Well, once again I am trying to do something. And once again I come to you without a demo, without a screenshot; I barely have any idea what this is at this point. But I don't want to just let this die, so I'm finally declaring it: this is a game I'm working on.
I'll have a trailer soon. I just need to decide on whether or not to use Omnicalc with it so it can have a theme song.

So I don't want to release too many details, because I've been known to quickly demotivate myself on large scale things. Like this. I want to build a little bit of hype though, so I'll release little bits of information over time.

CLUE: "Every hero has a story..."

Did that make any sense? :)

Don,t give up!

Anyone looking for a connection with that line to something that already exists is wrong. For all practical purposes, I made it up myself in this case.

CLUE: I get questions asked about this game frequently.

Not really, but that's the best clue I'm ever gonna give. Seriously. You can figure it all out from here now, if you know where to look. Let the hunt begin!

You know, maybe you could work on this with another staff member, It's eaiser to be motivated when you have a partner pestering you. ^_^ Just a thought...
*EDIT*Every rose has a thorn (I think?) necro, the song isnt guns and roses, it might be poison... not entirely sure . It's one of those hair bands that was obsessed with power ballads. ;)

I actually already have a group of about three others helping me with the project (though I'm the only one that has any idea what's happening, has any motivation, and knows TI-Basic decently). But I could always let someone else join my programming team, maybe :P

Ok I'm gonna take a crack at this... erm.. the story of a hero who starts off working at a japanese starbucks at minimum wage and ends up discorvering his boss is a mobster who is trying to exploit the prime minister by monopolizing the coffe market and selling his moca to the highest bidder thus ruining the japanese economy and causing mass panic and disaster.
Am I on track here?

CLUE: My last clue was an anagram...

Whatever apex is, I don't think I enjoy it...
Progress (sort of): Yesterday I made my programming team's logo and a program to display it!  I spend too much time messing with parametric graphs.

CLUE: The anagram I gave is a name.
There, I said it. I expect someone to figure it out before I get home from school in twelve hours (yay for extended afterschool clubs...)

The name is of a real person, still alive. Last clue on the subject...

CLUE: The person whose name was anagrammed in another clue created a very successful video game.

if only i knew what is an anagram...
Title: L
Post by: Liazon on January 09, 2008, 08:52:00 pm
basically when you rearrange letters to get another word.  like "mister" is an anagram of "timers" and "merits"

so it's basically just that the letters of the anagram can be rearranged to form a new word or phrase.

like in Harry Potter. Tom Marvollo Riddle => "I am Lord Voldemort." iirc

If you listen to the radio, you enjoy apex every day. It was the predecessor to FM radio. It was called VHF Radio, the AM equivalent of the FM type system. It had a high frequency with amplitude modulation, where as the FM system had a high amplitude with a high frequency modulation, if I remember correctly.

I don't remember the finer points of radio signals, but I studied it for a while, I wanted to mess around with wireless networking.

What I do remember is with AM you had the same frequency, you just increased and decreased the juice to create the sound, and with FM you had the same juice, you just turned it on and off at certain rates to make the sound. Something like that.

I can't wait to see what you are cooking up. I still can't figure out the clues.  ^_^

Oh, plus the apex of the sun is high noon, so if you enjoy mid-day then you enjoy apex as well.  :P

i still cant find it ;.;

I have a little clue because you said you get asked lot of questions about this game frequently and I guess it must be the game you like a lot but i cant find the person name anywhere ;.;

EDIT: If it's another game then I have no more clues ;.;

Not exactly the interpretation of that clue that I was going for, so I'll make it easier (please, someone get the connection soon!)

CLUE: People frequently ask questions about this game.
Title: L
Post by: Delnar_Ersike on January 12, 2008, 10:55:00 pm
The anagram is either an author to a successful Japanese game and/or franchise (ie. Mario, Metroid, Final Fantasy, etc.), or the author of a successful calc game. I don't know much about either, though I suspect it is the former.

As for the frequently ask questions about this game thing, methinks it has to do with a game FAQ. Anyone know any popular FAQ's about successful games that are headed by a Japanese dude?

Edit: I just noticed that this is the first thread to receive the status "hot". Not that it matters...

I give up on the anagram now x.x

It could be a game i never heard of or a game that I never played since i dont pay much attention to the gaming world ;.;

Is it a game that, when playing, people in the game frequently ask you questions? Is that what you were trying to get at?
Title: L
Post by: Radical Pi on January 13, 2008, 12:47:00 pm
No; that clue's purpose was to direct you to the website that would make reference to the letter L, which is directly connected to the unscrambled anagram when you look at "L" in the right way. Delnar_Ersike is probably the closest then, with his last post. So close that no one can see it...

lol, so this is going to be a clone of a classic? or a clone of another of his games? blubb-blubb lol... I could be wrong though, it could be coincidence that this guy's name fits the anagram, but the other oddities are too convincing.

