THE POST 7690546 QuoteBegin-Spellshaper+Jul 25 2006, 06:56 AM --> QUOTE (Spellshaper @ Jul 25 2006, 06:56 AM) | why are trolls interested in money anyways? :: They should be more after blood and gore. |
Trolls can be somewhat civilized! And they love gold and weapons. If you are victorious in battle with trolls, you will get some nice bounty!

THE POST 7689472 Be careful crossing bridges... There could be trolls lurking around. If you are caught, the trolls will demand a toll. If you do not pay the toll... Well... someone is gonna get a butt whoopin'. Hopefully it will not be you! B) Thanks for the comments guys!

THE POST 7610623 QuoteBegin-xlibman+Jul 22 2006, 06:35 PM --> QUOTE (xlibman @ Jul 22 2006, 06:35 PM) | wow cool, do you have all attacks implemented yet? I dunno if i asked yet but was there some kind of magic animations in the original ultima V? |
Attacks are partially implemented along with the enemy AI. When magic is used during combat in the original Ultima V, the screen inverts in stages (see a screenshot of moongate travel) along with an eerie sound. And if it is a projectile (like the Magic Missile), then you will also see the projectile animation. BTW: nice avatar xlibman. "The enemy begins to fight back" "They are ganging up on me. RUN!"

THE POST 7575790 Thanks for asking. I would say that combat is 50% complete. Once combat is complete... the only thing that remains is tidying up a lot of little things. I guess I should bump my overall progress to 80%.

QuoteBegin-Athlor+Jul 15 2006, 07:50 AM--> QUOTE (Athlor @ Jul 15 2006, 07:50 AM) | One of my Cybikos work. The other keeps disconnecting itself from it's batteries. Xlibman, you are not the only one. A lot of people say they don't like that slanted perspective. I don't mind it myself but, I think that's why it was never popular. Ultima 7 used 32x32 versions of this perspective. Ultima 8 then went to a real isometric perspective. Lastly, Ultima 9 went to regular 3D. |
Back in the 80's, I played Ultima I through V. They all had the "classic" bird's eye view, non-slanted tiles. Then about 5 years later I watched and helped one of my Navy buddies play Ultima VII. The slanted tiles were neat looking, but I still missed the old classic look.

QuoteBegin-Athlor+Jul 15 2006, 07:39 AM--> QUOTE (Athlor @ Jul 15 2006, 07:39 AM) | You may have noticed the dungeon pics have no line-of-sight code. That will be the hardest part, I think. The source even had a pregenerated array in c. I haven't a clue yet how to implementing it as yet. I'm also not sure I have the exact sequence of combat down right. I'm going to use animget to study it better. I added the wiggling when struck code part in last night. It's technically playable but not really right yet. |
I use a pregenerated array in C to accomplish the LOS algorithm. It is so much faster than actually trying to calculate it. I had to have an intermediate tile grid of 17x17 tiles, because Ultima V has light sources, which really complicated the LOS algorithm. Would you like some help implementing it?
I also need to add the "wiggling" algorithm for the Tremor spell among other things.
What exactly is "animget"?
Keep up the great work Athlor!

Do I hear an Ultima revival coming on? This is great news. Athlor, do you ever visit Dino's webpage?

THE POST 7174115 QuoteBegin-Athlor+Jul 12 2006, 08:09 AM --> QUOTE (Athlor @ Jul 12 2006, 08:09 AM) | I do like the lighter but remember guys these are inverted planes. The lighter examples could potentially look still better with a recolored tileset. AnYwAyZ, I'm glad I mentioned this. I just wasn't sure if you considered the idea. |
You are right Athlor!
I may play around with recoloring the tileset after the initial release. The tile inversion was something I already had implemented to initiate a magic spell, moongate trave, and a weapon hit detection.

Me too But my second favorite is the white background setting. I do not care for either of the gray backgrounds.

THE POST 7135618 QuoteBegin-Athlor+Jul 11 2006, 07:46 AM --> QUOTE (Athlor @ Jul 11 2006, 07:46 AM) | I love RPG's that give you a larger range of personalization. I like hidden weapons too, like finishing a game and finding out if you'd found this certain sword you life would have been easier. |
Yeah, that is a neat thing about the Ultimas. If I knew what I know now about Ultima V, I could have played it entirely different. I wasn't too smart back then. QuoteBegin --> QUOTE | I've been wondering about the game's darkness though. Did you plan this or is it because of the look of the regular versions. I seen an old Mac monochrome version and it made me realize not all Ultima versions were dark colored. Black is the default color of a crt but a grayscale lcd's default color is white. Wouldn't that also mean it might consume more power being so dark? |
My original plans were to make it look as close to the PC/Apple/Commodore versions as possible. They are all dark backgrounds. It will consume a little more battery power. But, I have thought about that too... I have a 2 screen inversion values that I can use to invert either or both video planes. So, with the press of a button, you can have this game look entirely different. Hmmm... Maybe I should post a screen shot of that?

--> QUOTE | Another thought. I stumbled upon the Nes version of U5 the other day. Did you know that it uses a quasi-isometric slanted tileset, like Ultima 6 & 7? I didn't know that until yesterday. |
I think I remember seeing that. But, in the NES version of U5, the story line was shortened quite a bit -- I guess they were reaching their memory limits. Also, in the NES version of U5, the tiles were alot brighter too.
