I've updated the list. No features have been suggested at Cemetech, so this is the final list. Adding features/ideas are now closed.Polls and voting will be set up soon to decide on the final features of the calc. This is NOT the exact hardware specs though. (Like which chip, CPU, etc.) They will be decided further on. Thanks to everybody who contributed their idea(s)! P.S.: DJ, could you please set up a poll section within the OTZ80 Hardware forum? I don't want to crowd this one with tons of polls!

Since I saw some great OTZ80 software ideas in the hardware section, I've decided to make a new topic here dedicated to software discussion. Please remember to not bash anyone for their ideas, and that your suggested ideas are not final. They are also subject to hardware limitations as well. With that said, discuss the OTZ80 OS/software features here! A couple of ideas moved from the hardware topic: - Preloaded with Axe and math programs - Calculus support (??) (Note: Derivatives, etc. maybe?) - 3D graphing (??) Feel free to elaborate on these or build on those ideas.

Idea suggestion closed! Discussion may continue for exact specs and such though, so continue on! This is what I caught: - Better keys/durability - Backlit screen with ability to turn off the light - If going with the 3.5 mm headphone jack, it shouldn't be advertised as a headphone jack, but sound should be supported by the OS and will be easy to put in programs. - Preloaded with Axe and math programs - Batteries charge when plugged into the computer (AA rechargeable ones, that is, plus a setting if battery type is unknown) - Don't look too much like the TI-8x series (but enough for usability for students and compatibility with teachers) - Calculus support (??) (Note: Derivatives, etc. maybe?) - 3D graphing (??) (Note: Good idea, but that's firmware side, which a new topic will be opened up soon.) - Touch pad vs arrow keys - Emulators - Battery indicator light (??) (Please clarify!) - Cheap prices I will be adding these to the list shortly. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- @matthias1992: No, this topic won't be closed at all. Suggestions are now closed, but we will discuss details in here, esp. after the vote to get a clear idea of exactly what the final hardware is and what we will be placing in. As for the grayscale screen, please remember that we don't want a $50 screen. It's a third of the TI-84+ SE price! And we're trying to beat them with a cheap price. Of course, we want a good, responsive, grayscale screen, but nothing that is expensive. We're certainly not doing OLED screens (as you linked to), nor anything colored. The backlight itself is under debate as well. For this: http://www.vishay.com/displays/lcd/You are looking for the graphic displays, not the character based ones. I prefer using a trustworthy website to order parts. Not that these aren't, but I like to be a little cautious as well. That said, DigiKey and Mouser are very good suppliers. If you're hunting for LCDs, I suggest using Mouser first. Unless you don't mind doing some serious googling (DigiKey doesn't want to show anything unless you know what you want), Mouser is good. Mouser: http://www.mouser.com/Optoelectronics/Displays/LCD-Displays/_/N-6j735?Keyword=LCD&FS=TrueDigiKey: http://search.digikey.com/scripts/DkSearch/dksus.dll?Cat=524918&k=LCDOh, and do note the LCD controllers as well.

@willrandship: NO emulators, period. We don't want to give TI a reason to sue us.
In general, it's either Alpha Lock or a separate keyboard (ABCDE on the botton, like the TouchPad in a way)
FINAL CHANCE TO SUBMIT IDEAS! TODAY IS THE LAST DAY! AT MIDNIGHT, SUBMITTING IDEAS WILL BE CLOSED! (Submit ideas in this thread)

I've updated the suggested features list. Please note that suggestions for the OTZ80 will end this Friday, which is August 13th.If you still have some ideas, suggest them in the hardware discussion topic, which is here: http://ourl.ca/6594(Yikes - Friday the 13th??!? Hopefully nothing unlucky/bad will happen...)

Here are the final features that we (both Cemetech and Omnimaga) have decided on: - eZ80 50 MHz CPU, hopefully underclockable to 20 MHz More will be added here as voting occurs. Please do not post in this topic. This topic is meant for tracking features only. If you want to discuss features, please go here: http://ourl.ca/6594

