It's not layered if changing the contrast makes it orange I think. Otherwise it would turn brownish black I assume.

Indeed. I have not seen any 4 bits lcd drivers yet though. Those are mainly used on those older non backlit screens as found on the casio CFX-9850GC I think. (And I think that's not even 4 bits)

I just picked up 5 games for €2,50 each. Some are in pretty rough shape, but they play well.

Not in box, but still nice finds. (Oh who am I kidding, these are all mediocre. The best games on the stack are donkey kong and rayman and they are not in the best condition) The seller put up an ad with a picture showing all kinds of pokémon games, mario 64 ds, yoshi's island etc.  All games in the ad were €2,50. Too bad all of the good games were picked out already. I wished I saw this ad earlier

I made a 2 bit sprite using the basic color palette. It has 2 pixel wide pixels. The sprite is 11x24 and 22x24 stretched.

I also do things like chiprock using all sorts of different sounds like FM, c64 and nes and crushed samples, but usually I don't use actual hardware because it's so much easier to get a big sound using modern software with the same set of limitations as the old systems. I did some stuff on the c64 using cybertracker, but it just takes so long and the fact that the c64 does not have 4 arrow keys makes it very sluggish because you have to do all sorts of weird button combinations to make the cursor move.
