If you are still open for trying out water physics, you could always use some type of cellular automata as detailed in a Physics Post I made a while back.

I did that for trying, but it didn't allow for gravity, so I went with what I have right now instead.

EDIT : to clarify, I wanted objects to be able to have an effect on the particles with real-looking gravity and motion, so I couldn't use cellular automatas.

Bump,

Due to the lack of time resulting of unexpected IRL complications, I won't do what I originally planned, but I'll try at least to submit some sort of a sandbox.

I don't think so unfortunately. I already have too many projects.

So, I've decided to make some sort of advanced powdertoy, with different possible cells : solid (real physics are applied on it), liquid (fall or go on the left/right, no physics) and if I success at it, gas (you'll see ;) ). You'll be able to draw the environment the cells will live in, freely add cells to this environment, and influence them. There is no real goal but you can do what you want with little pixels :P

Update !

I've done all the engine and physics :D now you can mix solid, liquid and gas in the same session !

<the gray looks better on-calc of course>

What do you think of the way I handle gas ? Does it actually look like gas ?

Don't gasses always move around?
That's how it works in the other powder sims.

Also, are you going to have elements or is it just types of matter?

I don't see gas as constantly moving ...

It's just types of matter. Single pixels are the best ;D

OK. but I'm pretty sure gasses are always flowing around. Solids are static, liquid flows, gas flies.
Or am I just horribly wrong here?

It depends on gasses. There are heavy and light gasses. I choose to use a gas which has exactly the right weight to float and stay motionless ;D

Haha. Ok. I'd suggest adding things like lasers or bouncy particles though. Anything to add variety.

Lasers ? Not sure why but hem -_o

Of course I planned to add things, but more like fans and bombs to blow particles away, this kind of things.
