Title: UFO Defender 1.0
Post by: boot2490 on July 26, 2012, 02:42:08 am
original post here (http://www.dsgamemaker.com/dsgmforum/viewtopic.php?f=14&t=3064)

HUZZAH! I am not dead, and I probably will still be making games and such.

Anyways, here is a quick pick-up-and-play shmup that involves aliens, high quality custom graphics and music (in my opinion), and a veritable f***ton of explosions.

It is the year 30 billion, and Earth is being attacked by an insanely immense horde of violently flammable UFO's. Emergency force fields have been erected, but they are weakening by the second. Your job is to destroy as many UFO's as possible before the defenses cave in, and then post your high scores here.

And now for some screenshots:

And now for credit where credit is due:
Michael H. for giving me the idea for the game some years back
Detonation Films for the explosions
James for DSGM of course

All graphics and music are by me.

In the near future, I hope to make bugfixes, and then make a more challenging and in-depth sequel with an upgrade system and tower defense-like wave and auto turret game mechanics. But for now, and then, too, we have this quick and fun score racking explosion-fest.

Enjoy! (http://www.dsgamemaker.com/dsgmforum/download/file.php?id=3238)

Looks alright, but you might want to state somewhere in your topic what system this is for. ;)

Oh... duh.

It's for DS.

Wow that's great! Will it run on a 3DS though? If so, then do I need to load the file on a SD card or will I need extra softwares? I never ran homebrew stuff before.

I think you need a flashcart... speaking of which, I should order one soon

Are flash carts like SD cards?

No, they're more like game carts (but they're unofficial). Sadly, many of them are blocked on the 3DS, especially if you have the latest version of the firmware.

IIRC, the developers release a firmware update to the flashcart so it will work... (side note: the normal R4 isn't compatible with 3DS)
Wait, I almost forgot! This looks really nice! If I get a flashcart, it'll be on there.

You can also play it on the computer with No$GBA (look it up).

Edit: Post 600 :D

Dang. I don't think flash carts are sold here where I live. I guess I'll go the No$GBA route, although I have bad memories of that emulator, which forced me to reformat my previous computer due to crashing horribly beyond recovery (incompatible video card, or maybe the one I got on the emu database had malware).

Flashcarts aren't usually in-stores... plus you can get good prices online anyway. I've heard that the R4 isn't 3DS compatible, although the R4i Gold is...

It usually takes weeks to get something shipped here online, though (usually close to one month) D:

Is there a way to play homebrew DS games on a SD card for the 3DS?

Well, there was an exploit in EA's Sudoku DSiWare, but that got pulled from the shop... so not that i know of. Sorry

Sorry to hear. I guess for now I'll rely on the emulator in VirtualPC.

/me has had better experiences with DesMuME

this does look pretty cool; i'll have to test it out =D

I usually use DesMuME when I'm using computer with decent graphic card. But as far as I know, no$gba is bit more compatible with older graphic card. (Even though setting save format almost every time I use no$gba tires me sometimes)

Here's the flashcart I use:
http://eng.supercard.sc/manual/dstwo/
However, upon further testing, it appears I have a fatal bug; all the sprites save for explosions tend to disappear after a few hundred points, at least on some plays. But other than that it's cool.

This looks awesome! What libraries did you use to make it?

Oh - actually, I used DS Game Maker. (http://dsgamemaker.com/)

That's really cool! Too bad it's not free...it sure beats coding everything in C(++) and having the compiler yell at you half the time  <_<
Nice explosions, btw!  :D

It totally is free dude...

The only thing that isn't free is the flashcart and you can play it with an emulator.

Also, welcome to omnimaga.

Then what's the $14.99 purchase for? Does it just get rid of the watermark, or do you really need to buy it?

Also, (grammar nazi) in your signature it should be "A useful tool!" (the u is technically a consonant sound).

If you are going to be a grammar nazi you should at least be correct. The letter "u" is a vowel.

Yes, but the usage of a/an is only based on if it's a vowel or consonant sound, not what the letter itself is.
Title: Re: UFO Defender 1.0
Post by: TIfanx1999 on August 07, 2012, 03:59:01 am
Ah, I thought it was based on if it started with a vowel or not. I guess that explains why it sounded incorrect to me, even though I remembered otherwise.

~Ignore me then. :P

Yeah, English can be one hell of a crazy language sometimes x.x

Indeed for that part. Also it's generally discouraged to be grammar nazi on the forums when it risks causing thread off-topicnes like this :P (although at least you were polite about it, unlike some other people several years ago on a few other calc forums :P). I knew with some vowels it's a and others an, but being french makes it hard to figure out which one lol.

I should try DesMuME. My video card is rather recent actually so maybe that could work. I just don't trust No$GBA at all, after it damaged my Windows install twice before (although the second time my computer miraculously survived it)...

Boot2490, I just tried UFO Defender in an emulator. It's awesome. I can't wait to try it out on real hardware tomorrow (I'm picking up my DSTWO from the post office tomorrow).
