Gaming Discussion / Twitch plays stuff
« on: February 28, 2014, 12:34:20 am »
So I got around making a bot based on Twitch plays Pokémon... You can (sometimes) see it in action at http://www.twitch.tv/juju2143. Login and input the commands to the emulator on the chat!

Also the code is open source if someone wanna try it out: https://github.com/juju2143/twitchplaysbot

It works with almost every game (only NES and SNES games has been tested though), and before you ask, yes TI-83 games would work, but unfortunately there's no decent emulator that support Lua scripting... (see the Bizhawk thread)

Also the video have like 20 seconds lag anyone knows why?

Web Programming and Design / 10 years of juju2143.ca
« on: February 24, 2014, 12:15:33 am »
Well, it seems my website turned 10 today. I already wrote about its history here (I'd add the fact julosoft.net redesigned into a corporate website with my video games portfolio while juju2143.ca became more of a front page where you can find my contact info and many of the projects I've done).

The first page was created in Feburary 2004, then it went through many URLs and redesigns... Suprisingly, version 1 of the site is still online after 10 years. Throughout the years, I offered many services, random PHP scripts and files were hosted there as well as forums, IRC channels and networks, projects and other websites. My mom's website also still exists (v1 of my site was a subdirectory of her account, while today it's on my account and it's currently getting redesigned on zabimage.com :P)

So yeah, happy birthday, website. :D

TI Z80 / TI-83+ emu rerecording support
« on: February 18, 2014, 10:24:18 pm »
Figured I should start a thread about that. I noticed a while ago TASVideos actually supports the TI-83 through their in-house emulator, BizHawk. Talked to the devs on their IRC channel on Freenode, they told me TI-83 support is pretty much a toy on their emulator (probably because the Game Boy uses the same processor with an extended instruction set), I was pretty much the first person to request it and therefore it have minimal support. (It's at the state they have to figure out what's the difference between a 83 and a 83+.)

TASVideos maintains a list of desired features in an emulator here in order to accept movies to their database: http://tasvideos.org/EmulatorResources/Features.html Correct me if I'm wrong, but the only 2 things missing to Wabbitemu and/or Tilem are savestates and a movie file format so you can send TASVideos TASes. Alternatively, another thing we could do is improve BizHawk's 83+ support. (The devs would welcome your help.)

So this is my suggestion. I think it would be pretty fun to accurately TAS the many games we have on TI-83+/84+.

Other / Juju's Fish Tank Project
« on: February 05, 2014, 02:53:49 am »
Well, this is yet another idea I have in mind, whether I'll complete it or not I have no idea... But oh well I'll just write it here so I can take notes and have your input on that as well.

So my mom recently acquired 2 fishtanks because my brother wanted domesticated shrimps (not the ones you eat) and some fishes and, like the computer geek I am, I was like, why not automatizing that up with some sensors and remote controls? I guess that would be kinda fun to have a webpage to turn on and off the lights and read and log the temperature. Yeah, there's some kits you can buy for that, but I think it would be pretty interesting if I do it myself. So here's a list of the parts needed...

  • Turning on and off the lights (done, I have a Belkin WeMo switch)
  • Temperature sensors (I found some free samples, I guess it's not that hard to waterproof them in silicone, that or I just buy a pre-waterproofed one.)
  • pH/ammoniac/nitrite/nitrate sensors (yeah those one are pretty expensive, so I'll just wait until I'm rich.)
  • Some LEDs (if I waterproof the temp sensor myself, better throw some LEDs in. Also probably change the colors on them too via the web interface.)
  • A web interface (I just finished to set a webserver up in my room, so it's gonna be used... Also I can already start it with the WeMo API somehow, then expand once I have more features in the fishtanks.)
  • All those parts would be plugged on an Arduino or Raspberry Pi which would send the data to the web server.

So yeah, gonna be fun.

Gaming Discussion / Juju's Gaming Server
« on: January 25, 2014, 06:50:19 pm »
As you know, I'm taking over backup2 from Alberthrocks, a nice 2GB RAM server, and I intend to put a game server on it, but first I should gauge how many people here are interested.

So I'm asking you, which games are you interested in to massively play multiplayer? Minecraft? Starbound? Garry's Mod? Something else? You decide. Give me your opinions in this thread and I'll decide which one have a consensus or is most popular. Voting ends when Albert hands me the server. Or when consenus is reached and we're ready to install the server, whatever.

You can also discuss about it, general server management or just general random jujufications on IRC on #juju on irc.omnimaga.org.

News / Magical equine creatures invades Omnimaga
« on: January 21, 2014, 12:10:45 am »
This week, the Omnimaga staff began the restructuration of its official IRC network dubbed Omninet, a network aimed to be specialized in programming and graphic calculators.

However, since the first days of the restructuration, magical equine creatures known as ponies has been seen under the hood. Indeed, Derpy and Fluttershy, two pegasi (winged ponies) from the mythic town of Ponyville, Equestria, has been given operator access on the network, the latter even owning one of the servers linked.

DerpyBot and SweetieBot, robotic copies or respectively Derpy and Sweetie Belle made to be responsive 24/7, and one of the princesses of Equestria, Luna, has been seen on the network as well, with SweetieBot taking up the channel administration duties.

We are still unaware if the ponies are only here to help or they secretely plan an invasion or a coup d'état from Equestria on Omnimaga. Omnimaga, as we know from its -maga suffix, is an important producer of magic of all types, a resource Equestria extremely values.

