Flappy Bird Color: An Homage for the TI-84 Plus C Silver Edition
« on: February 13, 2014, 03:27:25 am »
I think I was one of the last people on the Internet to hear about the stupendously popular smartphone game "Flappy Bird", since I shy away from casual gaming. However, when even a monochrome calculator version appeared in our archive queue, it became clear that the game has completely saturated the collective Internet consciousness. It was with some reluctance that I realized sooner or later it would have to reach the color-screen TI-84 Plus C Silver Edition, so it is with rather mixed feelings that I present Flappy Bird Color, an homage to the original game.

What made the original such an overnight success? The concept is not a new one; tunnel/helicopter/jetpack games have been a staple of casual gaming for decades, as evidenced by the folder full of such games for the monochrome TI-83 Plus/TI-84 Plus. The gameplay is not outstanding, and even the art more than heavily evokes Mario, complete with replicas of warp pipes. Nevertheless, through a combination of addicting frustration and word-of-mouth, it has achieved great notoriety. You pilot a bird through a narrow tunnel of pipe-like obstacles, telling the bird when to fly upwards and when to fall with gravity. Although the concept is simple, playing the game is table-poundingly annoying. While I tried to make this game equally frustrating to pay tribute to its inspiration, please don't smash or damage your calculator, as there are plenty of less frustrating things you could be using your calculator for. Flappy Bird Color requires Doors CSE 8.0 or higher. Please see the Readme for more information and disclaimers, and I apologize in advance for the time that you'll waste playing this game.

Very nice Kerm. I know some people here were discussing how nice it would be to have a colour version of this, so I'm sure they'll be thrilled. I'm not familiar with the title myself aside from hearing about it here. I can't really tell from the screenshot, but I hope it has decent speed on calc. :D I should break out the 84+CSE and give it a try sometime.

That's awesome Kerm, good job! I especially like how identical to the iPhone that is  ;D

Spoiler For Just a suggestion...:
If you based the physics in your game off of the screenshot for mine, I want to let you know about a mistake I made.

My mistake:

What I fixed it to:

The bird jumps up instead of accelerating up. It's really not a big deal at all, I just didn't want to mislead you.

Thanks, guys! Yes, I'd say the speed is more than decent on-calculator, especially considering that it's BASIC. I've updated the physics based on feedback from some people who have played the actual smartphone game, so if you already grabbed it, feel free to update.

now that's why xLIBC needs the ability to change the two GRAM offsets so that side scrolling games requires less code to scroll around and run faster.

But yeah good job on this clone. It seems to be the closest to iPhone in terms of look. Hopefully the speed still keeps some of the original version's challenge. :)

Great job Kerm!
hybrid TI-BASIC actually

Thanks! And I must give credit to DJ_O for his reference code that helped me to understand how flipping buffers could be used to make a sidescrolling xLIBC game in the first place.

Edit: A video of the game in action:

Yeah I really had serious troubles trying to pull off a side-scrolling engine using xLIB because of how buffers kept flipping or how drawing was restricted to half of the screen at a time. It was a serious hassle really, although I managed to get a decent speed from my Tunnel. I never figured out how to get rid of the flicker, though. In case tr1p1ea added a way to make such game easier, I decided to wait a bit before continuing my Supersonic Ball CSE port. :P

Also from the vid it seems pretty fun, and lol I see you kept the flashing animation from the Tunnel XD. I will download this pretty soon. :)

Yes, I thought the flashing animation method you came up with was sufficiently jarring to further frustrate people who just lost the game. :) It fits very nicely there, especially flashing at that fast speed.

Btw, for that game, do you use tilemaps of some sort or do you generate pipes on the fly? I didn't have time to look at the code sadly. I am curious since I might eventually try to make an HP Prime Flappy Bird clone if no one beats me to it. I might change some stuff, though.

I was actually thinking of making a smooth scrolling version in asm, but do the emulators support LCD driver scrolling?

if you mean z-address screen shifting, then yes. (This is what this version of Flappy Bird uses)

Thats awesome. Sadly I won't be able to get this to the 2 people in my math class that have the color edition. Still great job from the gifs! Not sure how you did it, but wow!

My Flappy Bird port!
Give me ideas for games plz :3
I overuse :3 :3

Lolwut? XD http://www.ticalc.org/archives/files/fileinfo/458/45873.html

Actually I like the messages at the end. Don't bother making an ASM version with such messages, though, because nobody will ever see any of the messages past the 1st pipe since the game would be so hard :P
