Posting zip file attachments on the forum
« on: December 05, 2010, 10:22:21 pm »
I'm trying to post a zip file as an attachment (see http://ourl.ca/74475 ) and the forum won't let me.  When I try to upload it with a .zip suffix, it gets rejected, despite the fact that zip is listed as an "allowed file type", both on the edit-my-post page and on the error page.  Any idea what might be going wrong here?

(I also tried renaming it to .txt, but then all the CRs got helpfully turned into CR-LFs.)

It should be working fine, unless the zip file is larger than 2 MB (or maybe it was 4 MB, I forgot). Make sure to not do anything while uploading, as the upload is pretty sensitive. What browser do you use?

The file is 143 kB, so I doubt it's a size limitation.  I'm using Iceweasel (i.e., Firefox) 3.5.15.  It's very strange; I believe I've uploaded zip files here in the past.

Weird, let me check if it works...

EDIT It works fine in Opera. I think it works fine in FF on my side too. Maybe restart your browser? Also if you got an error the first time, do not click back to try again. You need to click modify then try from there. Also make sure it's not a common file name. Maybe name it like zuw878378.zip in case

EDIT: Confirmed to work perfectly in Mozilla Firefox v3.6.8 . Is Iceweasel some sort of third-party modified Firefox? It might be best to use the official builds if it's the case.

Looks like restarting the browser did the trick.  I still have no idea what was wrong, but thanks.

Iceweasel is the Debian rebranded version of Firefox; it's essentially identical, but (for weird and complicated reasons) they can't, or won't, use the Firefox name.

Ah right, glad it works now. Sometimes this happens and I have to click modify and retry again. Simplemachines attachment system is kinda weird, although not as bad as IPB 1.3 (it was so sensitive that if you scrolled the page, the 0.0001% additional CPU ressources it took cut the transfer and you got an error). We can't even upload attachments of the same file names anymore. With 4000-5000 files uploaded on the forums, it can be hard to find a name that isn't used like a variation of Zelda.

As for Iceweasel it's kinda like a fork, right?

Iceweasel is the exact same thing as Firefox but, due to Debian policies about licenses (that is, they distribute only free sofware, under a GPL, BSD or similar license), they cannot use Firefox's logo and name since it's a Mozilla trademark so they had to rebrand the software. The rest is free, you can do whatever you want to with. Fortunately, Mozilla made rebranding easy.

I finally cleared my sig after 4 years you're happy now?
