Sub-domain?
« on: April 23, 2010, 06:15:49 pm »
I thought about doing like what Cemetech did for a while with Source Coder 2, and have a sub-domain redirect (not frame) to the Axe Parser sub-forum on Omnimaga. In Axe doc, you are linked directly, but for people who don't want to search for it without having to open the doc everytime, remember the URL by heart and can miss it in the long front page navbar/site navigation in general, it will be quite hard to remember the long URL that is http://www.omnimaga.org/index.php?board=71.0 . I myself had trouble remembering MaxCoderz forum URL back when Joe Pemberton hosted their forums.

Of course it wouldn't be a frame redirect, the URL would change back to the forum URL when opened, but I thought it would be much easier for Axe users who don't frequent Omnimaga often and use public computers/restricted computers to access axe.omnimaga.org instead of www.omnimaga.org/index.php?board=71.0

I won't set it up right now, though, because 1and1 admin panel is currently down (as always!).

Yeah, that would be nice.  I just have the omnimaga forums bookmarked and so its just a click away.  Not sure how many people would actually type that out though, unless it was really really short like "axeparser.com" or something.  But still, it would certainly look more official than the forum link.

(Ugh my internet died on my new computer, for some reasons, but is working fine here. I had to copy my post in a txt file and send it over this old machine and paste it here x.x -EDIT nvm, fixed, thanks to JonimusPrime)

it would be axe.omnimaga.org . I can't use a domain because it costs money and I'm not the one in charge of paying the bill (anymore).

What I think is that it may come handy mostly for people accessing the Axe sub-forum from school/library

if I wanted, I could actually even make this sub-forum have a different forum theme, like, for example, have the banner be changed to an Axe Parser logo modified to fit the site design and saying it's hosted at Omnimaga. However that would make updating the navigation bar a bigger chore since then I need to update it theme by theme and there are alerady five (unless there's a way for a theme to use another theme's files, but just a different banner). This is not to mention those who dislike the default theme would be stuck with it in the sub-forum. I'll see, though. It was a cool feature on some forums. I even seen a forum where the banner title was different in every sub-forum.

EDIT: Ok, does http://axe.omnimaga.org works for anyone? I was supposed to set this sub-domain as HTML redirect, but 1and1 won't accept "?" and "=" characters in redirect URLs, so I had to manually create an index.html redirect in a new folder and point the sub-domain name to that folder. It pretty much does the same thing, except I guess it will not work for people with redirect remover Firefox extension. I added a message and link in case someone is not redirected.

Nice redirect, DJ :)

"One can short of a six pack" is idiomatic for "retarded"/"stupid". Have you turned to the dark side, Builderboy?

x.x I don't think he meant it that way...
it also works for me. I wonder, do you want me to set up a php redirect instead? php is a little faster at redirecting in my experience.
