They probably won't say anything about the teacher not understanding the menus. My guess is that they will say they no longer have OS 1.3, because the newer OS's have upgrades that prevent downloading, thereby dodging your question completely. Maybe try and say you know you can't downgrade, and how should you solve this problem?

No. I could play the piano part, but I don't know any cellists. I use Finale Allegro for writing and playback.
