Clickable banner and removal of home button
« on: March 22, 2010, 02:36:47 pm »
I am asking, because I would like to add a few more options in the navbar, but in 1024x768 it is getting quite crowded as a forum staff. For us who got the "ACP" button, the navbar almost fills the entire page width.

Options I thought about are linking to tools such as SourceCoder and Galandros disassembler.

I'm gonna get rid of the music player button and include it in downloads section, though.

Although after few weeks time, I might be able to change my habit :P

Spoiler For funny life mathematics:
1. ROMANCE MATHEMATICS
Smart man + smart woman = romance
Smart man + dumb woman = affair
Dumb man + smart woman = marriage
Dumb man + dumb woman = pregnancy
2. OFFICE ARITHMETIC
Smart boss + smart employee = profit
Smart boss + dumb employee = production
Dumb boss + smart employee = promotion
Dumb boss + dumb employee = overtime
3. SHOPPING MATH
A man will pay $2 for a $1 item he needs.
A woman will pay $1 for a $2 item that she doesn't need.
4. GENERAL EQUATIONS & STATISTICS
A woman worries about the future until she gets a husband.
A man never worries about the future until he gets a wife.
A successful man is one who makes more money than his wife can spend.
A successful woman is one who can find such a man.
5. HAPPINESS
To be happy with a man, you must understand him a lot and love him a little.
To be happy with a woman, you must love her a lot and not try to understand her at all.
6. LONGEVITY
Married men live longer than single men do, but married men are a lot more willing to die.
7. PROPENSITY TO CHANGE
A woman marries a man expecting he will change, but he doesn't.
A man marries a woman expecting that she won't change, and she does.
8. DISCUSSION TECHNIQUE
A woman has the last word in any argument.
Anything a man says after that is the beginning of a new argument.

Girls = Time * Money (Girls are a combination of time and money)
Time = Money (Time is money)
Girls = Money squared (So, girls are money squared)
Money = sqrt(Evil) (Money is also the root of all evil)
Girls = sqrt(Evil) squared (So, girls are the root of all evil squared)
Girls = Evil (Thus, girls are evil)
*Girls=Evil credit goes to Compynerd255*

Its always cool to have a home button but even without this ACP button you are speaking of...the navbar is still quite large.

My thoughts;

1) merge "news" and "new posts".  Maybe even with "Forum"
2) move "projects" to "downloads"
3) potentially remove "logout"

I have a super wide screen, so this really doesnt affect me :P but i can see how a smaller bar would be helpfull.  The popup menus would be cool, kinda like that TiBD has.  Can that be done Eeems?

Mhmm it looks like the home button will remain then. I don't plan to merge downloads with projects, personally. I would rather give both some visibility. On the old site it took 2 years before ppl figure out we even have a download section at all, because it was called "Archives". And no merging of news and new posts, since it would be impossible. I could always add a "more news" link at the bottom of news on front page, though, but idk if it will look nice...

And as less javascript as possible, so no drop downs or the like. I dislike these because they get annoying as hell when trying to click on stuff below x.x, not to mention cross-browser problems

Tricky changes...

It is quite hard to move things but News can be accessed through Home or Forums at the cost of 1 more click. (I never used the News navbar link... O_o)
Hobbing in calculator projects.

well I felt being able to access more news was nice without having to go through other pages or through an hard to notice link at the bottom of portal.

And yeah no home button was too hectic, finally x.x

I kid you not, i just now realized that the banner on newgrounds takes you back to the home page.
I can not tell you how many times i typed in the address or deleted the end of the url just to get back to the homepage.
i feel like an idiot. lol

I think it was typical in the past for sites to have the banner clickable, but more and more, today, sites uses different standards. In some designs, having the banner clickable can be annoying, especially when it's huge. In other cases, it works nice.

I myself had a similar problem as you on Ticalc.org back then XD
