Miscellaneous / Word-Figures
« on: April 06, 2011, 03:45:54 am »
During a conversation about Synesthesia, I brought up the fact that every word has a figure to me, almost all of them are one connected line. I've already done a few words. Just thought I'd share :D

"Noise"

"Freyaday"

"Illuminating" [attached]

This concept is related to sound symbolism, which plays its part in stenography. :D

@Freyaday: I make connections faster with concepts than symbols, but yes, I could do that at least to some degree. And no, For( doesn't have an immediate color.

@Stefan Bauwens: Sometimes I don't even think about colors when I see numbers, but often I still do. Even so, if you ask me what color a number is, I can always tell you. And they're very specific shades for me. 7 is deep purple. Similar to Z, but darker. My favorite color is 76.

It's a visual representation of the sound of "Freyaday." Every word has one, though they're not as consistent as my numbers/colors. :P

The noise is just from the wonderful qualities of MSPaint and jpeg compression.

Even when it doesn't hurt, saying "Ow" is a psychological reflex. It's like when someone pretends to hit you in the face and you flinch. Same idea.

Unfortunately I don't have syntax highlighting :P That would be awesome though!

Also, I haven't used hex long enough to make an immediate connection between hexadecimal values and decimal values, so I would only make a connection after doing the conversion.

Well, according to my synesthesia, you look like this:

I don't know if that would be synesthesia or not. As for saying "Ow" that's just a psychological reflex. And I lol'd about the For( loops :)

You may have a weak form of synesthesia. The biggest question is this: how consistent are the colors that you think of?

There are lots of differences in the way connections are made, too. For example, Some people see individual digits as different colors. I see the whole number as one color. 4927 is a specific shade of turquoise for me; it is also the answer to the math problem in the movie Matilda. I haven't seen that movie in at least 7 years. the only reason I remember that number is because I thought it was an interesting color. Words sometimes have color for me, but more often it's the individual letters. I have other connections, too, such as personalities/textures/images that go with some specific numbers/letters, too.

As long as it's clear to me that you are referencing the number four, I'll make the connection. But something like saying "What is the color for this?" would probably not trigger it.

Actually, the trick to reading the names of colors printed in another color is to focus on only one letter in each color name instead of the whole word, so no it doesn't really mess me up that much :P When I hear the word "four" I make a connection only if I make the conceptual connection with the number 4. If I just hear "for" or "fore" somewhere and contextually my brain doesn't make the connection with the number, then the connection with the color won't be made either.

The Axe Parser Project / Re: Features Wishlist

It's much easier to just draw two sprites in axe than to write a new set of wrapping sprite display routines in ASM.

Thanks! I was originally going to use Axe, but I'm considering at least attempting them in ASM first.

Also, I realized that I explained part of Mummy wrong. The mummy makes up to two moves, always prioritizing horizontal movement before vertical.

If you've ever had a dream in which there was a sign or a banner or anything that had words on it, I guarantee you that the letters on it were not actually symbols, and were instead just random meaningless blobs (It's true, believe me. I can explain why this happens later). Even so, you still knew what they said, because you UNDERSTOOD what they said. You didn't see the words, you just understood the concept. It's the same idea here where you don't see the colors, you just understand that the number and color are connected.

Now to directly address your questions (in order):
-Closer to the unshakable feeling.
-Personally, no. 4/four/IV all trigger the same color, but for some people that is not true. It depends if your brain triggers based solely on symbol recognition, or if it's based on symbols and number concepts. I have the latter, so they all trigger the same color, but 4 triggers it more often than the other ones, because that's the main symbol that holds the connection.
-The current color of the symbol doesn't affect the color that your brain makes a connection with, so a red 4 would still trigger a connection to 'green'.
-Sure, anyone can force themselves to make a connection between a color and a number. You just can't force your immediate subconscious connection to be different.

Lol. That would be nice, wouldn't it? You don't actually SEE the colors, you understand the colors. Synesthesia occurs when your brain makes unnecessary connections between different senses. The thing that classifies it as synesthesia is that the connections always produce the same result.

That's true for me, too. And I can USUALLY do math without colors interfering, too...but sometimes it just kinda happens. :P
