Yes, it's time for a demo of reuben 3!
This topic is only for discussion about this demo and suggestions/bigfixes that arise because of this, for other stuff please use this topic: https://ourl.ca/21881

So, attached you can find the program! Just run it and everything should be working if you have at least 52 bytes of free RAM! (To be honest, who doesn't?)

To change the grayscale settings you will need to change them in any graylib program, haven't programmed a GUI for that yet, Reuben1 for example would do for changing the grayscale settings :P

Use your arrow keys to move around and the 2ND key to interact with things!
You won't get this "auto-aligning" if you hold down 2nd while walking.

Use the DEL key to exit the game. I know, this currently also works in the battle engine but it will be removed as that allows you to skip battles :P

Please comment on how you like it / feature suggestions / bug reports!

Known issues
  • Battles have no intro/outro animation
  • Level up text is overlayed with progress bar
  • Battles don't have a background

I tried out the demo. It was pretty cool, nice graphics, all that.

Issues:

I noticed that Reuben seems to move slower here than in the earlier games. I liked his speed better in Reuben 2.
Reuben also dies pretty quickly. I saved my progress after receiving the stick(a stick?), and then went into the forest where Reuben was promptly beaten up by some cat-thing. With only 55HP after a single battle, I continued and ended up dead.

Is that timer thing something you're trying? It seems a little slow.

There seem to be no bugs. Keep it up, I can't wait to play the complete one!
*Most of this could be just my calculator. I'm not sure.

Thanks for your feedback!

As for the speed, I probably won't be able to change it much, as i re-wrote how quite some internals of the walking are working, so that I can use like path tiles and thelike, but I can still look into it a bit.

As to Reuben dying quickly: When saving you'll restore HP/MP, and I haven't implemented bottles with water which will heal you yet. And after leveling up you are stronger.

As for the timer thingy, it is slow at first, as reuben isn't able to attack quickly, yet! IDK if i implemented that yet, but with leveling up that timer will fill up quicker!

As for the stick, there will be different kinds of weapons in this game ;)

Which calc did you use BTW?

I'm using a TI-84+. Also, will the NPCs have detail(i.e., faces)? I always thought it would enhance the game to have NPCs that weren't just shorter cousins of Slender-man. Would it be possible to use pixilart.net to draw sprites for you? I'm helping develop another game, but I have time. :w00t:

I'd be quite happy for NPC spires! Sprites must be 8x8 pixels and 4lvl grayscale

Alright! I'll get started after I'm done with my Algebra 1 Homework, then convert the images w/ GIMP 2.0.

EDIT:
I further scrutinized this demo and came up w/ 4 pages of my thoughts.
I don't want to spend forever retyping it all, since I wrote it on paper, so just scanned the papers.
The only problem is, I don't know how to place attachments in a modified post, so I'll just let Eeems scold me
for double posting.

Maybe sometime i will actualy try to finish that greyscale routine for you, as i also need it in my greyscale game :P

A: Because I used the same sprite, feel free to come up with another one

Q: How come when Reuben levels up, the words "LEVEL UP!" appear on top of the "battle bar"?
A: Because I've barely spent any work on that animation, thanks for pointing it out.

Q: Why does Reuben become transparent when he walks? When he's on the path to Ebus's house, he's like a ghost!
A: Probably a timing issue (I'm using dark hacks to make it run quicker). Which calc are you using? 84+? Did you set the grayscale settings via the Reuben1 app? (they use the same appvar for the settings)

Wow, lots of feedback Dudeman313. Nice to see you interested in this project. About sprites, the best way to get better it just to do it. Front facing is the easiest for me personally. Look at other's examples. The spriter's resource: http://www.spriters-resource.com/ is a great place to see sprites ripped from various old games. I find them to be very useful for reference. :thumbsup:

I've also used Dwedit's sprite page for inspiration, though those are mostly b&w.
