I thought I would share this with you. Iambian posted this in #omnimaga about 4 months ago. It's a SMW custom level with no music. The person who did the custom level (which doesn't even need any keypress to make it through) added some japaneese rave music in the background and the SMW sounds are totally synced with the music. o.o
This must have taken months to create. Someone really had load of free time on his hand

There's alot of these around with music (Danjo?)where mario acutally moves to the music and theres a whole fanbase dedicated to them. Theres a program for making the levels. Special blocks/tiles in the level editor force him to move jump ect.

yeah true, I wonder how they sync it to the music though, it must require load of trial and error in block placement.

If you notice, some of the tiles around the place move slowly. This is a cheap way to increase/decrease Mario's speed to help him align himself better to the music. Other than that, yes, it is a s***load of trial and error and more ways to make it look amazing and beautiful at the same time.
It's noted somewhere that the video took the creator around half a year (6mo) to create that beast.
Also, the thing might've been made easier by the possibility that there may have been breakpoints in the music to allow stages in the giant level to be tested individually. If I was creating such a stage, I'd at least like that amount of comfort.

so, ive heard the haruhi theme, the SMRPG theme, a megaman 2 theme ( i believe wilys castle ), then another song from haruhi, then to a slow mario theme, now a final fantasy theme ( !!!
). I probably missed loads of songs, but it was fun to recognize them ^_^
EDIT: Look! Same songs, same level, but with the original words!
