Other Calculators / Real Life Nightmares: The stories of what could have been, but will never be« on: April 19, 2009, 08:33:50 pm »
This has happened to any programmer at least once: You're working on a project when, suddenly and without cause, something happens; your batteries die, the calc crashes, a friend presses one too many buttons- fate has conspired against you . Everything you had, gone :'(
We may never know how many projects have been lost. But here, in this thread, some record of them will remain. If this has ever happened to you and a large part of your life was lost, post what it was, how it was destroyed, and any lessons you've learned or wisdom to share. A compilation of ways to ensure you never have to post an obituary in this thread: - Backup often - ...that means on a computer as well - Use groups - Backup multiple ways (USB, email, etc...) - Don't rely heavily on commands such as Omnicalc's restoreMem( - Test ASM programs on an emulator - If someone clears your memory once, don't give them a chance to do it again. Total casualties so far [as of 14 June 2009]: 24 confirmed 363

Ya know, I'm starting to like that idea (Kalan's maybe?) for a thread to keep a running count of projects lost due to clears (RAM or otherwise). "Real Life Nightmares: The stories of what could have been, but will never be"

Introduce Yourself! / Re: 'sup« on: April 19, 2009, 07:47:02 pm »Hi, I'm new here, but I know some of you from TI-Basic developer portal. Its nice to find a community that's a bit more bent on games than Basic in general .Welcome to Omnimaga Builderboy! I guess you could say that we're more into applied BASIC than some other sites. 365
TI Z80 / Re: Portal 2« on: April 19, 2009, 07:44:32 pm »
Sounds great
Quote It might be worthy to note that I had this game almost finished twice already. I had completed the engine and most of the levels, and was working on the story. Then two idiots at school stole my Calculator and erased all of m memory... twice...You might want to back up your calculator every now and then 366
Introduce Yourself! / Re: Myself« on: April 19, 2009, 01:43:50 pm »Members and staff going close to leave Omnimaga for sites such as MaxCoderz and Revsoft as soon as they started learning ASM was something quite common back in the old forums days too. This is also a bit why I said it seems we're doomed to never have any major ASM project showcased by staff over here (I mean stuff that no one thought it could ever be possible on a calculator, such as this emulator)Don't take this the wrong way, but considering that most of Omnimaga's projects are in BASIC, there aren't very many people highly knowledgeable about Asm. At places like Revsoft and MaxCoderz, a lot of people there can be a lot more helpful (such as programming help, rigorous testing, etc...) than here. Once we (at Omnimaga) start to get more and more great Asm programmers, there will probably be an increase in people who come here with/for Asm. 367
Introduce Yourself! / Re: Myself« on: April 19, 2009, 11:30:22 am »oh wow almost the entire thing is spoiledPeople kept bugging him about what he was doing instead of working on F-Zero, so he posted a screenie of Zelda. Then people kept bugging him about what it could do, how it was done, and for more screenies. We've got calc84maniac as the resident Asm programmer here, and he's doing pretty well. I have finals next week, so there won't be any progress on Chip's Challenge until I'm finished with them. 368
Introduce Yourself! / Re: Myself« on: April 19, 2009, 01:36:41 am »Such as *cough*83+SE/84+/SE Gameboy emulators*cough* I said too much (altough I think it was leaked on Revsoft too)It was more than just a leak . calc84maniac basically hi-jacked his F-Zero thread, with screenies, progress and a to-do list. 369

Sounds good trev
Quote ...all built around a new story line that i can't reveal right now. But I am still progressing...slowlyDoes that also mean that you've got an idea for the name of this game? 372
TI Z80 / Re: Illusiat 13: The Lost Chapter« on: April 14, 2009, 02:01:28 pm »Edited forum description since the final calculator platforms on which the final version will come out are still undecided yet. Since Casio released OS 2.0 for the Casio FX-9860G and now it appears to support strings, this could make a port to this model very possible and maybe easier. An easy port to a Casio calculator? I think that would be the first major multi-platform calculator game! 373

You could try what HF used for Metroid Pi. That game ran at a good speed.

Pokémon Purple / Re: Pokemon Purple« on: April 11, 2009, 08:40:59 pm »It would also require me to come up with a different way to display the pokemon and text. If I do do this, I would not include the height/weight stuff, if that was even in the originals, I don't know. I will have to fire up a copy and see.The originals had the height/weight stuff, but was completely useless (like in all subsequent versions). I'd say get rid of height/weight and add in the text entry, which would make it closer to the original (at least the cool parts of the original ). But, as you said, you would have to redesign the Pokedex display, which (I think) is one of the most complete aspects of PP so far. 375
Gaming Discussion / Re: Cool online games« on: April 11, 2009, 07:08:14 pm »I never bothered to try reallyYou have no idea how lucky you are! I tried it out once because a friend recommended it, but I didn't stick with it. A few months later I tried again, this time putting some effort into figuring out why everyone kept playing, and that's how I got hooked/addicted/dependent. |
