Title: An Exercise In Futility [Contest Entry]
Post by: LincolnB on December 11, 2011, 08:46:07 pm
Spoiler For Original Post:

For Cemetech's contest #8, I'm going to make a platform game. It'll be 8*8, with a scrolling tilemap, and I have a whole bunch of ideas (none of which are yet implemented). So it's still in more of the brainstorming phase, but I wrote the collisions and movement engine the other day.

http://img.removedfromgame.com/imgs/vector.gif (http://img.removedfromgame.com/imgs/vector.gif)

For those of you who recognized it, it's the same engine I posted in saintrunner's Seeker thread :) I loved it so much I decided I'm going to make a game out of it! I'll try and get a tilemapping/scrolling example set up during physics tommorrow, and hopefully get a screenie posted.

Spoiler For Previous Update, with screenshot:

UPDATE:

Revamped the graphics, and threw out that weird jumping bean looking character. I think I like the new look :)

UPDATE:

I've changed the focus / vision for the game to a Survival type of game. Basically, the goal is to survive as long as you can through different conditions, as things get progressively harder. I have five different modes working, I might be able to get a new screenie later. Also, I've officially changed the title.

UPDATE(a):

Screenshot, featuring different modes - next up to do is set up the obstacles. The way the obstacles are going to work is that it's going to have a classic arcade game (like pong) playing in the background automatically, and you have to avoid the ball and paddle. Stuff like that.

FINAL UPDATE:

I finished this game the other night. Not much explaining I'm afraid, but I'm working on a fairly in-depth Readme.txt for when I'm allowed to release this. I made a few screenies for your viewing pleasure.

http://img.removedfromgame.com/imgs/Screenshot_Five.gif (http://img.removedfromgame.com/imgs/Screenshot_Five.gif)

Aaaand the grey looks a lot better on calc. I was trying to make the screenies realistic but I couldn't get it quite good enough.

EDIT: Got a screenie with better gray:

Ah, why not use that program since you already took the time to make it :P

Looking forward to see what this game will be about.

Sounds fun :D Good luck in the contest >:D

Thanks lol I'm going to need it.

Looking forward to see what this game will be about.

Expect a cross between an adventure game, hence the 8*8 scrolling stuff, and a puzzle platformer, hence the entry into contest 8 :)

You can't provide a download remember?

Oh right, thanks for the reminder.

Cemetech won't allow you to ever post a download if you participate?

Nope. You should wait till the deadline.

K, I spent some time during school today getting a tilemap up and running, polishing up the physics engine, and making a new sprite - a little jumping bean looking thing.

This level is seriously ugly - expect better graphics, this is just a demo.

For something you call ugly, I think it actually looks kind of nice.  Great job on it!

I was bored, so I spent the last hour or so making some mockups for a potential menu screen.

EDIT: Made it a little bigger

lol I totally ripped off graviter :) is that what you're referring to?

Okay, I've changed the art style, and I've changed the focus of the game, which was always a little flaky before. Update in the first post, again.

you should make it so the user can choose which 'character' to use! lol I'd be playin' as the jumping bean all the time :)

Haha on the first post, when I mentioned modes, what that is is pretty much different graphics styles, like your character sprite changes, and all the tiles take on a different shape. There's a retro graphics mode, and your character has a cool tail looking thing (slightly different from the screenie in the first post, I changed it to look less like a blatant Graviter rip off), there's a smiley face mode, where you have a bunch of little black smiley faces that follow you around (you can throw them), there's a zero-gravity mode, meant to simulate outer space, there's a jumping bean - type mode, and the final mode is a reverse gravity mode, and you turn into a space ship.

Yeah, it's a little weird :) Should be fun, tho. (I hope)

Okay, I have a nice 4-scale menu screen up and running, but I'm on vacation right now, so I can't post any screenies yet.

O.O
maybe put images in [img] tags?

also, I see it is an app. how big is it when compiled normally?

also, looks AMAZING. keep up the good work. :D

EDIT: and is the munu that slow on calc?

Hm, so it's kind of like part-simul,part-graviter/sandland....interesting..I'm impressed as to how many game elements you managed to fit in....you've got the bullet/arrays along with what looks like tile masking and/or intelligent collision checks, etc. Nice job.

So will these different modes aid in solving levels/puzzles?
EDIT: Just saw the screenies. Never mind.

Thanks! and no, the menu's a little faster on-calc. I'm releasing it as an app or as a 1450(ish) byte program. Also, I didn't put it in img tags to prevent browser lag...wouldn't have made much difference but whatev.

Thanks! Haha well that's kind of funny because I took heavy inspiration from those three games. All the collisions are completely pixel based, so I didn't "need" the tilemap, per se, it is entirely dependent on pxl-test() commands.

How do you run the game????

In WabbitEmu it freezes on launch (using Doors CS btw)

EDIT: Nvm, apparently it only runs on real hardware... O.O

Yeah, I've gotten reports of it crashing on emulators.

Do you use Fullrene ? Programs with Fullrene crash on Wabbit (at least on my computer) while they run on my calc.

I love this game!!!
except for the one minigame where the spinny thing follows you around. :P
I haven't been able to get past it yet.

EDIT: oh, you are supposed to shoot them! XD

Yeah, it uses Fullrene.

And haha thanks Parser and nxtboyIII, but parser if you had read the readme you would have known how to play ;)

nxtboy, I made the title screen based off of Builderboy's flame tutorial (if you search it I'm sure you'll find it)

and they called you sadistic >:D

but anyway, I tested this out, and it's pretty great, but I have a question...
The readme mentions a 'gun mode', but I haven't been able to find that anywhere.

It's also a zero-gravity mode, if you go to the training room and press F3 you'll see it.
