Title: Midnight
Post by: ztrumpet on May 07, 2011, 10:10:32 pm
Midnight:

This is a game I started for the fourth Cage Match (the Swarm).  I hit a snag and stopped working on it for a while, but it's back on track.  I'm not going to provide too many details, as I want it to be a little surprising, but I show some of it in the screenie:

Highlights of the screenie:
Metroid Pi style graphics.
Elmgon style movement, with bullets that move at 1:1 based on the character/enemies.
I'm working on a grappling hook to grab boxes and move them around right now - it's partially shown in the screenie.
There are some other things as well.

I have no idea when it'll be released, as progress is slow with my current schedule.  It'll fit in RAM when done, but it's going to be a little large.  I believe there will be 25 rooms and 4 bosses when finished.

Let me know what you think! ;D

Edit: This is for the 83+/84(SE) series, and programmed in TI Basic. :)

Whoa, I had/have a TI-BASIC named Midnight with a title screen that looks virtually identical. It's just missing the "Zachary Tuller" bit.

...which is so good because I had lots of practice with Basic before Axe came out.  I also learned a lot from Builderboy and various other sources.

It was an Illusiat style RPG.

It got a bit farther than this screenshot (such as a working battle engine, etc..), but your version looks even better.

Unfortunately not. It's kind of been taken over by my unannounced Correlation project, which is even better (even the pure BASIC parts ;))

Still, I can't wait to try your program. Exodus was awesome.

the speed? Exodus was somewhat slower than this :P
I was thinking about
1) the platformer gameplay
2) the nice, simple graphics
3) a laser weapon :D

Yes.

No.

For the record, the grappling hook shoots in eight directions, as it's controlled with the number pad.

Awesome, I still don't get it how you make this things in Basic.

Whenever I see quotes like this, I kind of feel sad that new generations growing with Axe don't know much about the BASIC programming and the speed it can achieve if programmed correctly :(

Back on topic tho

Another freaking awesome game ztrumpet!! Is there some kind of puzzle involved in this game, or will it be more towards fighting the bosses?

Nah, just one per room, as just one enemy slows it down a lot, but the bosses will be pretty foreboding... hopefully. ;)

THis looks nice Z, nice use of the dual layer ASCII trick. IS the screenshot running at 6 MHz by the way? Because it seems the character movement is a bit slow, although it might be the screenshot running slower for some reasons. Map loading is incredibly fast.

It also reminds me of Metroid style.

I hope you finish this, Elmgon and the others.

Nope, that's the speed it runs at. ;)  It's a little slow, but I think it's justified when an enemy is going around the screen, along with a bullet.  So, yeah, it's already at 15 mhz.
I hope you finish this, Elmgon and the others.
I will. :)  The problem with Elmgon is it's so large that I need a "clean" calc to work on it. :-\

Aah ok, so I guess it will be SE-only?
Midnight could be for speed sake.
As for Elmgon, I like to have no "extra" files on my calc when I'm working on it due to it's huge nature.  It'll like end a bit larger than an 83+'s mem though. :-\

how are enemy movement coded? randomized? does it follow certain pattern?
Metroid Pi style:
They have lists and follow along those for movement.

I have some more progress to announce.  I got my grappling hook system to work!

Screenie info:
Note that my Wabbit settings are a little strange; it flickers much less on the actual calc.
Use the Num Pad to shoot the grappling hook.
It'll stop if it hits a wall, a room exit, an enemy, or even a bullet.
This can be used to trap enemies.
Note that I don't have the engine in the main menu code, so there's no way for it to launch the main menu. ;)
Not shown: If you go out of the room and you are caring a block, it goes back to the room it came from, as rooms are Zelda-esq and reset upon leaving them.
(Edit) Oh, and I forgot to mention that it pauses because I hit a wrong key in Wabbit (it's a debugging thing I have in there).

Let me know what you think, oh, and this system only took about 800 bytes of code.  Don't you love Basic's size? ;D

It's what I'm calling (based off of Super Mario Sunshine) what happens if you dive to the ground upon pressing down. Basically you go towards the bottom of the screen really fast, which can be used to break certain blocks.

Yeah I got the habit to do that now lol. Sometimes I do it with some other people, but not as much as they did on CalcGames.org forums in 2003, because there are so many people starting with the same letter.

Also I hope you continue working on this. This is epic use of dual-layer ASCII.

You have no idea how much this means, coming from you.  I still remember the first night I played Portal on the 83+ my sister now uses.  You've inspired this project more than you know as well.  Thanks. :)

Project Update!

My ground pound system finally works.  It doesn't take much code (~400 bytes), but it took a lot of work to code.  There were an incredible number of bugs to overcome, but that just makes the fact that it works even more awesome. ;)

It's normal dual layering.  The character sprite isn't however, as it's just an X with additional stuff. ;)
This being said, soon I'm going to add something else to the maps that will not be normal dual layer.  I'm not going to say what it is yet... ^-^

Hmm, that's an interesting idea.  I suppose I could, but it would cause a lot more flicker when you ground pound something.  It's an interesting idea, and I'll have to think about it towards the end of this project to see if I'll even have room for it...

I believe you are also participating with this in zContest, right?
That's the plan. :D  I'm actually aiming for a release around Thanksgiving (like Exodus last year), but since this was also the deadline for zContest I figured why not. ;)

Dual-layer ASCII, where you draw one character on the graph screen and draw another character on top of it. You can make some very decent graphics that way.

