Title: Shadow Falls
Post by: DJ Omnimaga on August 05, 2005, 06:02:00 am
Shadow Falls is boolsoft's attempt to TI-68k RPGs, featuring beautiful graphics and a interesting story. This alpha version is very uncomplete; you can walk around an speak to people.

The fights are now included (in a not very advanced way, yet). All I can provide for the moment is this screenshot, which doesn't look that good (on my real V200, it looks better and doesn't flicker...)

// Edit: removed screenshot, see below for more infos

It looks very professional, especially the battle screen.

Say, does it use the ExtGraph tilemap engine?

wow thats the biggest screenshot I even seen *resizes in the GIMP for news article on front page* O_Oshocked2.gif

look very nice, while the overworld reminds me of FF1 the battles graphics reminds me of FF6 and the text boxes Chrono Trigger , I hope to see this co0mpleted soon :)smile.gif

Yes, most of the graphic aren't made by myself (some were ported from the FF series, some were fetched from RPG community sites (e.g. the fighting background)).

And no, it doesn't use the TileMap engine. Everything was developped by myself :)smile.gif

oh nice, you all wrote routines by yourself? Are most in C or are some in 68k ASM? I'll try to play the new demo and post the news article about AUra/Shadow Falls/Zelda soon but first I need to resize the above screenshot with the GIMP  to fit it in the frontpage :)smile.gif

1. I can send you a real 240x128 screenshot if you want.

2. They are all witten in C. The source will be avialable when the first public version is finished.

hmm nice, maybe you could send me a new screenshot 240x128 because now that I look at it my pentium II will not be able to handle the resizing  :crazy:fou.gif

Allright, this screenshot is 240x128 and has got a better quality than the one above. It is quite large, though.

OK, there is no new download available now, but I've just taken a screenshot of the enhanced battle engine. Other things I added:
 - Partially added 2nd city
 - Added another fighting background
 - Save/Load game at inns and at home
 - Enhanced menu

Perahps I will upload a beta (or just another alpha <_<dry.gif ) when these things are prooved to work and I added some other features I have in mind.

Oh, yeah, here's the screenshot:

look very awesome so far, the graphics are so sweet , do you take battle backgrounds from FFVI? I'll try to grab an emu and play it once a new version comes out :)smile.gif

how many characters per battles will there be?
Title: Shadow Falls
Post by: saubue on August 27, 2005, 06:44:00 am
I don't where the battle backgrounds are taken from, but I usually get them from RPG community sites like http://www.toolkitzone.com/ . Some of the gfx of those sites are ripped and some are done by poeple themself.

There will be 1-2 monsters and the main character. In the second chatper, you will probably able to fight with 2 characters... :)smile.gif

Anyway, I'm still thinking about including magic spells and elements so that fights won't get boring...

Saubue, you sure have increased your talents since TI Hex. Keep up the good work :thumb:google.gif

lol, I have spent a lot of time into TIGCC, C, C++ and C# indeed...

I also worked on TIHex after it was released and added a link feature that was almost stable  :)smile.gif, but I don't feel like releasing it at the moment anyway...

Shadow Falls is (I think) the 4th or 5th RPG I have started to develop and I never worked that long on a project yet (I also spent much time on PowerComPress, but not THAT0 much), so I hope that the first chapter will make it to a final release.

Are you "only" working on Ultima now?

where are the 3-4 other ones?
Title: Shadow Falls
Post by: saubue on September 09, 2005, 10:18:00 am
The first 2 were BASIC RPG projects named "Knight's Quest" and I planned them to be adaptions from a PSX game named "Guardian's Crusade"...

The other 2 were TIGCC RPG projects that wanted to port the BASIC projects - the second one is also the one I ported the map engine from (Currently, I have to slow it down so that the user can see the map properly...)

Shadow Falls my first RPG project that will have a story written by myself (the first and a part of the second chapter are already written), although the story will be influenced by other RPGs  ...slightly... ;)wink.gif

Yep... Ultima V steals all of my time. I have been working on it for about 1 year now (off and on). I also took a break to work on Astrosmash.

If all goes as planned, Ultima V should be ready by Summer 2006.

Next, I'll probably do Ultima IV Quest of the Avatar using the same engine. Ultima IV is alot less complicated. Ultima V has so much detail, it is really kind of amazing it is 18 years old.

In my opinion, http://www.ticalc.org/archives/files/fileinfo/379/37950.html appears to be worthy of featured program status. It is an amazing on calc compression utility complete with a grayscale Windows-like GUI. I believe Saubue has just raised the bar for calc programming.

Amazing!!! :ru13z:king2.gif You just keep getting better and better Saubue.

P.S. Don't forget about Shadow Falls ;)wink.gif

Title: Shadow Falls
Post by: saubue on December 14, 2005, 06:06:00 am
I'm afraid that there is not much progress at the moment, since I got a lot of other projects to work on.
But I haven't been lazy, either: I thought much about the magic stuff, and I think I've got some ideas for it.
Perhaps I will start working on it soon (I have already made the map for the first dungeon, but it's too large to fit in the RAM, so I'll have to split it - that was the point I stopped working ;)wink.gif )
Title: Shadow Falls
Post by: DJ Omnimaga on December 14, 2005, 06:12:00 am
ooh i see, do you know about compression utilities for maps? Maybe that would help.

on that note you just posted the 7000th post on the forum :Pblah.gif
Title: Shadow Falls
Post by: saubue on December 14, 2005, 06:37:00 am
Yihaa! :gift:party3.gif

I could compress it, but nevertheless I need to load it into the RAM to draw it. Its size is 70x70 (which makes 4900 bytes). Additionally, the graphics have to be loaded to: 20 (tiles) x 16 (height) x 2 (unsigned short) x 2 (grayscale!) = 1280 bytes.

The calc normally should be able to do that; double-buffering and other variables shouldn't take that much mem. But somehow, the calc crashes when I try to load the map :(sad.gif

BTW, you should all visit ticalc.org and vote for PowerComPress :psychedelic:happy0075.gif;)wink.gif
