I added one of these to mionet and was thinking it would maybe be useful here as well. for example I have a video that had to be audio swapped on youtube, while on niconico you can view it as it was originally intended, this tag would provide a nice alternative for people who have a nico account and/or want to share something from there.

Well that could be nice. I don't really go on nico a lot though, but we might add it if people actually uses it and if it's as secure as YouTube embedding.

It would be nice, but I rather not install one new mod for every video site. I could possibly use the custom BB Code mod, though, since it supports HTML (eg: we even have [tibd] bbcode)

Yeah. It's because the site is in Japan. This is why on front page I kinda prefer that people use Youtube.

Indeed, YouTube is owned by Google, therefore it have loads of servers across the world to make it faster. Your ISP may even have a Google server so it could load at insane speeds. Nico is not as big, therefore I guess it have only a couple of servers in some datacenter in Japan.
