Updates
With April 1st coming and going, I think it's time for an update! Rather than make a bad (and pretty prophetical) April Fools Joke, I decided to initiate and start the migration process! The migration process is still ongoing. However, the backups have been made, and the old server is now open for user backup - including SSH/SFTP/SCP! Log into old.withg.org with your withgusto username and password, and your files should be there if you want to make any of your own backups! Note that since the backup has already been created, any new or modified data on the server will be deleted! If you would like to work on anything within your account, please wait until the migration completes to do so! The old server will stay online until the end of April. After April 30th, the old server will be terminated. Hopefully by then the new server will be up! Thanks for your patience - we're getting there soon! 3

withgusto ZNC Migration Complete!
Thanks to everyone for their patience. We have now successfully migrated from our old server to this shiny new one!

withgusto ZNC Migration (3/18/16, 9 PM - 12 AM EDT)
EDIT: Important ZNC Form! As you may have heard, withgusto is undergoing a major downsizing to ensure viability in the future. As part of this plan, we are moving ZNC to a different, separate server to allow ZNC to operate independently of withgusto's main server, hopefully increasing the stability of both for times to come. What does this mean for you?
If you have any questions, comments, or concerns, feel free to ask away in this thread! Updates:

Bump! We are moving very soon - please fill out this IMPORTANT USAGE SURVEY by this Friday, 11:59 PM EDT! We'd like to gather feedback to plan ahead for the downsizing + migration! (If you need more time to fill this form out, let me know here or via PM.)
IMPORTANT USAGE SURVEY EDIT: This form is NOT for those who are just using ZNC. If you do not have a shell account, do NOT fill out this form! 6
Web Programming and Design / Re: withgusto's future« on: March 15, 2016, 01:04:08 am »If you want, you can probably drop irp.irc.omnimaga.org. Not all too many people use it (If you still have ZNC running then it would save you bandwidth for whoever is accessing omninet, just get them to use irp instead of another server).Nah, I don't mind. Memory usage for an IRCd isn't too bad, and yup ZNC is a big factor for that. And yeah, budget is really sucking these days. I know I've been pestering you about donations, but no worries - this is more or less caused by something that is completely unrelated and out of my control. I'll probably be able to recover from the "issue" in a few months, but for this one and next... I really can't afford the monthly bill anymore... 7

EDIT: Important Survey!
We are moving very soon - please fill out this IMPORTANT USAGE SURVEY by this Friday, 11:59 PM EDT! Introduction It has been a year since the last withgusto update. About a year or so ago, a massive DDoS attack took withgusto down. This caused a "strike" to occur with the VPS hosting provider, and I temporarily closed withgusto's doors - specifically, hid it behind Cloudflare. This allowed Cloudflare to temporarily take the hit and reduce the load on the VPS. However, this had the effect of also blocking SSH, which was a lifeline into withgusto. Without a doubt, this is probably what drained significant use of withgusto. Unfortunately, due to many commitments, I never got a chance to move withgusto. A year has passed, and withgusto is becoming increasingly difficult to maintain, both in terms of time and money. As such, regretfully, I must make the decision to wind down withgusto. Note that this is NOT a shutdown - but we are planning on significantly reducing resources. withgusto Downsizing The proposed plan:
Service plan (some already mentioned above):
Without a doubt, these are very tough cuts in service. The decision to cut these services was not taken lightly - however, in order for withgusto to continue (and not completely drop dead), we need to reduce these services and move to a lighter server. Currently, I pay $15/mo for the main withgusto server, $15 for the backup service, $25/year for the backup.withg server, and around $16/year for the domain. Total yearly = ~$400/year! With the new plan, I'm hoping to reduce this cost to something like this: $32/year for the main withgusto server, $15/year for the backup.withg/IRC/ZNC server, and around $16/year for the domain. Total yearly = ~$63/year... much more affordable! Conclusion All of this said, we still want your feedback! We don't want to move forward without hearing from you guys - if you don't like the things above, let us know and we'll try to accommodate! Since it has been a long time since we've had service, we want to hear from you in terms of how you will be using it. Migration is NOT happening yet! Once we have some feedback, we'll announce dates for migration. 8
Site Feedback and Questions / Re: Unnecessary IRC channels?« on: December 31, 2015, 12:22:00 am »
Hmmm... so realistically, if we really had to cull channels, we could probably cull #prizm (zero activity, nobody there at all) and #nspire-lua (I think there isn't too much discussion these days... but I may be wrong). Language channels are debatable... but I think removing channels isn't the big issue here!
More interestingly, I think we forgot to add back a feature ever since we did an upgrade on OmnomIRC - the "Show Extra Channels" option doesn't have an effect! The channels #IRP, #thebot, #nspire-lua, #prizm, and maybe others were part of that option - if you enabled the extra channels, those channels would show up. Otherwise, they would remain hidden. Moving forward, depending on how much Sorunome/Eeems want to develop this feature, we could have it so that you can pick which channels you'd want to see. In general, I think if there's some usage of the channels, we wouldn't go as far as to remove them - maybe just hide them. These channels don't detract from our main channel, and they definitely have their purpose in our community. EDIT: Hmm, they seem to work... maybe the default setting isn't set right? I could've sworn that it was off and I saw the extra channels... 9

