AJAX technology would make for a more "live" forum (almost like a chat or something).

The PM Pop-up:
You could make it show an initially hidden IFRAME that the alert will appear and then when you get one, and then make the Close Window button "hide" the IFRAME. Would usually work even if you have a pop-up blocker.
