PTTCopier v0.1
« on: December 08, 2012, 11:05:10 am »
Hello!

I had got some spare time today, so I tried hacking the PTT file restrictions (which was too easy, in my opinion). What this program does is it asks you to copy all your MyLib files over to Press-to-Test mode when the nSpire boots up into PTT. Here's my YT-video:

[ Invalid YouTube link ]

Download link: link removed

It runs on any nSpire handheld (as far as I know), but it only works with ndless v3.1.

THIS IS FOR DEMONSTRATION PURPOSES ONLY! DON'T CHEAT USING THIS! I AM NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR YOU GETTING CAUGHT!

I hope you guys like it!

EDIT: Zeda- Removed links.

Nice work, I always love seeing Nspires being hacked. However, 2 PTT killers were on a few months ago and both got pulled. You should probably remove the link.

It is way too easy.
The Nspire is not "secure" for standardized testing, whatever that means - it's just that testing authorities aren't aware of it enough ^^

Link removed in 3.. 2.. 1..

It's nice that someone else found this security hole as well :D
This just shows how bad the PTT mode is ;)

I agree. The best way for testing authorities to dispel cheating is to reset all memory, because the PTT is like paper.

For most models, yup... but not so for the Nspire Clickpad :)
An easy hardware modification enables thorough tampering with millions of production models, including (because it happened on prototypes, and the simple hardware modification makes production models equivalent to prototypes) permanent install of the CAS OS on the CAS-capable model sold as non-CAS.
The boot2, diags and OS could even be re-signed with unique third-party keys, in such a way that reformatting memory in the exam room and transferring a new OS (which should always have been done anyway, if cheating was taken even remotely seriously...) will render the calculator simply inoperative - and therefore, will render the exam unfair.

Yeah, I'm afraid PTT hacks might not be allowed on the forums, so you might want to remove that link.

Otherwise, why the protection is so weak I have no idea. If TI wants people to not cheat, they should strenghten the protection.

Good idea I think.

But there is still a problem with the video embedded in 1st post - the download link remains in its description.

Well, I guess at first they didn't "see" Ndless coming, and thus put the "simplest" protection that actually was enough when not having native code possibility.
But then, they never took the time to redo it when Ndless first came out (a while ago)
