Control Scheme
« on: March 20, 2011, 08:00:55 pm »
For my Homescreen Game Pack, I have been thinking about changing the controls a little.  Here's a brief description of each option:

Option one:
This would be what I have now.  The controls to pause move around, but are generally [2nd] or [Enter], with the same keys unpause.
[2nd] and [Enter] can both be used from the main menu to select games.

Option two:
Switch the key to pause to [Mode], with [Enter] to unpause.
Make all gameplay (in game) controlled with [2nd] and all game selection (main menu) with [Enter].

Option three:
Switch the key to pause to [Mode], with [Mode] to unpause.
Make all gameplay (in game) controlled with [2nd] and all game selection (main menu) with [Enter].

Read before voting:
I could also make it so the user can map his or her own keys.  This wouldn't be very hard, but it could cause some very slight slowdowns.  (If you want this, just don't vote, as well as if you want a combination of options.)

Thanks for voting! :D  Please post any questions, comments, or other suggestions you have. :)

I chose option 3. It's probably the easiest for someone not used to this to learn the controls. However, I think 2nd and Enter should both be used from the main menu. (So, kind of both option 1 and 3).

The reason that I'm trying to shy away from [2nd] and [Enter] doing the same thing is to avoid things like the end of Box Mover or Tap Forever; you die, instantly exit the game, look down at the calc, and are left wondering what happened (especially in the case of Tap Forever). ;)

Thanks for the input so far. :D

Okay, I see. I guess using [Enter] will be fine for game selection.  :D

I prefer pause and unpause to be the same, as long as you don't have to worry about holding it down too long, and it flashes on and off.

How about have mode to pause and unpause, and have 2nd for ingame, and both second and enter to select in the menu?  I see no reason to remove 2nd from menu selection, and I also find a lot of people new to games tend towards enter for selection because of the TiOS menu's :P

Tan to pause, 8 to unpause, 7 to move right, 2nd to move left and ON to confirm/action.

j/k I choose option 3. It seems more standard.