Wow... well, this has driven me to actually start using KeePass2. I've been using KeePass2 in a few places, but I think I'll be using it a bit more often from now on!
(Someone remind me at the end of December to write a tutorial for KeePass2!) 10

If we're good on that, then pimath or I could go ahead and create it! 11
Community Contests / Re: Code Golf Contest #9« on: June 10, 2015, 11:59:29 pm »I disagree with blindly sticking to the 120-day rule; the point is to avoid people constantly bump old posts without adding anything substantive, displacing the active ones. Since the current challenge is stickied, abd the topics were already on the first (and only) page of the subboard, should it be a problem if I add something new to each discussion?Yes, but... at least from my perspective, it would seem that the old Code Golf Content #9 became active again, and for me caused confusion between this and the current #2 reboot contest... which one is the latest one? (#9 > #2, so #9 seems to be more recent, right?) And your necro in #7 causes even more confusion! Hopefully you can see where I'm coming from! Of course, this is not to discourage your contributions - indeed, better solutions after-the-fact are nice, and it does promote better, more efficient programming! If you want (and if @pimathbrainiac agrees), we can create a dedicated topic for post-code-golf discussion and solutions. (Topic title would be something like: "POST-MOTERM Code Golf - Discussion and Solutions", or something along those lines.) We can even sticky the new dedicated topic if it helps! Of course, the only condition for this is that you don't necro-post in those old topics (like this one) again... What do you guys think? 12

Re-did the binaries again, this time making it static so that no Visual C++ 2010 stuff is needed! With some tricks and whirls, got the file size to something significantly tiny! (478 KB vs 1093 KB - it can go down even lower without the 218 KB icon!)

This looked really tricky to compile (especially with the environment, since the paths are not necessarily correct). On Windows, this is a nightmare if you don't know what to get!
To remedy this, I built a little installer for you guys! Download here: ap_cs_project_win32.zip For those trying to build it, I actually used Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 to build this. It'll give strange errors at first (after all paths and such are set up correctly) - but all you have to do is move the variable declaration to the top (before any actual execution happens), and you should be good. @pimathbrainiac + @Eskmo: I'd be happy to give you guys what I have! Also, the installer assumes that the license is GPLv3. If it's NOT, please let me know (highlight me @alberthrocks) and I'll change it ASAP and update the source/binary accordingly. EDIT: I meant variable declaration only, no initialization. If you declare and initialize at the same time, e.g. int bla = somevalue;, split it up - put int bla; on top, and then where the old line used to be, put bla = somevalue;. Repeat for everything else! EDIT #2: The installer will also install the VC++ 2010 SP1 Redistributable (x86), if you don't have it installed already. 15

APRIL FOOLS! It looks like many people took it seriously... and actually added their name to the backup list!
Sorry for the terrible April fools joke - but in a sense, I feel like I sorta had to joke about it on April 1st to affirm that indeed, we are NOT going anywhere... even if we like to play elaborate pranks about it! In fact, it's quite the contrary! There a sentence in the original post that has negatives. Logically, if it's April 1st, the opposite is true - at least one of those sentences is true! I won't confirm nor deny which one is correct, but indeed - there IS work being done in the background to make everything happen! Again, I continue to apologize for the massive delays - we're working to get the move started as soon as we're ready! |
