Thanks for asking.
I would say that combat is 50% complete. Once combat is complete... the only thing that remains is tidying up a lot of little things.
I guess I should bump my overall progress to 80%.

Attacks are partially implemented along with the enemy AI. When magic is used during combat in the original Ultima V, the screen inverts in stages (see a screenshot of moongate travel) along with an eerie sound. And if it is a projectile (like the Magic Missile), then you will also see the projectile animation.
BTW: nice avatar xlibman.
"The enemy begins to fight back"
"They are ganging up on me. RUN!"

uber! This game has a somewhat different battle than most rpgs eh? Like a mini strategy game almost.

I'd say combat in Ultima are not unlike other rpgs. It may seem complicated initially but it's easy to get the hang of it. It's basically turned-based, move forward and attack.
One of the best things about Ultima is there is not any random encounter combat like FF. You see the enemy coming toward you.
Not to bad mouth FF, I've finished several of them myself, but I prefer this combat.

Be careful crossing bridges...
There could be trolls lurking around. If you are caught, the trolls will demand a toll. If you do not pay the toll... Well... someone is gonna get a butt whoopin'. Hopefully it will not be you! B)
Thanks for the comments guys!

Trolls can be somewhat civilized! And they love gold and weapons.
If you are victorious in battle with trolls, you will get some nice bounty!
