Omnimaga on a mobile device
« on: October 30, 2012, 11:21:02 pm »
So why is omnimaga wierd on an iPod

I'm currently on my iPod now, instead of my laptop, though not on that app it tells me to get each time, and for some reason, the message board keeps spewing out more and more of the past and more past messages, so it slightly lags and I can barely scroll down fast enough.

Maybe we should develop mobile apps for Android and IOS.  I know that it would be cheaper to develop for Android than IOS though.  Android has a one time developer fee while Apple charges you yearly.  To solve that problem we might be able to put the app on Cydia, an App Store for Jailbroken devices although I don't know what their fees are.

Omnimaga has no proper mobile site since back when SMF 1.1 was still maintained, mobile devices could barely even get on the Internet. And the iPod browser is not compatible with OmnomIRC. You need to use Taptalk or the limited mobile version of the site at  http://www.omnimaga.org/index.php?imode or http://www.omnimaga.org/index.php?wap2

Android browsers seems to run Omni more properly than iOS ones, though.

And sadly none of the staff has the time to build a free mobile-friendly site. It would be nice to have an actual app like Taptalk, though, that is free. The other alternative would be to use a real computer.

Omnimaga is tapatalk enabled, and you can use the mobile versions if the normal site has issues. OmnomIRC is not mobile optimized, thus the bugs

Actually I remember we had this topic for mobile users: http://ourl.ca/6830

We definitively need to temporarily allow color in topic titles for a while :P

By the way about Tapatalk, it's really great and I often use it while on the board or somewhere else with working wi-fi. The only real issue is if you have absolutely no money, then you're screwed. If you have some money but no credit card, then you can buy prepaid Visa cards or iTunes gift cards in many stores like Walmart and buy the app.

What has the world come to when you have to pay $3 for a chatting app but only $7 for the minecraft game app

I really don't know. Some people are just way too greedy and they take advantage of the fact that many sites are not mobile-friendly (or in Omnimaga case, iPos/iBad-friendly) to abuse people.

I'm fairly sure that if Omnimaga made its own APP or mobile theme, it would be free with a donation button somewhere. However, for iDevice$ it might be impossible because I heard that you have to pay to publish apps on Apple Store. (in which case Jailbreaking might be a needed workaround)

Ahh.  There are so many things that  I want to do but there just isn't enough time to learn and do everything  :banghead:.  I'd really like to develop a mobile app for Omnimaga on Android but I don't have time to do it right now.  School kind of takes up most of my days and nights.  Maybe over the summer or over a break I can look into Android development.

Wouldn't that be awesome?  To have a mobile app with a built in IRC client just for Omnimaga? :)

Mobile

Add that link as a bookmark in mobile Safari, then open it when you're on a page that's not mobile. You can even use it before a page is done loading, which speeds up browsing considerably.

I use it all the time because I'm always following email notifications here, so I needed a fast way to change to the mobile version.

As for an IRC client for Omnimaga, have you seen my client? It's mobile-optimized :)

I browse the normal site on Opera mini on my (non smart) phone and it seems to do quite nicely. :) OMnomIRC doesn't work, but that's not really a big deal if I'm browsing mobile.

For me it takes about ten seconds to load a page, while the wap2 page is pretty much instantaneous.

Opera Mini doesn't do javascript client side, thus OmnomIRC not working. wap2 loads so much faster due to the fact that there are no images to load and hardly any extra text/tags.