Software is being written by Eeems to help manage the different servers and statistics software has been installed with stats on all the channels created, its users and plenty of graphics updated real-time. The chatbox on the header of the site is also linked to both Omninet and EFNet. While our official IRC channel is now on Omninet, the link to the channel on EFNet is still being maintained for the foreseeable future.

The current Omninet operators are Eeems, Geekboy, Sorunome (Derpy), Alberthrocks, AngelFish and Juju (Fluttershy) and the servers are {omni,eeems,irp,saphira}.irc.omnimaga.org.

Computer Projects and Ideas / A new scripting language for Linux
« on: January 11, 2014, 02:57:34 am »
So I felt like practicing my C/C++ skills, and I thought, why not writing a programming language? So that's what I did. This one will be heavily based on the TI-BASIC and Axe syntax, but instead of emulating a 96x64 monochrome screen, it'll just output stuff to stdout like nearly every scripting language out there, like Python and Lua. That is, I don't intend fully emulating the TI-83+, but rather adapt it to the Linux operating system.

Right now, it's barely working, not much is implemented outside of numbers, strings, A-Z, Str0-9, Ans, ->, Disp, Input and the fact : behaves like \n.

You can download and compile it here: https://github.com/juju2143/tibasic

It should work for Linux and Mac OS X. For you Windows guys, you can try Cygwin.

And if you like, I'll just throw a bonus in, that is, 2 languages for the price of one!

General Discussion / The Rebirth of TIMGUL
« on: January 01, 2014, 07:38:24 pm »
So yeah the other day your favorite Omnimaga admins and I were cleaning up the old 1&1 account formerly used by Omnimaga and/or TIMGUL and I transferred what was left on it (the TIMGUL domain name) on my own account... It was successful and it added another year to the expiration date. Now that it's on my account and it expires in October 2015, why not doing something interesting with it?

So I made a blog. You can check it out on blog.mtv-music-generator.com. For you Tumblr users, you can follow it just here.

Now time to fully customize the theme and add some content... (I also hire collaborators, if you're interested.)

Computer Projects and Ideas / Illusiat 5
« on: December 28, 2013, 09:37:40 pm »
This thread is for discussing about Illusiat 5, a PC game by DJ Omnimaga, how to run it, updates about recovering the graphics from the exe and maybe talks about a remake.

So Geekboy and I are recovering the graphics from the .exe... So far it works, the files are uncompressed in the exe. Updates soon.

Download it here: http://www.omnimaga.org/index.php?action=downloads;sa=view;down=140

Extraction results: http://juju2143.ca/illusiat5/illusiat5pics.zip (JPGs converted to PNG and GIFs not animated due to limitations of my custom script)
Possible offsets: http://juju2143.ca/illusiat5/results3.txt (have fun picking up which ones are legit) (EDIT: rewrote the script to clean it up and to be more accurate)

Computer Projects and Ideas / The Fuxxy Adventures
« on: December 19, 2013, 05:51:24 pm »
Well, I'm afraid I won't really be on as much as I want in the next few days due to some problems with my ISP (don't worry I'll try to make some trips to the public library or the university meanwhile and it'll be solved in the next few days)... Worry not, as school ended I started working again full-time on my videogames projects. As in, a new Supersonic Ball PC update is (tentatively) scheduled for before the end of the year with a bunch of new features (most of which are nearly done).

Speaking of which, I'll leave you with a teaser of my new project in collaboration with my brother I threw up together with some random background and music (hope you guys don't mind, it probably won't actually be in the project)... Happy Christmas!

Other / The USB Christmas Tree Project
« on: December 13, 2013, 02:50:54 pm »
Ever want to have a fancy, programmable Christmas tree? Look no more! It's so easy I'll just give out a recipe on how to do your own. I started this project yesterday when I went to the dollar store and I found battery-powered Christmas lights.

Yeah, I'm not the best at making trees.

You'll need:

  • Battery-powered lights (about $1, mine have 10 lights and is powered with 2 batteries)
  • A tree (also about $1 for the not-actually-a-tree-but-a-garland-on-a-plastic-frame variety, mine's about a feet high, perfect for your desk)
  • An Arduino or any MCU lying around with its USB cable (around $25-30). Any programmable board that have at least a PWM pin and a ground pin will do, I used a TI C2000 launchpad, but using an Arduino might be easier to program.
  • Wire and/or an IDE cable (You should have those lying around if you did some electronics before. Else you should find that at the hardware store.)
  • No batteries! (around $0)

1. Decorate your tree with your lights. (Optional? Or else it won't be a tree otherwise.)

2. Plug the + side of the battery pack to a pin that supports PWM on your microcontroller and the - side to the ground. (An IDE cable might be handful if you don't want to solder and the pins on the controller are male, unlike the Arduino.)

3. Load up a PWM example on your microcontroller, compile and upload it. Be sure the PWM pin it uses is the same as the one you plugged the tree in. You can send a number between 0 and 255 to that pin, 0 being 0% intensity and 255 is 100% intensity. (In my example, it's a fade in/out example.)

And there we go, a pretty christmas tree.

Now what else should I do with that?

  • Use a button to switch between patterns
  • Control the intensity via the serial port
  • Change the intensity according to the music

The sky is the limit! Any other suggestions? I should try those ideas out in the holiday time. (Yeah there's no pics of the steps, I'll might add some later.)
