lot of people have switched to the new color SE yet.

I am a complete noob with propeller chip, but I managed to combine two programs: the TV terminal library and the Serial library. I made a serial terminal :) At the moment it is one way. I have not hooked up a keyboard to the propeller yet.

Casio Calculators / Re: CFX-9850GB plus - Broken screen
« on: August 12, 2013, 03:41:59 pm »
Ouch, what's the state of the screen now? From what it sounds, desoldering did nothing to make it better (might have made the screen even worse!)

Btw I have the exact model Casio CFX-9850GB+ (white version).
One of my few graphing calculators.
Ribbon is destroyed. Screen entirely dead.

It sucks how they did it, preventing you from fixing the calc. Otherwise with a normal screen connector apparently it's really easy to fix. Is it true that sometimes it's just because the connection is dirty?
The connection cannot be dirty because the ribbon cable is soldered directly to the board, but the solder can dry a bit and crack thus making a bad connection.

So when you get a calc and see there are horizontal lines missing on the screen: it's not an easy fix. It is impossible to service with a normal soldering iron. Do not attempt to fix it because it will definitely brick your calculator.

Is there v-sync available for basic programs on the prime or would you have to write assembly code to achieve that?

That is because it drains your batteries slower when it is clocked lower.

http://ez8tut.sourceforge.net/highlighter.php/
I wrote a syntax highlighter for eZ8 syntax. It exports to html and BB forumcode. Example:
include "ez8.inc"

vector reset = 1000h
org 1000h

main:
di         ;Disable interrupts as we won't be using them
srp #00h      ;Set working registers base address (Working registers are R0-R15)
ldx SPH,#00h      ;Set stack pointer base address
   ldx SPL,#FFh      ;(the stack is 00ffh - 0000h so 256 bytes large)

ldx PAADDR, #01h   ;Access the data direction subregister
ldx PACTL,#00h      ;Set data direction of port B to all outputs. 0 = output, 1 = input
ld  R4,   #77h      ;Load register R0 with EEh. This will be our rotated value.
brk         ;Breakpoint. The debugger will stop the cpu here.Press the go button to
            ;continue execution.
loop:
ldx PAOUT, R4      ;Load the output register of port B with the value of our counter.
rr R4         ;Increase our counter by 1.
call delay      ;Call our delay function.
jp loop         ;Jump back to loop
delay:

ld R0,#0Fh      ;Load value 0FFFh in the 16 bit register pair RR0 (consists of R0 and R1)
   ld R1,#FFh
outer:
ld R2,#FFh      ;Load value 0FFh in 8 bit register R2

   djnz R2,$      ;Decrease
   decw RR0
jp nz, outer      ;While the register pair has not reached 0 (nz) yet jump back to outer
   ret         ;Return from routine

There is a bug in omnimaga's stylesheet that causes the preformatted text to look different from normal pre tags apparently since this should format right.

Other Calculators / Re: Your calculator collection
« on: August 11, 2013, 05:33:29 am »
Added a couple of calculators to the collection:
Two cfx 9850. The first one was broken, so I bought another one which works fine.
A pocket organizer by commodoor (I think it is made by Sharp, but it is rebranded for the Dutch market.) There is probably an issue with the capacitors because the little buzzer does not make a lot of sound. You can barely hear it. I prefer my psion.

Can someone please come up with something truly revolutionary? The last decade we have just been inproving on old concepts and combining them to make mediocre products.

As I said: it boils down to this:
People want to feel fucking sophisticated when they bring over their new iPad to Starbucks.

People buy tablets because
* They boot up faster than laptops or desktop PC's. People always leave their tablet on standby, so it starts up in an instant.
* Tablets can be a lot cheaper and lighter than laptops.
* To play candy crush
* To feel fucking sophisticated

There is no excuse for preferring a tablet over a netbook though.