Title: L
Post by: Radical Pi on January 13, 2008, 11:02:00 pm
Liazon's got it for the most part, congrats to him!
The anagram was of Alexey Pajitnov, creator of the world famous Tetris.

I'm sure it isn't much of a surprise that I LOVE platformers. My attempts at a Super Mario remake (that I've just about disbanded for now, sorry VBSMB fans!), my still strong obsession with JC's PixelMan game (the original glitchy version that no one can beat except me ^.^), the several hours I've logged on old SMB games newly released to the Wii's virtual console... I'm a platformer nerd.
Thus it wasn't long until I wanted yet again to take my chances at making another platformer, but this time a completely original one.
Also, around this time, I was active on the forums of gameFAQs.com, a site for Frequently Asked Questions on games. And it just happened to be the time that the site was hosting its Sixth Annual Character Battle: every day another batch of popular video game characters is put in a poll to move to the next round. It was expected that Link would win yet again... but somehow, a small yet well known character managed to take first place: the L-Block from Tetris!

Every hero indeed has a story. Soon you shall all witness the epic story of L-Block - platformer style...
Title: L
Post by: TIfanx1999 on January 13, 2008, 11:16:00 pm
So let me get this straight... you're making a platform game (IE mario style) using the "L" block from tetris? LMAO, that has to be the most absurd (yet intriguing) idea I have heard in a long time. Defintley looking foward to seeing what type of obstacles and enimies "L" will have to overcome in his(or her?, its?) adventures.
Title: L
Post by: Radical Pi on January 13, 2008, 11:29:00 pm
I'm looking forward to it too. Part of the fun will be taking aspects of Tetris and transmorphing them for this game. Disappearing platforms, anyone?

And just for simplicity, L-Block will be a he.

sounds interesting. i would not have thought to put tetris and mario together. i guess someone made pac attack on hte n64 which was tetris and pacman so putting 2 unlike retro games together to get something else isnt impossible. i look foward to this game

That's the exact kind of thing i was thinking :). Disappearing platforms, Blocks that can fall from the sky and crush you, false platforms that drop out underneath you ect. This definitley has some interesting possibilities.
*edit* This made me remember the episode of captin n the game master when they went to tetris land. ^_^

I hadn't thought of some of those, but they sound too good to not consider!

The only thing that I'm struggling for some creativity with is powerups. I could take the easy way out and make the powerups turn you into the other 6 tetris pieces, but that's just boring.
Title: L
Post by: TIfanx1999 on January 14, 2008, 01:55:00 pm
Why not have some of the power ups Be some of the other tetris pieces. IE- you have a limited number of blocks you can hold and you can stack the blocks on top of eachother (or side by side) to reach areas that would other wise be inacessable . In some cases you could have two seprate paths... each that would require differnt variety of blocks to get to the said path so that you would have to choose which blocks to take with you depending upon which path you want to take.
Title: L
Post by: Radical Pi on January 14, 2008, 05:13:00 pm
Nonlinearity... I'm definitely gonna try to have plenty of that. But, stacking blocks? Come on, this isn't Blockdude :P

Then again, there could probably be some kind of "Tetris Rain" powerup/attack.

Post by: TIfanx1999 on January 14, 2008, 08:20:00 pm
I realize the similarity, but block dude is kind of boring and well... not really a platformer. :) I didn't mean it to be as one dimensional as block dude either so allow me to elaborate. You would have a limited number of blocks that you can carry in your inventory. It would be used to allow you to take a path full of enemies vs. one full of obstacles one or the other(or possibly even a 1-up that is out of reach) . That's what I was trying to get at.  They could also be used for crossing large chasm,as platforms themselves . IE, you have a large gap to cross so you have to ditch some blocks in favor of others (ones that would span a larger distance). Perhaps the blocks dissappear after a short time period, meaning if you have a large chasm and enimies in the way you will have to move quickly in order to avoid falling to your death. If you don't like the placement of the blocks you can pick them up(provided they are on solid ground) and put them back in your inventory, but that wont reset the amount of time they have left before they dissappear. Blocks can remain in invertory as long as you like and they will not dissappear. Perhaps some blocks could also be used as projectiles to destroy enimies, and they could dissappear upon impact.

Post by: Radical Pi on January 14, 2008, 08:52:00 pm
Perhaps I might do something like that, but for now I'm just gonna try the basics.

And DJ Omnimaga, I'm probably going to be the main reporter of progress. The others aren't internet nerds like me :P
