Title: [Dead Project] Mario game [83+][APP]
Post by: tr1p1ea on October 09, 2014, 09:07:15 am

Hi All,

Its sad to announce that due to a HDD crash and backup failures that the code for this dormant project (like really dormant) has been lost forever. It really sucks as I did want to finish it one day, or at least make some more levels etc :(. It featured 4lvl grayscale, smooth scrolling, animated tiles and enemies and a small shell puzzle for starters (there was even a version with sound, but not this one).

Anyways a small miracle in the fact that I found a calc with a test build of a level on it - So im uploading it if anyone wants to try:

www.tr1p1ea.net/files/Mario_tr1p1ea.8xk (http://www.tr1p1ea.net/files/Mario_tr1p1ea.8xk)

Controls:
Move - Arrows
Jump - 2nd

Some screenies:
(http://img.ourl.ca/mario0.gif) (http://img.ourl.ca/mario1.gif)
(http://img.ourl.ca/mario2.gif) (http://img.ourl.ca/mario3.gif)

Note that the collision detection is off and the grayscale is set to a test mode so its bad. Oh yeah, I think the file is at least 7 years old!

I remember this project and was sad when this died. By the way does the data loss you refer to mean the 2006 data loss or did you have another recently? I hope you didn't lose anything else such as xLIBC source and the 3D stuff D:

Maybe you could try to disassemble the source of this Mario game if that's possible? If that game was revived, cliffs and walls you can jump from or climb could be implemented to give more levels variety?

On an off-topic note, your avatar is broken :P

I'm a relatively new calculator programmer so this is my first time seeing this project, but I'm still really sad that its dead. It looks like it was really incredible :(

I remember seeing this on maxcoderz. I always reminded me of Mario RPG. It's really sad to see that the source is lost forever. :(

From those screenies this is looking awesome - too bad that it is gone!
Maybe you can reverse-engineer the binary?

Yeah IIRC it was meant to be a mix of Mario RPG and Super Mario Bros. Basically, it would be action like Zelda, with platform elements from Mario, but with RPG elements incorporated in the game.

I really need to give the demo a try at one point. Do you think we could reuse the graphics if we ever decide to redo a game based on this, even if it's not for the 84+?
Maybe you can reverse-engineer the binary?
Yeah that's what I was wondering too, especially that this is how gbc4nspire got revived then ported to the CX. You lose all your comments and label names, though, so the code can become very hard to read, especially if it was ASM written half a decade ago.

I was hoping that "dead project" mean you were releasing the source to it, it's sad to hear that the source was lost forever! I also remember being amazed by this over at MC years ago. In other news, the Metroid source was recovered not that long ago, so maybe now that this project is officially dead Metroid could be brought back from the dead ;)

Well... that's unless it's a more recent computer crash that he went through and that even the recovered copy of Metroid source was lost too. I remember he said somewhere that he recovered select projects but I forgot which ones and that's unless this topic announcment talks about yet another (and 3rd) hard drive crash.

That sucks D:, this is why it's best to have backups on multiple storage mediums

That really sucks, i hope you can at least find a copy of Metroid somewhere. And i'm sure it was more than calc stuff you lost, sorry to hear :/
