Hmm, I am not good with sprites, but one piece of advice I have is not to get hung up on sprites! I typically make graphics my last priority. Once the game is mostly done and playable, then you should add in the graphics

use a simple sprite for testing? ie a 8x8 block and for enemu's an 8x8 black block and ...?

since I'm busy with school and also other projects I started before this one, I'm nearly sure that I should abort this project, at least as a contest entry.

Well, IMO competitions aren't about winning or even participating, it is more to motivate the people to program, which was in your case a success!
