I think it could be possible to resize them and use grayscale, but in some cases it might not look good. Some would need to manually be converted and some stuff would be hard to see.
I think some pics could maybe even be kept at their original size, just cropped and modified a bit, because on 68K, a part of the screen is used by the TI-OS GUI, meaning the screen is like 77 pixels high and 160 wide. It could maybe use scrolling, although data would take a lot of space.
Maybe Casio Prizm?

this looks awesome! but will it have the rendering memory to do this, or even part of this? i mean at a certain point itd seem to be too much just graphics wise.... how do you plan to combat that?

Keep in mind the TI-89T has 2.7 MB of flash and that stuff can be run directly from archive. Myst is a graphical-intensive game, so it's obviously gonna be much larger than a tilemap-based game, but memory issues shouldn't be a big problem.

I have a lot of files, but I think the whole island might just fit on it.

That's good to hear. How large is a pic file by the way? (one that fills the whole TI-BASIC screen area)

It's 1547 bytes. But the picture converter makes them for the whole screen(so including the os part). But I cant see that extra part in graph so I will cut off those part later. Like that a file(full screen) is 2007 bytes. Basicly all my pics are still 'uncut'. But when I cut the partsof by each pic I will have again some extra bytes free.

Euh... I don't think so.
I think maximum 300 pics. I have on my calc about 250 pics at the moment.
This uses 452701 bytes 452701/2007=225,561
This is what sais on my calc. (All the pics are archived)
Ram free=180386
Flash rom free=159746

Oh ok, I was thinking about the TI-89 Titanium archive, which is in the high 2 MBs or something.

The lists work nicely
Basically the whole island is finished but I'm still missing a few pics, but I'll try to put them on my calc as fast as possible.
In-game-buttons don't work yet, but that a 'problem' for later
.
I must see still at some pics because they're quite unclear.
Maybe one of these day's I'll post a demo(I know that myst 89 will be a demo;only the one island, but you probably know what I mean, a demo where no in-game-buttons work)
But overall there's still quite some work

Alright. Here's a demo-demo of myst 89.
(Its a demo-demo because when it's complete its actually a demo still.)
Switches don't work in this demo.
Keys are f1 and arrows.
Have fun!

Very nice Stefan, it looks great, I love the screenshot, I think the game really gives the user the chance to do anything they want.

=DDD
the myst series is amaze, and i really like the way you're making it look with nothing but monochrome.
as for an 84+SE version, i think scrolling screens would be the best way to go. in fact, the later games in the myst series used scrolling in that fashion to give the illusion of 3 dimensions.
for any of you potential fangirls out there, the myst book series is a wonderful thing, and MO:UL is now online and, what's more, FREE.
nice work, SB!