Yay moving platforms :D Do they move up and down or side to side?
Side to side.
Actually, I'll give you guys a screenie tonight...

O.O Awesome! Keep up the great work!

I like it more and more Ztrumpet. I really like those sprites too and I love how you got moving platforms in TI-BASIC.

Now that Marching season's over (Band) I have enough time to make some serious progress on this.  Expect a screenie of the first boss either tonight or tomorrow night.

First Boss Battle:
This boss fight occurs before you can shoot, fire the grappling hook, or ground pound.  Basically you can't do anything more than run around.  Due to this fact, you have to find a way to defeat the enemy with its surroundings.
I've yet to add the "cutscenes"/text around both ends of the fight, so note that the final version of this won't be so quick to jump into a boss fight.  Also note that I didn't redraw the icons in the HUD after the fight; I figured I could show you guys a screenie tonight or do that, and I chose to make this project update.

Let me know what you think - as always, feedback is greatly appreciated.

Funny thing -- the pi character really does look sinister XD Too bad you can't turn it around.

Anyway, awesome screenie as always. I love that flashing HUD effect :D

My progress this weekend has been concentrated on a lot of things.  In doing so, Midnight keeps getting bigger and bigger.  I'm hoping to include a secret boss, but it'll be the thing that's cut if I run out of room.  :-\

Here are the biggest areas of progress for the weekend:
 - Integrating the Main Menu code with the rest of the engine
 - Making Saving and Loading a reality
 - Adding the capsule collection code (A huge thank you to Runer and calc84 for the equation so I could compress all that data)
 - Making the Acid actually hurt you
 - Adding a test system
 - Adding a keypress hook system
 - Writing the opening cutscene

With all of these changes, there's a lot different.  Because of this, I decided to give you guys two screenies this time instead of one.  On top of that, the first one also shows the size of all the components of the game right now; keep in mind that I'll be combining all of those programs into just one for the final release.
Thanks for being interested. :D

I am 95% sure that I'll have the game finished for zContest; expect a release on Tuesday.

Things are progressing smoothly.  The only disheartening thing is that I vastly underestimated the size all my little cutscenes and dialogue take - they will likely be about 25% of the size of the game when done and I only estimated them to take 10% to 15% of the space.  Because of this, I'm going to have to scrap the optional boss fight that I was going to add in and just make the final boss even more epic.  I think.  There may be room for the 5th boss, but I doubt it, as I don't think I can optimize the game that much.

The third boss is done, but I'm not going to give you guys a screenie because I want the second half of the game to be a surprise to each and every one of you.  Though I don't find it the most epic boss fight from a gameplay perspective, it might be from an emotional one.  Who said calc games couldn't have storylines?!

Release is in 2 days.  O.O

Well, I have some good news, some bad news, and some ugly news:

Good:  I found a way to make the program fit in RAM (I think).

Bad:  In order to do so, I have to eliminate 4 rooms.

Ugly:  Some of these rooms were already "finalized."

Because of this, the total room count will now be 21 and the total cargo capsule count will be 20.
Title: Re: Midnight

And did I mention I can't wait to play this game? :D

O.O Oh wow, this games gotten pretty big. If you don't mind using an ASM program both Iambian (XCOPY) and Xeda (dont remember prog. name) have released utilities that let you copy stuff from archive. You could always try some kind of compression as well...
Title: Re: Midnight

As far as I know, you're allowed to use little bit of asm program for TI-BASIC section.

Yes, but I don't want to resort to this. ;)

Edit:
I may make two versions of this, one with a helper program, and one that takes about 22000 bytes of RAM, but is Pure Basic.
Title: Re: Midnight
Post by: ztrumpet on November 29, 2011, 11:26:39 pm
Well, I tried, and I failed.  It's too big for RAM.
Instillation will look like this:

Unfortunately, there won't be a beta release for another 16-or-so hours, as I just was able to throw everything together after fighting the reading from Archive programs before finally settling on Xcopy.  Because of this I haven't been able to playthrough the game a couple of times to make sure everything is working, and thus I do not feel comfortable releasing it yet.  Sorry about this.

I'll do my very best to release a beta tomorrow, which will have everything in it I was planning for zContest.  However, since I had to go into ROM to get this done, I'll add more stuff to Midnight after zContest.

Thanks, everyone!
Title: Re: Midnight
Post by: DJ Omnimaga on November 29, 2011, 11:30:30 pm
Yeah TI BASIC is just too big for RAM in general. Notice how all RPGs I made past Illusiat 6 had to be split into chapters. One idea I have if you use lists and stuff that can be archived is to store as much of the game as possible in such format so you can bypass the inability to archive/unarchive programs from other programs.

Anyway sorry to hear about the memory issues. I hope it doesn't prevent an eventual release althogether. Good luck!
Title: Re: Midnight
Post by: TIfanx1999 on November 30, 2011, 03:53:18 am
So you're going to use XCOPY and you plan to include even more content after zContest concludes? No need to apologize, this is good news! Keep up the great work Z! ;D

zContest Beta Release

I'm also putting up a mirror and a screenie here.

Thank you guys for your support of this project.  As stated above, I'm going to continue this until I deem it as good as it can get.  Please let me know of anything you see in this that irks you or gives you trouble.

Lol, Deep.  Maybe I should start the player off with less than full health so he/she thinks to use the bed quicker.
