well given that there are maybe 3 pixel artists over here (*points to the lack of replies to Iambian's image request for CaDan and lack of replies in general in sprite threads*) I am unsure if they would spur more activity. In fact, if you look through the http://www.omnimaga.org/index.php?action=articles;cat=5 section, you can notice that there were fewer and fewer participants over the time. It may look like there are more for later contests but that's because the deadline was about 2 months instead of the former 2 weeks.

A Programming contest with prizes would be cool though. Something small, but there are always contests running at the same time that would compromise ours, we get our ideas stolen (for example we talk about a contest and one day later another forum announce they are starting a contest similar to ours) and on top of that, money issues would arise due to currency exchange rates and extremly high shipping costs. All these are reasons why the programming contest planned during summer 2006 never ever started.

On top of that Idk if I would have time to do it anymore, maybe someone else would have to pick up the idea x.x

I'll see

* yunhua98 hopes this wasn't too bad of a necropost...

EDIT:  err...  maybe it was pretty bad...

Wow epic necropost indeed.

To be honest now it could maybe work, but I am still not confident about it. A pixel art contest can easily be cheated as we have no proof someone didn't just convert an existing pic to 4 levels color and 16x16. Because of that, the original contests had lot of interest in their early days, but with the time, interest slowly waned to the point where someone won one by default.

On the first ever contest it worked out well, with 7 entries despite the board low activity, but on the 2nd one we only got 3 entries, forcing us to make the 3rd one 2 months long instead of 2 weeks. 4th contest had more attention because instead of about 500-1600 posts a month we averaged at 2500-4000 and had a bit more members. Those contest were advertised a lot on other sites, though. This is when image ripping off started. Afterward we had a color contest which got criticised a lot due to that and we stopped doing the for months. When they were revived it was more image converting again and we were forced to reduce the image sizes to insanely low proportions to prevent ripoffs. As a result of this and the lost credibility, the final contest had KermMartian winning by default.

Here are the original contest results: http://www.omnimaga.org/index.php?action=articles;cat=5

So to revive those contests, I would need suggestions on how to prevent image ripping.

well, how about the picture must either be able to fit on a calc screen of is something like Kerm's pic where it looks nothing like anything else you would find on any other website other than major calc sites.

It's very easy to conver pics to 94x64 grayscale, even monochrome. The best thing would be monochrome under very small resolutions, but then we don't know if the person didn't rip the sprite from another game. It could be just drawing a calc or something, though.

or maybe have a reference pic and have people draw the pic in greyscale at a different angle?
i don't really see how you could rip any pics doing that...
