Computer Programming Board ideas
« on: May 12, 2011, 08:02:06 pm »
I have had this idea for a while that we should have a sub-board like the calc board for computer programming. We could have board in it on Languages/help/projects/general/etc. We have a lot of computer programmers on this site and I think it would be worthwhile to have a board for them also. This could also help organize boards in the Computer Project/General and make it easier to find where to put your topic.

This is just my 2 cents

Yeah that's what I thought for a while. I think projects should be in one board, still, but the programming one should be split in languages. What language board should be open, though? We don,t want to open empty boards either.

You mean like this? http://www.omnimaga.org/index.php?board=81.0

*edit 2*Oh, I missed that you meant subdividing this section. That might not be a bad idea.

Java and Python seem to be the most popular, but we only get about 1 thread per month asking for help in those languages... (I think)

*shrug*
My website: Currently boring.

Projects:
Axe Interpreter
   > Core: Done
   > Memory: Need write code to add constants.
   > Graphics: Rewritten.  Needs to integrate sprites with constants.
   > IO: GetKey done.  Need to add mostly homescreen IO stuff.
Croquette:
   > Stomping bugs
   > Internet version: On hold until I can make my website less boring/broken.

I thought about Java, Python and Computer C/C++ plus maybe another board for other languages and general help, kinda like for TI. We get a decent amount of discussions there, although I wouldn't add for example a Cobol board if nobody codes in it here. :P

Java, Python, Ruby, C, C++, Javascript, PHP, Assembly (other platforms than z80 or 68K or ARM or SH4), Others (like Lua, Groovy, Emerald, etc.)

Oh! I forgot game makers and the like X.x. After all we got a ROM hacking section and a bunch of people here are GM/BYOND/RMK users.

If we add JS/PHP, what should we do about the web board, though? Should it be kept only for web design?

I actually have java questions quite frequently so a java subforum would be nice to see
Loved this place, still the best producers of power metal, and sparked my dreams of coding.

Here is how I see it organized

Computer Development
>Computer (Programming) Help
>Programming Languages
>>Python
>>C/C++
>>Java
>>PHP/JS
>Programming Projects
>General Discussion
>Hardware/electronics
>ROM hacking
>Major Projects
>>pretty self explanatory just showing it would have subboards

It think Game discussion and electronics/hardware should be moved out of this since it would be primarily programmer focused

Well the thing is that it also includes computer talk, such as setup and viruses. Plus ROM hacking isn't necessarily for computer. Basically the section is for anything electronic-related that is not calc stuff.

I thought more about something like this:

Computer Development
>Computer Projects/Ideas
>Computer Programming Help
>>Python
>>C/C++
>>Java
>>PHP/JS
>>Other Computer Languages
>Web Design/HTML
>Hardware/electronics
>ROM hacking

But the issue with PHP/JS is that people would get confused between web dev and the computer board, since JS and PHP are primarly web development languages. I'M not a fan of having individual project sub-forums either because then we would start losing our focus from calcs too much and it would be extra work for admins.

This is just an idea but maybe there should be a separate computer help part of this. where someone could go and ask questions about computers. Like the Linux thread and a few others would fit in best there

Maybe I guess. This would mean general technology would be for the rest like if someone got a robot or something he's working on. I don't want to split the section too much, though, because it will be a nightmare to move everything (It took me 3 days the last time).

Here is how I'd split it up with descriptions on most f them
Computer Development-Technology Board
>Computer Projects/Ideas-Projects and ideas for projects discussion
>Computer Programming Help-Help with writing code
>>Python-Python programming help
>>C/C++-C/C++ coding help
>>Java-Java code help
>>PHP/JS-How to make websites work code help
>>Other Computer Languages-misc. computer languages withut enough users to have their own board
>Web Design/HTML-Discussion of weblayout and how to set it up
>Hardware/electronics-Discussion of things liek robots, building computers, and game systems
>ROM hacking-same as it is now
>General Discussion-General discussion of computers and programming
>Computer Help-Help with computer setup. Topics like Linux Help

I don't think this would be too split up. It would make it easy to find where to put your topic and hopefully help people get the help they need.

To be honest I think the general board is too redundant, as the computer programming board called other languages and the technology/hardware one would pretty much cover it. Also the computer help section would be confusing with the hardware board.

I understand your point on general discussion, but I do not see how Computer help would get confused with Electronics/hardware. They would only get confused in how we currently have it set up.
