According to Athlor, Ultima: Dark Runes is not a remake.
I believe Athlor said that it is loosely based upon ideas within the Gameboy version of Ultima: Runes of Virtue. But, takes place between Ultima 3 and Ultima 4.

He was just glad, as am I, to see a new game with a new storyline come out in the franchise - remakes are just as good, especially for us that didn't get to experience the originals.
Don't think for a second that your efforts aren't appreciated!

No offense taken.
Sometimes I wish that I was creating an original game, then I would not be tied down to making it as close to something that already exists. I find myself being overly critical when I compare what I have done to what is already there.

Yes, I have a greyscale gfx set as well for the Cybiko and TI(?). I actually started this on the Cybiko but lost the source in the aformentioned HD crash. Regained the gfx set from the demo I did release.
I pondered doing a port of the U3 code for the Gameboy but I thought the code was too inefficient. I prefer to think of it as a real Ultima with some ROV elements. The full screen gfx area and pushing things puzzles in it are like ROV. But a story like the regular ones.
Timeline is like Ranman said. The land of Sosaria arose after U3 and UDR uses this world. I've read all available Ultima lore and intend on incorporated as much as feasable, even if it's just mentioning tidbits here and there.
From scratch has it's advantages but remaking has the advantage of structure. I've had blocks not having the structure lie before me.

Well, actually in Ultima V, all projectile attacks look the same regardless of the weapon. Think of it as a "marker" that shows the current position of the projectile's trajectory.
I chose to give every member of the party a Magic Bow because it has the longest range. Each of the 26 weapons its own range and attack value.
