What to do with archives
« on: February 26, 2012, 03:53:07 pm »
Pretty much says it all.

I'm for integrating it into the existing site, but I don't know rather we should create an 'archive' forum and move all the posts in there, or move it into existing categories.

Personally I would move everything into existing categories, merging the old data with the new board, to keep everything in one place like on United-TI for example. However I assume the old posts would either need negative IDs (which I'm unsure if SMF and MySQL supports) or that you would have to write a SMF mod that sorts topics by last reply timestamp instead of last reply ID, to make sure the order remains right (although for the news subforum I don't think this might be a problem, but I could be wrong).

Regardless of what happens, however, it would be nice if those 73 news topics could be fixed (to have their original date with 10-ish AM time).

If somehow you decided to keep everything separate, then I think you should rename the categories so they're the exact same as here, but append (Archive) in the title or something.

I've altered the SQL DB to support negative IDs successfully (http://omnimaga.org/oldsitetest/)

Yeah I saw earlier. Awesome :D. Are every post (besides the 230000+ duplicates or so) orderable correctly?

Also you messed up the skin at oldsite2. Some gradients are missing D:

This is how it should look like: http://djomni.57o9.org/oldboardmergedsmf/

I agree with DJ. If it's possible, I'd integrate them with the current board.

Suggestion Netham45: Add a word filter that censors omnimaga.unitedti.org to omnimaga.org/oldsite . This will fix all old screenshots in news articles. That link was down for 4 years so if it censors stuff in newer topics, then it won't matter much since the only time I ever used omnimaga.unitedti.org on the current site was to upload a realsound rickroll.

Ah ok, I was wondering what was the progress actually, such as if it seemed to work out well or if problems occured.

Also since you are merging, are you gonna allow people to set their theme settings to v5 retro? (I think v5 Retro should be the name)

v5 Retro is a good name.
Will v5 Retro be available only for the archives? Or for the active forums too?

I had no problems on a test site. I can let people set their theme settings, sure.

This is great.  Hopefully we can get this integrated, and have back a large portion of OmniHistory.

I think Netham's future plan was to have old posts have the retro theme on, but I think it should still be selectable for other topics as well for those who like it. That theme was for if the merge didn't happen.

As of now, it seems merging kinda works to a certain extent, but each sub-forum shows topics twice. X.x

So merging brings with it its own glitches and other 'legacy' bugs (?). And I really like the retro theme.

Well thankfully the merge shouldn't screw up the regular functionality of the board. It's mainly stuff like links in the quote titles that might not work in old threads and the simple fact there are threads with minus numbers. :P

Anyway it seems to be complete now and there are even some members who got their old posts assigned back! :D

Now the remaining to fix are:

-Fix Pre-Invisionfree news timestamps, then move them back to news. Reduce their IDs, if necessary.
-Move topics that are in the wrong categories (back then there were no computer help section, for example, so some comp help topics are in misc discussion). I'm in the process of doing so.
-Fix the charset issues. For some reasons, importing old posts here screwed up some accents in French/Pokémon threads and forum titles.
-Fix random database errors (like the one that just happened while I tried to post this)

Also the time offset being wrong needs to be fixed, but that's affecting the whole site in general.
And it seems alright then, from what you said. It'll just take a while to iron out the inconsistencies of such a big addition to the forums.
