Axe / Re: How to use the link port
« on: February 12, 2013, 09:15:37 am »
Oh I already figured out how to pull it off. I just use a two wire interface with one clock and one data line. The clock line should be controlled by the host device. When the host would like to send something it just does that. When the device wants to send something to the host it has to wait for the host to poll the device. It's not the most efficient, but it is stable and reliable.

I wonder if anyone has been able to reverse engineer the graphics driver of the 84+. If so I could implement that in hardware and modify it a bit so it can drive a different kind of lcd. That would be a nice fpga project. I have no fpga boards, so this goes in the ideas bin for now.

Sweet! I want to hack my trusty 84+ as well, but it will involve some pretty technical stuff. I want to embed my soundchip in it for example. The prototype is rather large, so I need to do some redesigning and use smaller parts. ....
Have you ever thought about using an FPGA to (try) put most of your hardware inside a smaller footprint? I'm afraid you would need to learn yet another language (hardware) VHDL/VERILOG (Hardware description language).  But then again, dutch people normally speak at least a half-dozen languages  ;), so it may be a worthwhile effort for guys that like hardware modding...
Here is an example:
. Special attention to (in description) :
"It is noteworthy that inside the FPGA there is no soft core micro or CPU, just hardware implemented in VHDL. The hardware consists of a RS232 UART for rx/tx, a SID chip, a 16KB FIFO buffer and some glue logic / state machines to make it all tick along."

I know what fpga's are, but those are quite expensive compared to a $3 atmega328 microcontroller and you need a PROM to store the hardware configuration in.

Yeah it's pretty much the same for every device. Remove the reflector and put a diffuser with a light source behind the screen. How you're gonna fit it is different with every device. Maybe a frontlight is easier.

I would also like to have a backlit calc, but I will probably do some more backlight mods on other devices before screwing around with my first 84+'s screen.

I made a cable that allows me to connect my pc via the printer port to the c64's floppy drive's serial. Now I can use physical floppies with my winvice emulator. So I can edit, write and read files from them. It's a good way to back up old homebrew software or my SID music files. It's also great for pirating games (and playing new releases such as canabalt64 and vvvvvv64 )

I usually look for weird cables in the local thriftshops :P I buy cables I like such as 2,5mm jack, 5pin din, 8pin din. The stuff you cannot get easily in stores anymore. I got some 2,5mm cables that actually fit the calc.

Cool stuff. I'd love to see more games from TI for the calculator.

And into refining those lines. Go over them with a black pencil or marker.

The drums are a tad too loud, but you get the idea.
I'm now remixing this.

Offtopic: I got 8 systems and a commodore 64 with a diskdrive to fit under my tv. Most of them are top loaders except for the nes and (big) ps2, so no stacking here. I cannot fit more stuff underneath the tv (and have easy access to it.)

I want to play the wiiU at a friends first, but I don't know people who own one. I will not hook it up to my beloved CRT tv because... you guess.
Just gonna wait until there are some cool metroid games on the system. Other M 2 ft portal (in which mother brain is transferred to a potato)