Here are the suggested features that we (both Cemetech and Omnimaga) will be voting on: - Wifi POSTED POLL- Backlight- Mini USB or regular USB POSTED POLL- 2.5 mm link cable or 3.5 mm link cable POSTED POLL- SD card POSTED POLL- ABCDE keyboard or old Alpha lock? POSTED POLL- Screen size/resolution - old 96x64, or higher? POSTED POLL -> But with same actual dimensions, but better pixel density. -> Suggested high resolutions: 192x128, 240x160, 320x240 -> Aiming at a 3:2 aspect ratio - Memory size (need to do a bit of research before deciding on options, this is top priority) -> RAM, Flash ROM -> Note that eZ80 can only address up to 16 MB, any more needs swapping -> GOOD Flash chips, something that lasts for a VERY long time - Sound? (NON-HARDWARE FEATURE)- Linking: FAT filesystem emulation for easy, simple transfers (NON-HARDWARE FEATURE)- Grayscale screen INCLUDED AS SCREEN FEATURE- Internal rechargeable battery, AA battery or AAA battery POSTED POLLNewly added ideas/features:- Better keys/durability IMPROVEMENT, NOT FEATURE- Backlit screen with ability to turn off the light POSTED POLL- If going with the 3.5 mm headphone jack, it shouldn't be advertised as a headphone jack, but sound should be supported by the OS and will be easy to put in programs. (NON-HARDWARE FEATURE)- Batteries charge when plugged into the computer (AA rechargeable ones, that is, plus a setting if battery type is unknown) (This is both hardware and software) - Don't look too much like the TI-8x series (but enough for usability for students and compatibility with teachers) (NON-HARDWARE FEATURE)- Touch pad vs arrow keys vs arrow keys with a small, flat joystick in the center POSTED POLL- Battery indicator light POSTED POLL- Low cost hardware (NON-HARDWARE FEATURE)I will NOT be looking into the original thread for suggested features. It's kind of long, isn't it? That means if you still have features to suggest, suggest them in the feature discussion topic. Suggestions will close this Friday. (August 13th) Why? School is about to start VERY soon (for some, it already has), and we really need a solid foundation before people start becoming busy and such.Suggestions are closed. Voting will begin very soon. Please do not post in this topic. This topic is meant for tracking features only. If you want to discuss features, please go here: http://ourl.ca/6594

That did inspire me to post a topic about it. I don't know what made nemo suggest calc creating though. He's also another factor in leading me to post a topic.

Excellent. Please post your ideas. I really think we should do wifi. Also, I'm reading up on arm asm for the os. Albert, are you going to be the head of arm hardware or software? I personally don't want linux and would rather create my own os. How much experience do you have with hardware vs. Firmware
I'll probably be the ARM software head, but remember that head position isn't just limited to one person. I think bwang also should join the team. He's also pretty good with Linux. Hardware? I love looking at the hardware, but when it comes to making decisions, assembling it, designing, etc., I'm not the one to ask. calc84 and maybe some others can be heads for this one, since they know what they're doing. As for you.... IF you really want to design a OS from scratch in ARM, you really have to exceed Linux. Good hardware support, multitasking, efficient memory management, GUI, and easy development are key things to a good OS. I just think Linux can already do those tasks, and really reduce development time. We're not putting the whole Ubuntu system into the calc. We're starting with Angstrom Linux, which is pretty much barebone, and then adding stuff on it to create the calc. ARM ASM is magnitudes harder than Z80. It's pretty much like x86: a least 10,000 lines of code to get it up and running - a simple terminal, that is. Not mentioning that the Nspire uses a toolkit to build upon. Anyway, it's your choice. Me and bwang will probably get started with the Linux development as soon as the hardware is finalized. If you want to, you can get a head start on the OS. Candidates for hardware include the ARM PrimeCell PL110, which is an LCD controller chip, and calc84 mentioned the LPC313x ARM core. Excellent. Please post your ideas. I really think we should do wifi. Also, I'm reading up on arm asm for the os. Albert, are you going to be the head of arm hardware or software? I personally don't want linux and would rather create my own os. How much experience do you have with hardware vs. Firmware Hmm well I do recommend using a linux like kernel though, it's very powerful. But indeed linux can be confusing and we want a easy GUi, so let's use the power of the linux kernel but the ease of use say, windows. Altough most programmers hate it you gotta say its quite easy to use. That is until the errors kick in.
Oh yes, that's definitely the plan. Linux is a very solid base to work on. Of course, no student will ever see a terminal. (We won't kill the terminal, but we won't show it either. ) All the guts of Linux will be hidden with a very useful. pretty GUI. Programming isn't that hard. I guess you could complain about GTK and such, but wxWidgets and QT are also very solid UI frameworks. Ease of Windows + Linux core = Decent OS

There's quite a few major changes in the OTARM project. I'm too tired (it's 1:38 AM in the morning) to write them out, so hopefully other users can. I'll add them here accordingly. If you don't want to wait, you can check out today's and yesterday's IRC logs. Basically, we've kind of evaluated some strengths and weaknesses of certain options and chipsets, and have a loose decision of what to have for this calc. Of course, the decisions are up for a vote, as always. That's all I can say for now! This post will be edited accordingly.

Likely, but I'm not 100% sure. The lovely picture on the 1st page has a left box indicating some features, and surprisingly enough points to one chip.
