THE POST 13570475 QuoteBegin-art_of_camelot+17 Dec, 2007, 23:20 --> QUOTE (art_of_camelot @ 17 Dec, 2007, 23:20) | I know this is slightly offtopic but I was reading through alot of the older posts here. Ranman I didn't realize you had a one year old son and another child as well. Between family and work I don't know how you manage to work on this project as much as you do. That is very inspiring. I can understand why you want to retire from the ti community. |
Thanks art_of_camelot -- I really appreciate that! There have been a few times where I thought about abandoning the project due to the sheer amount of work and level of detail this game has to offer. But... I did not want to throw so much of my invested time away -- believe me, it has been a lot of time too! :gah: So, I have been sacrificing lots of sleep to get this game out the door sooner rather than later. Looks like beta testing will begin before the end of the year!

THE POST 13570428 QuoteBegin-grendel+14 Dec, 2007, 12:15 --> QUOTE (grendel @ 14 Dec, 2007, 12:15) | Funny you should mention that. I started a project a while back based on Ultima III, but nothing like what Ranman is doing. The idea was a full revision of the game, to bring it more in line with console fantasy role-playing. (like Dragon Quest) I've considered trying to work something out on a TI platform, depending on how my current projects go. More or less, it would be a recreation of the NES version by FCI. |
I have posted this link before, but I thought I would post it again since grendel brought up the subject of Ultima III. Anyway... Check it out... Ultima III on GBC

THE POST 13568909 Very nice looking and very fast tile engine! I like the memory savings too -- this will lend more memory for story development. In my opinion, the story line is more important than visual appearance. Smooth scrolling is more of an "eye candy" effect. If you have plenty of memory available, then go for the eye candy. Good job Liazon! :king:

THE POST 13567508 QuoteBegin-DJ Omnimaga+15 Dec, 2007, 18:18 --> QUOTE (DJ Omnimaga @ 15 Dec, 2007, 18:18) | Is there Subway and McDonald's restaurants in Ultima V? |
 Nope, there are only private owned taverns in Britannia. But since you asked... Here are the names of the taverns along with their respective owners: - The Honest Meal (Sam) - The Wayfarer Tavern (Tika) - The Sword and Keg (Nicole) - The Slaughtered Lamb ( Duclas) - The Humble Palate (Felicity) - The Blue Boar Tavern (Jaymes) - The Cat's Lair (Dr. Cat) - The Fallen Virgin (Nikki) - The Folley Tap (Rob)

THE POST 13567082 Are you feeling hungry?
Every member in your party will eat 1 food item at 8am and again at 8pm. If you have a full compliment of 6 members in your party, you will go through 12 pieces of food per day. If you run out of food, then for each move you will lose 1 Hit Point per party member -- Ouch! If you are far away from a town, you may not make it. So pay close attention.
So... you see... Food is very critical in Ultima V. How do you get food you might ask.
- Food may be left behind as booty (treasure) from a combat kill.
- Food can be found in certain places.
- Food can be created using the "In Xen Mani" spell.
- Food and drinks (alcohol) can be purchased at the local Pub shops. This type food and drink is consumed immediately and cannot be taken on your travels. Watch out... too much alcohol will result in drunken and uncontrollable movements.
- Food rations may also be purchase at the local Pubs. This type of food is used while journeying throughout the world maps.
- Out of money but still need food? Well... you have the option of stealing it from someone's garden. It may not require money, but this will reduce your Virtue Points. Sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do to get by. Pray for forgiveness at the shrines to regain your Virtue Points.
- You steal food from someone's plate (as previous stated... stealing is a virtue hit)
- You steal wine from a wine cask (as previous stated... stealing is a virtue hit)

|
o.o o.o o.o :knight: QuoteBegin-art_of_camelot+14 Dec, 2007, 11:43 --> QUOTE (art_of_camelot @ 14 Dec, 2007, 11:43) | I was looking foward to seeing what you were going to do next after this, so I hope you don't retire. ^_^ You also have alot of programming expirence and could help alot of people out that have questions. Anyhow, I hope you stick around after you complete this.
|
Well... I will still hang around of course. I will not be able to undertake any large projects. But, I might do some quickies like Astrosmash. I will definitely help with programming questions as time permits. QuoteBegin-grendel+14 Dec, 2007, 12:15 --> QUOTE (grendel @ 14 Dec, 2007, 12:15) | I'm not sure what Ranman would think of the idea, though. I suspect he likes Ultima just the way it is, and would probably raise an eyebrow at the thought of me trying to "Japan it up" a bit.

THE POST 13563413 QuoteBegin-DJ Omnimaga+12 Dec, 2007, 21:50 --> QUOTE (DJ Omnimaga @ 12 Dec, 2007, 21:50) | now that you keep on the subject I wonder if that means that Ranman is plannign a release exactly the DAY of the 20th anniversary! O_O |
The same year is good enough for me. It does seem very coincidental though.
No conspiracy here. I just need to hurry up so I can retire!

THE POST 13560541 Yeah... As triplea just pointed out... using masked sprites will increase the memory required by the sprite by 50%.
That is one reason I opted to not use masked sprites in UV. The other 2 reasons are: the original does not use masked sprites, and it would not have a profound effect on the visual experience of the game (UV moves a full tile at a time).
If your character sprites move a pixel at a time rather than by a full tile at a time, then masked sprites for them might be a good idea. Else, you would have to redraw the entire screen everytime you move.

THE POST 13559820 QuoteBegin-art_of_camelot+10 Dec, 2007, 12:12 --> QUOTE (art_of_camelot @ 10 Dec, 2007, 12:12) | The more I hear about this game the more impressed I am by the original devlopement team. This really is gonna be great! How long have you been working on this massive project Ranman? |
That is one of the biggest reasons I decided to remake this game -- the level of interaction was way ahead of its time. It was truely a ground breaking game; the level of detail is astounding. I hope people that try this game will experience the same feeling I did nearly 20 years ago. I couldn't wait to get home from school to immerse myself in the worlds of Ultima. I have been working on Ultima V off & on for just over 3 years now. o.o This post has been edited by Ranman on 10 Dec, 2007, 16:54

THE POST 13559050 Sleeping is a good way to heal your party. In Ultima V there are many ways to sleep. - Use the 'Holeup' command on a world map to set up a camp. This is a free method to heal your party but involves some risk. You will be susceptible to attack by roaming enemies. You have the option to select a player to stand watch. So, if you are attacked, the player standing watch can wake the sleeping party members. If you choose not to set a watch and you are attacked, then your party may or may not wake up during the attack. - Use the 'Holeup' command in a town while your party is lying in a vacant bed. This is a free method to heal your party; but watch out... if the owner of bed decides to go to sleep, you will be thrown out of bed. However, you will not be attacked. - Use the 'Holeup' command while on a frigate. This is a free method to heal your party and make repairs to your ship. Again... you are susceptible to attack by roaming sea creatures. (not implemented yet) - You may also elect to purchase a room for the night at the local Inn. It will cost a few bits of gold; but you will have a comfortable night's rest without fear of attack or getting thrown out of bed. As I have said before... Sleeping is critical to winning Ultima V. "How is that?" you might ask... That is for you to find out. This post has been edited by Ranman on 10 Dec, 2007, 9:31
